What makes this card so amazing is that everyone always overlooks the obvious lack of a keyword in the ability.. its not -combat- damage. This means anything that makes the creature do damage, electropotence, soul's fire, etc, will destroy a land every turn. If you mana ramp this guy out on turn 3 or 4 and start destroying lands your opponent is never going to recover. Later in the game he's still a 6/6 with trample for only 5 mana in red and green, both colors that have great mana acceleration.

Oh, I'm sorry, did my Maelstrom Pulse just smash your Demis in the face? Again, so sorry. Oh, and if any more are played I have 3 more Maelstrom Pulses in my deck (and that's if I don't draw a Thought Hemy first).

Donovan, the ability only works when it does 6 or more damage.
I want to say this card is garbage since the ability is never going off, but it's still a 6/6 trampler for 5 and that counts for something i guess.

Sry I am new to magic, does the ability activate only when you attack the player or if it is blocked by a creature as well? If so does the creature have to have 6 toughness for the ability to activate? Also, the dual mana symbol means any combo of 5 red or green mana?? Thanks.
Man When Your Attacks Start Destroying Lands Thats Pretty BadAss, Not To Original But I Use Him With BoarTusk Liege & Help Ramp Him With Radha, Heir To Keld & Magus Of The VineYard.

lets see. some boosting, a coupel of blanch wood arnors, maybe more green or red dieties, 4 of these, some ramping and you have a solid casual deck.

@Herodotus: It has to deal 6 damage to a player. So if they don't block or if it has a Mage Slayer or if it's big enough (Via Giant Growth or similar) to do 6 after they block, it'll get to eat a land.

Good argument. Everything dies to some form of removal, so by your logic, it makes no sense but to play anything BUT removal.
Anyway, I will go out on a limb here and say that this is far superior to Spiritmonger -- everyone's favorite 6/6 for five. This has evasion and a disruptive ability, which are both far more benefical than monger's load of misleading and ineffective ones.

This card is a real fine piece of meat. a 6/6 body? check with trample? double ckeck blows up land when he isn't blocked? you bet
Certainly this ruinous behemoth costs 7, MAYBE 6 mana. Whats that you say? HE ONLY COSTS 5?! AND he can be played in either mono red or green? Ridiculous.

Whenever Deus of Calamity deals 6 or more damage to an opponent, proceed to win more.
Still, a fun "kick'em while their down" effect. Could have been better, though. He is lacking in synergy with his own aura, unlike the other Avatars. Sure double strike is always nice, but the green side is redundant.
I'd like to have seen him with "You may have ~ assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked." instead of the land destruction and with haste over trample. A super Ball Lightning (which has a green counterpart) that sticks around. Then his Aura would supply the trample (should you want to kill while dealing damage) and (Ouch!) double strike. With it, he'd be a 8/8 hasting double striker that is effectively unblockable.

Seriously too slow for green? At 5 mana?
Have you ever heard of green mana ramp? I play this turn 3 regularly
@WarioMan: No: The Deus's ability only works once for each instance of "6 or more" damage dealt to your opponent. However, if you give it double strike (Runes of the Deus) it can destroy two lands on a single attack because it deals two instances of "6 or more" damage to your opponent when it hits.

If I deal 12 damage with one Deus at one time, can I destroy two lands? The rulings say "increments of 6" so I was just wondering.
EDIT: Okay, thanks... not sure what the low rating was for though. I've since seen it run in a scary deck that ran Mage Slayer and Runes on this. I love it.

I love this card. A 6/6 Trampler for five CMC is enough for me, but then they tag on his ability. It can really get batshit crazy if you give him Runes of the Deus, Mage Slayer, or both. This is but a mere testament to how good the Lorwyn/Shadomoor Spirit Avatars and their respective Auras were... except for Nobilis of War, by comparison. His aura, Scourge of the Nobilis, was pretty good though.

I think this card's amazing, double strike and any power boosting effect just causes win. I think it could be combined with Vigor for some serious damage.

Did anathame really just say {G}{G}{G}{G}{G} is too expensive for green? You mean the same green that can generate 4 mana turn three with only the most common elves ever? And the same green that can easily have 6 mana turn three?
So hang on. If it has double strike AND a Mage Slayer, it can potentially wipe out three lands a turn. That's kind of amusing

to all you people that want to give him mage slayer and double strike to get rid of 3 lands per turn, you might be forgetting that this combo also deals at least 18 damage (an almost certainly game winning amount) every time you swing.
great in any green/red/green-red deck. I love the way the shadowmoor deities represent the spirit of their colours so well.
