Does anybody know why this is not a Human Minion?
Yeah, i can see that shadow, so this is possibly not his true form.
But on the other hand, Possessed creatures also have both types.

By the way, talking about her being awake or not - combining her with Sigil of Sleep is coincidentally in fact a decent combo, given that your opponent has other creatures outside.

It was meant to work in a white/black deck with Pacifism--both Urza's saga. I remember the drafts of these two and going to town on people in 2 turns.

People forget how, back in the day with Magic, black cards always had some sort of trade off that would ultimately give you the advantage in the end (if you didn't wind up killing yourself before then).

Well, I guess it's one way to ensure Radiant Essence gets the +1/+2 bonus and becomes a 3/5 for 3 CMC...

there should be a special version of this card showing that one sleeper from the Time Streams book.

@IRegretNothing: This is a picture of Xantcha. I don't recall why they decided not to make her legendary, but this is a card representing her.

@Mode- This is a Phyrexian. Specifically depicted in this art is Xantcha.

"This is a weird card."
"I disagree."
"Check the official rulings."
...
"Yep. It's officially weird."

Guess what has exactly ~four~ points of toughness? :) Wall Of Souls, Wall Of Essence, Souls Of The Faultless.. By the way, Endless Whispers always has this creature return to play under your control to donate it again and again, just in case your opponent destroys it! :)

For B, every turn, they get 2 damage to the face and, assuming they swing with it every turn (and they will, if they want it dead) you get three damage on the field, which you can soak up any number of ways. This is really not bad.

I realize that the one time I've actually seen this card played I had just eliminated all but 2 players in a 5 player chaos game and the guy probably actually normally would get the agent out with a spirit link or something. But I gotta share this.

I got given this card and the next turn I played and equipped it with a Loxodon Warhamemr and began brutalizing everyone :P. It was a fun game all round.

@Kryptnyt - I get that the art is Xantcha, but surely the card isn't representative of her? I'm almost finished reading Planeswalker at the moment, and at no point was Xantcha ever really a sleeper agent as the Phyrexians meant them to be. My guess is they had the art for Xantcha done, and decided against making her a card and just stuck it on the card they'd made to be the true sleepers.

Within mono-black, I find that this, Pestilence, and Cemetery Gate can combo. Maybe not THE most worthwhile strategy ever, but you can use the gates to block it, pestilence to add some damage per turn, and if things get out of hand with other creatures your opponent has, pestilence can wipe them all. *shrug*

Phyrexian sleeper agents weren't possessed humans, they were Phyrexian creatures carefully bred and groomed to be indistinguishable from the peoples they would infiltrate. So, though it looks human, it is in no way a human.

I see this card as a legacy on the theme that Curse Artifact and Cursed Land began. In fact, in Urza's Saga there was another card on the theme - Parasitic Bond. This card is possible the best of the group, though, because of its great casting cost and flexibility. Although as @Arachobia pointed out it can be a bit of a gamble.

A pretty good way to trigger creature "opponent has creatures" requirements, like those on Oath of Druids and Defense of the Heart.

Sigil of sleep doesn't work with this.
If your opponent is smart, he'll return the sleeper agent to your hand, (owner, not controller) at which point the Sigil disappears. And you have just wasted two mana.

Conversely, you could turn this into an aggro card by putting down a Torpor Orb first

This is beautiful. Perfect for black. Reasonably costed too.

Gonna run this with Curse of the Pierced Heart. Also probably will throw in Sulfuric Vortex.

Don't have to do anything else but removal.

Incidentally, I was making up magic cards for fun a couple weeks ago and made a BR version. Didn't know this card existed then. Well played, wizards. Well played.

Dark Ritual into Duress, this creature, and Paralyze. Sit back and laugh intil the opponent kills you with their full grip.
