IF only it was on your own upkeep. Then it would trigger blood thirst.

This is a mean fire-and-forget for red - it's going to seem so benign compared to the other things happening in this block.

This harkens all the way back to alpha. Compare it to copper tablet. this gives burn the inevitability they need against control decks.

To date, there have been exactly three Magic cards with the word "pierce" in the name: one in each of the latestthreeblocks.

Think... three turns later, you've done a Bolt's worth of damage. Not sure if this makes it good, but interesting at the very least.

perhaps i'm wrong, but i feel like making this R wouldn't have been overpowered. it still would take 3 turns to deal 3 damage, it would be sorcery-speed, and it couldn't target creatures. and the other player would have all those turns to figure out a way to remove it. as it is, i fear it won't see much play.

Its not that great. It's only use in my opinion is to annoy your opponent enough to waste a removal spell.

Not too bad in limited, if you get it out turn 2. Puts your opponent on a clock. At least in the pre-release, no one ever managed to get rid of it - not that it ever managed to kill anyone either.
Multiple instances can become yucky quickly, though.

This card won me four games in the prerelease by closing gap between early unanswered damage and that last burn spell.

This does technically activate bloodthirst, you just need a way to get your bloodthirsty creatures into play on your opponents turn. I like to use Scepter of Empires with Quicksilver Amulet to get a 9/9 trampling Carnage Wurm for 4 colorless mana. Also use with Lord of Lineage and Bloodlord of Vaasgoth to pump out a 7/7 flyer on their turn!
EDIT: Bloodlord only works when casting Vamps, so you can't make a 7/7 with Lord of Lineage. Whoops!

Words fail to describe how much I despise this card. A third of the games at the launch draft at my school involved this bloody curse. Three of those games included a Stromkirk Noble. Needless to say, those games ended swiftly.

Consider this red's Invisible Stalker for the set. It just can't be pumped up. I built a blue-red permission burn deck with this as the win condition. Totally unfun.

this seems great, I mean think about it, red runs outa ammo alot doesnt it? with this on the field, no matter WHAT you're doing, you're getting closer and closer to your goal, at the ABSOLUTE worst, they're on a twenty turn clock. (and Im sorry, but if THAT is the case, what were you THINKING running red?!) as long as they arent doing something life gain, this essentially spells doom if they dont work faster than you do. red is THE fastest if Im not mistaken, this should absolutely seal your opponent's fate, or make them waste a card to get rid of it.
still... wish it were your own upkeep... bloodthirst would have been nice... ah well.

Good if you're not playing aggressively. If you manage to cast this early, it's really going to be worth the investment later. Aggro decks tend to have better choices though, and this is simply just too slow for a good burn deck.

It's a turn two burn that pays for itself after resolving twice which shuts down early life gain and gives your opponent something else to worry about.

You can't think strictly of what red usually does. This card does not fit the general "red spell to the face mantra"
This is slow, but can deal a grave amount of damage in the course of the game. What it does is give red in Innistrad some reach for long games. This is the kind of thing you build into a black/red/green ramp build. Or build into a R/B control build.
For many games this becomes unstoppable damage. Wen you start racking 8 points of damage of a spell you only invested 2 mana in it's always going to be a great card.

Very nifty tool in red decks thinking about the long game. Annoying for Liliana of the Veil and other smal planeswalkers. But it's no Shrine of Burning Rage.

An interesting variation on the typical Red burn spell — an inexpensive {1}{R} enchantment that burns your opponent for 1 damage each turn. The cheap price and persistant effect makes it tempting to put into a Red burn deck, but it still seems just a little too slow and clunky for my taste. Definitely worth consideration, though.

Just think. After 5 turns its dealt a lava axe worth of damage for . Hardy little investment, multiples are not redundant. Only "downside" is pulling it later on when you need a direct target nuke.

Why not play it with a life gain or control deck as your win condition? I don't feel like aggro decks synergize as well with this as everyone is saying. It's almost as inevitable a win as Jin-Gitaxias, and much cheaper.

I love cards like this. In a mono-red deck the big decisions are always between burning off the more dangerous creatures or taking chunks out of your opponent's life, a card like this allows a mono-red player to be more defensive than most people are used to and save some spells for a big finish.

This card is awesome. Not powerful enough for rare, but it's unique enough and flavorful enough to be a rare, I think. It's very...iconic, I guess. Add a damage for each past one.
1: One damage 2: Two normal, additional one. 3: Three normal, additional two. 4: Four normal, additional three.
I run a Tibalt deck with four copies of this. The deck is basically all the choice spells Browbeat, Blazing Salvo. This keeps the pressure on. Keeps the game on a clock.
Also, it can target Planeswalkers! Beautifully elegant.
Edit: Mostly just clarity. Also, what it needed to be a rare.

Imagine this card with a card like Furnace of Rath. 2 Damage each turn, and with every extra one of these tacked on it just kills the opponent.
