I love the fact that it comes back as a Ball Lightning. Interesting use of the persist mechanic!

Very interesting card. Well designed.

This card is really fantastic, it has all the power of a ball lightning, can come back once, and gains trample when it does. One could easily see how smacking a giant growth on it or a colossal might would be pretty devastating. It combos nicely with cards like where ancients tread too, comes into play does immediate 5, attacks for 7, and if it dies it does another 5 when it renters play and leaves you with a 6/1. It can also combo with mayael's aria, quillspike, or fate transfer, allowing you to cancel out or move its negative counters to other creatures so it can persist indefinitley. Horde of notions will play it from the graveyard. That's about as much as you can ask for at only 5 cmc.

If you swing with this and Ferropede do you get to trample and persist at the same time?

That's 5 mana for 13 damage. Which is fantastic. It'll probably end up wrecking a creature on the first run, because no one wants to take 7 damage to the face. On the second run, it might take out a second creature, and almost certainly deal some trample damage. That's what we in the biz call card advantage.

Also, the art is wicked. 4.5/5.

Next turn, after summoning it the turn before... Fling it, perhaps after playing a land and Pandemonium? Then... attack.

@kryptnyt: On second thought, that WOULD work - if you gave them first strike.

Also? This guy's awesome.

@exodus: Actually, a blunderbuss is a type of gun.

Lol play on words of "blunderbuss". If you don't what that means, it's like a baton. Though how this card and baton's are related is anyone's guess...

EDIT

thank you littlebeast, I made a small error there. A blunderbuss is, in fact, a gun. My mistake.

Favorite variance of Ball lightning yet. His artwork kind of implies flying though...

Preferably more then 1 fling for when he comes back with persist.

Wonderfully designed, very original, a casual masterpiece and a fun EDH/Commander trick! Epic art! 4.5

My opponent plays this, attacks, I chump it, my turn play Mimic Vat and Lightning Bolt this guy. He puts scoop on the stack. This is a very fun card, nothing is more fun than stealing persist creatures with Mimic Vat.

Elemental tribal bro-hood = Incandescent Soulstoke. Two mana to hit for 8, then he persists back as a 7/2....then, if you are so tempted, follow it up with a Nova Chaser for 11, sac and return this back as a 9/3...

@nammertime
No, turn you play it (if you have the mana), fling it either at the face or the biggest blocker. Then it comes back, all hasty for the swing. If you hit the biggest blocker, that's more trampling over when the block with the smaller one. If they had no blocker, that's 13 damage for 7 mana in one turn.

Or 14 if you swing first then fling. Then you have 6 power for the next turn to swing in. 14 plus 6 equals...

I like it. It improves on Ball Lightning's original Design, by making it a lot higher CMC, meaning it's not quite so terrifying to race (2 turns is a lot in Red), but with the added benefit of dealing roughly double damage, which is to say that Timmy cards are more fun than Spike cards USUALLY.

Inferno Titan might be a little better, but when you are thinking of making a Red 'mana=damage' deck, and going for elemental creatures that sacrifice themselves and stuff to cram as much fire-and-lightning based artwork as possible, Thunderblust still very nice.

If you have Premium Deck Series: Fire & Lightning, I would suggest substituting Hammer of Bogardan with this as they have close CMC's and similar 'return' effects.

Probably the strangest card I've seen in a while. A big, hasty creature without trample, but recurs as a Ball Lightning.
I can get behind that.

I'll be damned if this isn't one of the coolest artworks for Magic cards I've ever seen.

My friend uses this with the card "where ancients tread".. No ones mentioned this combo at all... He deals you 5 at least from the enchant, plus 7 if you dont block, 10 if you do block cus hes very likely to reenter the battlefield.

This deserves more credit. Unlike Ball Lightning, instead of going away after one shot, it keeps going, and it even comes back.
