This + Thatcher Revolt makes me cry

Seriously, at the prerelease someone had a pair of these and some Thatcher revolts. Nothing is more annoying than losing 16 life turn 5.

Top 5 limited card in the set - absolute powerhouse. You wont understand until you've either mauled someone with it, or had them evaporate you on turn 5 with a Thatcher's Revolt. This card is powerful from the moment you drop it.

A magnet for removal. Everyone at the prerelease had one, and everyone was terrified that someone else might play it. Makes Voice of the Provinces slightly less terrible too.

I dunno...great in token decks, or weenie decks with lots of hand replenishing, but still seems like one of those cards that just doesn't quite make the cut. For 4 CMC, I can think of better. But it's certainly worth trying out to see if I'm dead wrong (which I probably am!).

EDIT: Okay, had one of these at prerelease, and it's official: I was dead wrong. Even a single trigger per turn is fantastic as long as you have a handful of creatures out. Playing anything that generates multiple creatures per turn makes this very, very powerful for an uncommon. Top notch limited card, and probably decent for constructed. I'll have to experiment with this some more, but it's much more promising than I originally gave it credit for.

This was awesome at the pre-release. Works nicely with Cloudshift. But i'm guessing this just isn't very strong outside of a sealed format. In a token deck that can abuse the trigger it could have a strong effect. Casual tken decks most likely because I'm sure there are better 4CMC cards that can go into a token deck in standard... like Sorin. Yeah I'd probably go with Sorin. Not gonna lie though. I'm putting a couple of these into my casual B/W token deck it totally owned face at the pre-release.

With this on the field, Thatcher Revolt gives you 3 4/4 dudes plus makes this a 5/5. That's 17 points of damage from a cheap two-card combo that's easy to assemble in draft!

I've got the Fiery Dawn precon deck. Turn 3: Riot Ringleader, Turn 4: Goldnight Commander, Turn 5: Commander's Authority. Turn 6: upkeep - 1/1 human from Com.Auth. and creatures are +1/+1, cast Thatcher Revolt and gain +3/+3, cast Kessig Malcontents, thats 7 humans in play for 7 damage to opponent, and another +1/+1 to all, so now I attack with Riot Ringleader, another +1/+0 to all humans, Ringleader is 8/7, Goldnight Commander is 8/7, token red humans are 6/5 each, 5 attackers on turn 6 for 34 damage. My opponent, playing the Angelic Might precon, who started the turn at 20, is at 13 life after I cast Malcontents, and blocks 2 largest attackers with a Serra Angel and Angelic Wall, takes 18 damage form Thatchers and the loss.

In a best of 3, Fiery Dawn beat Angelic Might 2-1.

This with Cathars' Crusade makes for a lot of weenie pain.

Why is no one mentioning how well this card combos with a Descendants path? Or maybe 2? I've had that, it got evil. Throw Commander's Authority on something and you have an army of 4/4s each turn.

I have only one minor complaint to land about this card- This guy's hat does not do himself any justice. Other than that, this is a great card to keep in a soldier or human based deck, or practically any deck that relies on swarming creatures to overpower an opponent.

My favourite deck right now is based around this , Thatcher Revolt, and Dual Casting. Getting attacked by three 4/4s by turn 5 might be annoying but try getting hit by six 7/7 in turn 6. Of course, if you had a Champion of the Parish out or two before the Goldnight Commander, they'r at least going to be 3/3 and 2/2 each before you play the doubled Thatcher Revolt which gives them six +1/+1 counters on top of the +6/+6 from the commander. There are so many cute tricks you can do with this even if your deck is completely just Avacyn Restored.

Krenko, Mob Boss goes really well with this.

This card is actually surprisingly strong - in the right deck of course.
I run a white weenie deck, and lost count of how many times this card has won me games long ago.
I goes fantasticly with Shrine of loyal legions, Hero of bladehold, midnight hauting (for some combat shenanigans) and lingering souls

4/5 for great combo potential in the right deck.

Put this in my white-weenie deck...

This + Hero of Bladehold

I run this over cathar's crusade in my BW token deck, mainly for the additional synergy with midnight haunting. Totally worth it to see the look on your opponents face when you kill their fatty with a double chump block. :D

Fun EDH combo: Goldnight Commander + Mycoloth + Doubling Season

P1: "Okay, so how many tokens is that?"
P2: "20"
P1: "...and all of your creatures - "
P2: "Get +20/+20 until end of turn, yes."
P1: "...damn."
P2: "I know, right?"

Add in Gavony Township for extra satisfaction.

Budget friendly shenanigans: Anger in the graveyard, Goldnight Commander in play, and Thopter Assembly. The upkeep following Thopter Assembly entering the battlefield: attack with five 6/6 flying thopters, and a 7/7 Goldnight Commander (plus you can recast the orignal Thopter Assmebly for even more damage).

@Due

I prefer:

Turn 1: Forest - Avacyn's Pilgrim
Turn 2: Forest - Champion of Lambholdt
Turn 3: Mountain - Goldnight Commander
Turn 4: Thatcher Revolt

Same 29 damage on turn 4, but all unblockable by creatures with less than 8 power (which at this point should be everything except your Champion). Can also add a land and play a Gather the Townsfolk after the Thatcher to bump it up to 37 damage unblockable by creatures with less than 12 power.
