An 8/8 creature for 6 mana is good, but as Terra Stomper shows, acceptable in the current state of Magic. An 8/8 creature that can hit a well-defended opponent by going after a badly-defended player? That's a very good creature for 6 mana.

The only problem with this card is that when it hits the field everyone will scramble to help each other to avoid damage leaving you with less chaos and more people against you. Other than that slap a Vow of Wildness on this guy and watch everyone glare at the person that uses only small creatures.

Seriously, an 8/8? A 6/6 would have been fine.... anyhoos, slap on an Assault Strobe or Basilisk Collar for added whack.

They have realized that they can put about any effect, power, and toughness on a green creature and cost doesn't matter at all as long as it doesn't have shroud, etc.

I can now finally run a solid BlueGreen unblockable fattie deck when playing as the Archenemy. It just wasn't coming together before, but this card really brings it home. Besides, it doesn't matter if it makes people want to kill you - if your'e the archenemy, everyone is already trying to do that anyway.

I really like how this card changes in threat level depending on what game type you're playing. Worse than Terra Stomper for duels, very aggressive for 2HG, and absurd in FFA. Just make sure you have a good strategy before you drop this guy in FFA, without haste it gives your opponents alot of time to dislike you for having him in play. Reminds me alot of Lightning Reaver but on steroids. Synergy with Keen Sense or Snake Umbra, Canopy Cover, Sigil of Sleep, Elder Mastery, Grafted Exoskeleton, any kind of lifelink like Loxodon Warhammer, Petrified Wood-Kin, Any doublestrike like Fireshrieker...
I'm glad wizards' is making interesting and playable hydras.

I love the flavor text.

This card needs trample, though I suppose they didn't give it trample for a reason.

Trample would have made this guy broken, but who plays green and doesn't run Rancor?

No discrimination! That's what I'm talking about! I will always be happy being attacked by this guy. I would clearly know the intentions of its controller; and the intentions of its controller are very clear.

"Why, anyone who attacks you with any ol' 8/8 has clear intentions" you say.
Really?
Are you completely sure about that?

Well, let me ask you this: Can another person's intentions be clear if that person him/herself doesn't even know what his/her own intentions are?
Or, in other words:
"Why are you attacking me for 8?"
"Because your blockers can't kill my dude."
"Well, I'm down to 2, that other player with 14 flying power on the board is still at 20, and his 'blockers' don't look like they are going to randomly expire anytime soon. So what's going down a couple of turns from now?"
"Oh, well I don't know..."

Unlike the above skit, attacking an open player with this Hydra Omnivore is a friendly affirmation that Magic is a bad substitute for Dungeons and Dragons (and an even worse substitute for World of Darkness) and that- without the involvement of any of like 8 certain cards- all players, except for ONE, have to lose in order for the game to end (properly). (conceding because you failed a will save against boredom makes for a sad ending)

Very nice in Archenemy, obviously. But even nicer in Emperor, especially if the poor fool you're stuck with can't do a thing about the damage.

@Totema: This card is not better in Emperor than in Archenemy. In Archenemy, you damage one player and are able to damage all 3. In Emperor, you damage one player and only damage the other opponents that are within your range of influence (see rule 801.10; it's long enough that I don't wish to post it here). Assuming an emperor game of 3v3, if you're a general, who has a range of influence of 1, the opposing team's emperor and other general are not within your range of influence, so the trigger doesn't do anything to them; if you are an emperor, who has a range of influence of 2, then dealing damage to that same opposing player will only damage the team's emperor as that is the only other opponent within your range of influence. So in Archenemy this can deal damage to 3 opponents, and in Emperor it can maybe damage 2. So it's not better in Emperor.

Such a fun card. I very much enjoy cards like this, Blood Tyrant, and Withengar Unbound that are designed for multiplayer.

It took my land and my home,
Kept the fires burning
I brimmed with resolve,
but my insides were churning
I do my best to drown out the dread

But there were too many heads
Its massive body blazed a swath of destruction
They tore us to shreds
It showed us fury like a fiery eruption
Like a ravenous animal, it scattered our dead
On the rooftops, bloodied and red
The beast had too many heads
It's a predator, and we were its prey
Its massacre spreads
My friends and family were running away
But I stood up to the monster and defended our stead
In territory no one dared to tread
