The only pratical application I can see for this is using it on yourself...

I must admit, this artwork creeps me out, so good on Shelly Wan for that. The card itself is mediocre compared to the choosy one-drop discard effects we know and love, so I wouldn't use it unless I was cobbling together a junky madness or dredge deck.

I like this. Seems useful in Reanimator.

Useful in extended against the Harbingers from Lorwyn

This is being sorely underrated. There are many great applications for this card especially with Blood chief's Ascension.

The art is absolutely gorgeous and disturbing.

As for the card itself, meh. I suppose it could be worse.

This card should have been uncommon and instant.

infemox10, that happened to me as well. It also helped my Bonehoard.

What?

This is an elegant piece of tempo destruction. It's one mana and one card to get rid of two. You don't get to pick sure, but you can run this along with Duress, it doesn't have to replace it.

A devastating reply to Preordain.

I don't see why this card is rated so low! For Black Discard, this is one of the most powerful early-hitters since Raven's Crime! Mire's Toll being the exception.

One Phyrexian mark later, all she sees is the glorious future where abhorrent Phyrexian critters run over the entire world. Everything and everyone she once knows of (plus herself) will be completely altered and made into yet another of the abhorrent Phyrexian pawns, and ready to be unleashed as Phyrexia takes its revenge upon the multiverse under the lead of the new Father of Machines.

@ Hayw00d0909; Exactly what I use this card for ;)
Turn one swamp this discard say Pathrazer of Ulamog
Turn two Swamp Reanimate
Turn three swing and sweep their board
Turn four ???????
Turn five win + profit =)

I agree with PhyrexianAdvocate on this one. In my {BR} vampire control deck I use this to slow down their hand by an extra card and possibly get a nice target in the graveyard for Rise from the Grave. It was spectacular when on turn 6 I stole a Pelakka Wurm they discarded on turn 1.

It may not be Duress, Inquisition of Kozilek, or even Blackmail. But it's a card for a card and it punishes people who use Halimar Depths. It has its applications, trust me. You'll laugh when you score the good card they scried to the top of their library with Augury Owl.

I fail to see why this is a bad card. It works excellently as an cheap discard alongside Lilliana's Caress. I run 4 in my discard deck and it works great.

Perhaps the people who are hating on it play a lot of limited, in which it blows. Otherwise though you guys have come up with some cool applications for it.

It's a common B sorcery. What did you expect, a functional reprint of Inquisition of Kozilek? This is the lowest discard can go, and to make matters worse, gets in the way when I try to search for real mill cards. The only way this will see play, is if someone can make a painful quandary deck before zen rotates out.

isn't so bad. You guys are thinking too 1 dimensional. You could Use this on some one using Scrying in their deck and hurt that strategy. Or hurt some one who likes to put cards on top of their Library. Or you could combo this with some other cards in the set that put other player's cards on top of their library.
Why does every card need to either be a Super powered, MUST BE BETTER THEN THE LAST CARD LIKE IT or it sucks? I like this card better then a lot of other 1 mana discard cards and I'm thinking I will use it!

Ya I don't understand why this is rated so low, one mana too force your opponent to discard and possibly get rid of some valuable land off the top of their library you can't really go wrong...

I use this in my Crypt of Agadeem/Exsanguinate MBC deck on myself. I regularly take an average of 40 life from someone in one turn. My friends refuse to play multiplayer with me if I use that deck.

This is a very underestimated card. Why? Liliana's Caress ran with Duress, Mind Rot, Dispise & Psychic Miasma.

Turn one you can use either Duress (remove spell: counter spell) or Horrifying Revelation (to get card advantage).Turn two, Liliana's Caress and mill/discard & control for the rest of the game. Another under-rated card if used well.

I'd probably run Gitaxian Probe to get the draw & keep tabs along with Liliana Vess for good measure.

In late game when your opponent is top-decking (which is common in my discard focused MBC that makes heavy use of Black Sun's Zenith as well) this card is less vulnerable to the card-type limitations that Duress, Despise,Thoughtseize, and Inquisition of Kozilek (all of which are AWESOME cards btw) have.

OK, so you can't choose which card they have to ditch--not as big a deal when they don't have too many, right? I use this in my casual MBC where their hand has already been abused by other discard spells, specters, and board wipes.

why is this rated so low? 1B and you get to discard two, yeah you cant choose but i mean your opponent wouldnt put those cards in his deck just for nothing right?

IN SUMMARY
Cannot see hand
They choose the Card
1 card is irreverent, equal chance of hurting or helping them. (If you could see there topdeck or if they cast ponder, then it would be a relevant ability.)
Wheres the card advantage? (Your spending mana & loosing a card in your hand so they can choose to ditch there weakest link.)

Compare to all the other Black discard spells. This is one of the weakest ones by far. Not everyone plays blue, but I must admit its a very strong response to Ponder, or anything else that involves top deck management. In standard I would main deck Despise and put this in my sideboard for control decks. Its just to weak of a spell against every other deck.

This card might not let you scout out ahead, but at the same time, if they have anything in their hand, something will be going to the graveyard, unlike a lot of other Black Sorcery speed discards that have the potential to just fizzle out. Hell, this one hits two cards, and can brutalize people relying on the top of their deck. It's like the absolute bane of Magus of the Future.

Mediocre; but it hoses tutors/harbingers, is card neutral, and that's about it lol.
Still, it works against tutoring combos so it may have a place somewhere.

This card combos with Vile Rebirth pretty good in casual play.

I think the real argument here is this, if you had the choice between this and Duress you would choose Duress. You wouldn't need to use this as well as, as that would be eight one mana single card discard spells. You *might* split 2/2 but I think that would just put you in situations were you would just prefer the one you didn't have at the time.

If you manage to get quite lucky (luck happens more in Casual games, where people's decks are sometimes less cutthroat and there is more room for every player to have bad luck, which is the same as their opponent having good luck), well....this DOES get TWO cards instead of one.

It's a very bad Hymn to Tourach, almost.

No, you should never try to use it as Hymn to Tourach even at FNM. A game more Casual than FNM, though? Yeah, it MIGHT just work out better than it has a right to. :)

Open your minds a little folks. Every card has a home. Quit comparing this to Duress. It serves a totally different purpose. First of all this is good in reanimator. Being able to discard your 8 drop then mill a card for a chance at another fatty hitting the bin is premium. Second of all, it always hits, which is what some decks need (*Cough* Dedicated discard, Liliana's Caress) in decks like that, Duress and Thoughtseize suck because they have a high chance of missing. Mill one is just gravy. People overlook it. If they are running two win conditions and I happen to mill one of them, their chances of now drawing it have been cut in half. Take them horse blinders off.
Beautiful artwork!!! 5/5 to help put this where it belongs (4/5)
