Might be playable in draft or limited but four mana is just bad for constructed, especially when it's just a vanilla power boost. Could have been interesting if it had an alternative equip condition (like Ronin Warclub or the tribal cycle eg Obsidian Battle-axe).

This card is crap. It's too over-costed in mana cost and equip cost. Uhg...

I think trample might have been nice...

Yeah cause I'd rather pay an additional mana to equip this instead of Loxodon Warhammer for +1 toughness over Lifelink and Trample. Awful card.

Such an awesome name and artwork, wasted :(

Maybe this is just me, but i can't remember a time where Vulshok Battlegear was part of the metagame.
Well, apparently it was, and therefore Wizards had to give us this strictly worse version as replacement.

If you have nothing better in limited, you could use this. otherwise, stay away.

Revised flavour text. This tool has but one purpose,...spreading ketchup.

I wonder if it really is as bad as it looks...

Considering the amount of cards with trample/shroud/landwalk there are this card isn't COMPLETELY useless, but it's still crap. 2/5

I think this card is a trap for new players. The plus 3 boost is very tempting, but sinking seven mana into this card for such a trivial effect is a complete waste. I regret to admit that I fell for its appeal at my prerelease, and it ended up costing me a game in which my equipped creature was excomunicated. Ouch!

@IRHennessy : shroud? A shroud creature can't be equipped... You're thinking of troll shroud

This in the same set as Sword of Vengeance . What?

He's probably talking about killing a shrouded creature in combat that this would come in handy

As for the card, trusty machete is so much better for one less power, it costs two less to both play and equip

I often wonder about the rationale behind printing cards that no one in their right mind would ever use even in casual play. Thankfully, Wizards seem to be doing this less now, but you still get cards like this. As far as I know, the only cards like this in this core set are: Warlord's Axe, Armored Cancrix, Silvercoat Lion, Tireless Missionaries, Maritime Guard, Bog Raiders, Nether Horror, Rotting Legion, Berserkers of Blood Ridge, Canyon Minotaur, Dryad's Favor, and Runeclaw Bear. That's being fairly generous to a lot of underpowered cards and almost-vanilla creatures like Giant Spider, but still, 12 awful cards out of the entire set isn't bad compared to what's come before.

A terrible card, but can be useful in limited against someone whose blinding mages are locking you down and you have limited opportunity to do damage. plus, putting this on an augury owl is flavor explosion.

but yeah, the only equipment card i know if that is worse is Razor Boomerang.

@hennesey
no this card is bad even on unblockable creatures or first strikers.

hmm, 7 mana for +3/+1? that sounds reasonable to you? and paying 4 to put it on the next thing?

really? oh and also, dont forget this is trusty machete with an extra +1/+0.... for 2 more CMC and double the equip cost.

This card is way overcosted. Bonesplitter gives you +2/+0 for 1 to cast and 1 to equip while this cost 5 more mana for a mere +1/+1 more.

I'll put this on my SB at my Rod of Ruin or my Razor Boomerang deck. I can't make a space to put it anywhere I'll use it as toilet paper... At least it won't be a waste... Tnx wizards for giving us more toilet paper!

I agree with the general consensus on this card in Constructed, but Limited players, don't be fooled. This card is quite decent in Drafts and Sealed, and it can turn your 1/1 dorks into real, bonafide threats.

I love how people completely ignore that limited is one of the most played formats. This card is *great* in limited, and is almost an auto-include. Yes, it's expensive - but it turns your Grizzly Bears (and there are a LOT of bears in the format) into 5/3s. That is NOT bad, and being able to turn a 2 drop into something that can take out the beefier commons and quite a few uncommons is pretty nice. Put it on an evasive creature, such as one of the formats many fliers, and you have a lot of pain going through. Give it to something with lifelink and you're getting a lot back.

Of course, Sword of Justice is better, but it's also rare. Whispersilk Cloak is better *on an already good creature*, but Warlord's Axe is better on vanilla/cheap creatures. Just try putting it on a Scroll Thief. What's that? You have to chump block a 4/4 or take 4 and let me draw a card? Nice.

However, in the constructed front everyone's spot on. It doesn't do nearly enough when you could just replace it with Sword of Vengeance from the very same set (or superior equipment from other sets, such as the very sexy Basilisk Collar).

"Core set is for beginner"... so, why put a decent "2" equip cost instead of this ridiculous "4"??... The beginner have to learn... They will learn with this card that a Core set is plenty of crap card like this, and they probably have to spend more money in Scars of Mirrodin...

@JaxsonBateman

The problem most people have with it is that it turns your Grizzly's into 5/3s... for 7 mana. Why pay that when you could buy two 3/3's or 1 PELAKKA WURM for that much(ignoring color)?

For how bad it is, I had a friend once who kept tossing it onto a White Knight. Caused a lot of problems for me on turn four, almost always had to chump the damned thing. And for that, I will always have respect for a card that at least does something, no matter how overcosted.
