Seems to have been tricky to use in TIme Spiral, because if you didn't have another spell for it to fuel it would hit you for 3. A Firebreathing ability like Char-Rumbler's would work.
Now that we don't have Mana burn anymore, I'm quite happy to abuse this on my elemental deck with Brighthearth Banneret, which makes it practically free, allowing me to do stuff like playing 3 of them followed by a Chandra's Spitfire on turn 3.

Priest of Urabrask is probably worse than this, as for 1 mana extra this gets +1/+2.

The cards are just different, getting this guy at mostly free, really changes the strategies over getting (this weaker guy) Priest of Urabrask for 'free'.

Whatever a spleenfruit is, I have an odd desire to try one...
@Capt13: If a card says "Add {MANA} to your mana pool," that mana only lasts until the next time your pool empties (probably at the end of the phase), unless it specifies otherwise (e.g. Sakiko, Mother of Summer). It is NOT like you get to search for three Mountains and put them into play.

Each Time Spiral card was an homage to at least one previously printed card.

Recently got a lot better when they took out mana-burn.

Coal Stoker is also good with Minion Reflector. Why yes, I'd love a better-than-free copy. Why not make that deck with Parallel Lives, Doubling Season, and/or Dual Nature just for really awkward mana-ramp?

This card is referencing Coal Golem.
