If someone tries to use this card without actually tearing it into pieces, he or she should automatically lose the game.

I'd never directly use this card, and instead try to put a token copy into play to use this one. That's much more bearable for most players' hearts. Yet still fair play, isn't it? ;)

The blacker lotus would have been the best card if the activated ability would'nt be like that, coz that's really a horrifying thing to do. ^_^

I would so love to watch 4 people play an unglued match, it would be hella funny. I'm sure someone somewhere out there has actually used blacker lotus exactly as the effect requires, just for the luls! I like to think so anyway

Great card to use if your playing for money or deck ownership, because its not expensive.

Clearly not as good as the original Black Lotus. Since you have to tear this card, and you don't have to tear the original Black Lotus from Alpha or Beta versions. Ofcourse for one time use this card is better especially when you have some ducktape! Considering the fact that black lotus is much more expensive then blacker lotus i'll go for Blacker Lotus in my deck, even knowing i have to tear it apart, it's much less heartbreaking to tear up this one for 4 mana than to buy a $ 500+ black lotus without tearing it apart for only 3 mana.

This card rocks. The de***ion doesn't tell you HOW to rip the card into pieces. By tearing off a tiny corner of the card, you have effectively torn it into "pieces" while keeping it usable for future games :) It's not up to your opponent to determine the definition of tearing into pieces. You've done what the card says, so by buying one of these you could effectively (without having to tape it anyway) use this card probably twenty or more times by just tearing off a small piece of the corner :)

I can't believe some people DON'T tear this card up to use it. If you don't it's a ***(hope that get's censored) better version of Black Lotus. I actually plan on buying like thirty of them, just to watch the look on someones face when I actually tear it up and replace it after the match.

What if you just tear it in half, tape it back together after the game, put it back in the sleeve, and each time you play just remove the tape to take the pieces apart again? They really should've specified a minimum number of pieces.

But if you're just playing with friends and you want to stay true to the spirit of this without making each other waste money for no reason, I'd suggest something like only being able to use it once every 5 games, or houseruling a drawback like losing 5 life.

★★★★☆ (4.4/5.0) (31 votes)
Gently brush the card's surface. You have removed at least a single molecule of the card. It is now in "pieces." Proceed as normal.

Also, the upcoming Blackest Lotus makes 5 mana of any colour, but to use it you have to light yourself on fire.

Must Read: Best Combo Ever

There is a HILAROUS combo that I heard of involving a guy that used the Mycosynth Lattice / March of the Machines combo. What he did was Mindslaver his opponent, turn all cards in play into copies of Blacker Lotus using Mirrorweave and activate all of his permanents!

I don't remember who created that combo, but that man is the best Johnny ever.

Combo Broken Down For Those Confused:
1. Mycosynth Lattice makes all permanents artifacts.
2. March of the Machines turns all non-creature artifacts into creatures. (Blacker Lotus is an artifact creature now)
3. Mindslaver opponents turn.
4. During that turn, Mirrorweave targeting your Blacker Lotus creature.
5. ???
6. Profit!

@dberry2: this card has a casting cost of zero, so march of the machines would instantly kill it

★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (6 votes)
Instead of using March of the Machines you could use Tezzeret the Seeker, or instead of Blacker Lotus you could use Chaos Confetti. Or throw in all four with Mater of Etherium for maximum redundancy. I thought of a deck like this, but with Shapesharer, Imagecrafter and red creature stealing spells like Act of Treason. And the win condition is simple, your opponent concedes when he realizes his Baneslayer Angel isn't worth a game of casual magic. They say you can concede at any time and even if tearing the card to pieces is a cost, I don't think conceding uses the stack.

Has anyone noticed the only cost is tapping it? Tearing it to pieces is part of the ability, so you could activate it an infinite # of times and get infinite mana out of it

Jealous friend: "Yeah well.. I have BLACKER LOTUS and I didn't even have to rip anyone off to get it."

@dberry02 - that is the coolest combo I've ever heard, the idea of ripping up every card on the opponents side of the battle field... well it's beautiful.

think you've forgotten blacker lotus costs 0 mana, so would die as soon as it became a 0/0 creature. fixable with something like Glorious Anthem though

Isn't there a rule that allows you to use up to the legal amount of proxies in a deck if you own the original card? I'd just keep a massive stack of proxies of this instead if that's the case :-p

Prototype portal and this... now you can tear up all the little paper TOKENS you use to represent this.
problem solved. Thank you prototype portal! best artifact ever.
ErnieZer0
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Tetsu_tora has a really good point. Just make a token copy of the card, this would save the actual card from being destroyed. Plus, the rules state that tokens can be made from ANYTHING! so get a really LARGE peice of paper, and then you can tear it more. So you can add 500 to your mana pool and cast EVERYTHING

One of the Un-cards that's a funny joke when you see it but completely terribly unfun to actually use. You lose your card, so you only get one shot of fun, unless you're just cheating. The only combo I've seen here with the joke part is threatening the destruction of other people's cards, which is ridiculously unfun. And when you're using a better version of the Power 9 in effects, you're probably going to do something massively degenerate and unfun.

The "tear" part is on the right of the colon which means it doesn't happen until resolution. So if you have a way to return it to hand in response to the tap (vedalken mastermind) you will get the mana and not have to tear it up.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@dberry02 That wouldn't work, actually. March of the Machines gives them power and toughness equal to their converted mana cost. In other words, Blacker Lotus would just die due to having 0 toughness. Adding in a card that gave your Blacker Lotus additional toughness as a creature would do it, however.

@dberry02 - you need at least one more card to give blacker lotus 0/+1 at least. Otherwise it just dies to March of the Machines.

@achilleselbow....you must be a Johnny. a particularly cruel and unusual one to be able to get around THIS drawback. For your appreciation and education, may I present:

Blackest Night Lotus: 0
Legendary Artifact- Doom Flower (Mythic Rare)
Tap, tear Blackest Night Lotus into 1000 pieces, then exile the pieces and light all pieces of any card with 'Lotus' in its name in exile on fire: Add five mana in any combination of colors to your mana pool and return all creatures from all graveyards into play under your control. Those creatures have deathtouch, persist, undying, unearth 0 and infect until end of turn and are black zombies in addition to their other creature types. At the beginning of the next end step, everyone loses The Game.

If a Johnny can manage to get around the tear drawback, the burn drawback, the Legendary drawback, AND the game loss drawback---AND prove that it was necessary to do so for profit---
then they will be crowned King of Combo. The Challenge starts....

Overpowered. The tear up isn't part of the cost of activating it's ability! Pretty sure you could think of quite a few combos abusing that!

@Achillesbow
You're completely missing the point of this card.
The "rip this up" clause is to encourage you not to play it, whereas anyone would put Black Lotus into any deck if they could (ignoring its price and looking at its playability only).
Think of it this way. You have a few copies of the best card in the game, right? But you have to rip them up to use them. You wouldn't do it.
You have a copy of Black lotus. Do you play it in your deck and risk your opponent deciding to shuffle for you, and doing it a little roughly? Of course you don't. "IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!"

Anyways, SICK Trinket Mage target. But it doesn't combo with Auriok Salvagers.

Addressing some of the physical "workarounds" for the cost. . .I would think some of those would violate the use of the word "tear" as the action of creating "pieces" of the card. Being of human size, brushing or rubbing a card is not "tearing", and neither is necessarily removing tape from the card.

Clashkill84
★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0) (1 vote)
@dberry02: The only problem with that combo is that Blacker Lotus would be a 0/0 and would die as soon as it entered play. But add in Tempered Steel and win.
Mooby
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
To those pointing out the tearing is part of the effect rather than the cost:

The ability is a mana ability, which does not use the stack. You can't intervene with something like a Claws of Gix to prevent tearing or use a Voltaic Key to get two activations.

Lordofthekithkins, that comment you made was completely and utterly racist, and offensive. I'm surprized they did'nt ban you from a wizards account. Also, whoever rated that well, thats also racist and how could a horrible thing like that be funny, things like that could bring back racism.

Prototype Portal. Cast traumatize and then unearth your goblin horde with this card led by Goblin Chieftain.

But actually the burn drawback might effect the lotus imprinted on the prototype portal, with the way its worded.

So yes there is no way to legally get around your drawbacks without destroying your own card.

Not quite.
Prototype Portal the Blackest Night Lotus. Activate Portal. Pull the original out of exile. Crack the token, use the five mana to Traumatize yourself, Unearth a bunch of hasty whatever you stuff your deck with, I recommend tramplers, Eldrazi or just straight unblockable. And if you've got a Leyline of Punishment around, it'll take a Festival to stop 10 poison.

Nice try, but clashkill84 is right.

@clashkill84
You're not as right as you think you are. If you do as dberry suggests and Mirrorweave all creatures into Blacker Lotuses then all of your opponent's creatures will become 0/0s and die (yours won't because you have your Tempered Steel) I'm sure there's ways of buffing your opponents creatures (maybe even with their own hand after your Mindslaver is activated) and you'll likely still win the game after all this happens, but who cares about winning when you have a chance to legally tear up your opponent's cards?
Arachnos
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
But where's the Blackest Lotus?

@dberry: Note that you also need to have something that boosts the toughness of all artifacts in play, including your opponent's (unless you don't care about ripping his lands to pieces). This is because otherwise, Blackest Lotus will immediately die upon becoming a creature (0 mana cost means 0/0 body), and so will all lands.
