The epitome of a newbie card. It's simple and it's easy to play. It's also bad, to encourage the player to get better cards when (s)he's ready to deal with more complex abilities, or in some cases non-matching power/toughness.
Also, the art is much worse than the art from 7th and 8th editions. Too bad they changed it back.

I think we can fix this. He's "eager" right? So let's just slap on First Strike and then you get this nice little cycle of one drops in each color that have an evergreen ability.

**Yes, Fugitive Wizard doesn't have an ability, but its bifrucated name fits the cycle, as does its cost and 1/1 -ness. And giving him Shroud fits his flavor.

I must admit, I'm surprised to see such low ratings. Granted, many of you are correct: there are far better one-drop creature cards out there than this one, but that's what creates balance. Not every soldier in an army is going to be a fantastic warrior. Besides, simple, plain cards like this one also help to increase the value and coolness (if you want to call it that) of the other one-drop cards. My biggest issue with this card is that, given it's flavor, it really should have Haste.

In black, this just might be tolerable. Maybe even in blue or red, if you have a poor selection to choose from. But with as many 1/1s for 1 there are available in white, most of them common, there's just no excuse for this.

Keep in mind, these are strictly better in EVERY sense, keeping in mind the human and soldier subtypes. If you leave room for different subtypes in the W drop position, and this list easily triples in size.

There is about 40 or so cards that are clearly better then you. Just search for white solider with cmc 1. Just about every single one of those two full pages worth is better then this fire-starter.
.5/5 for being bottom of the barrel. Some cards have to get shafted, I understand this. Still, I feel the game would have been okay with this being stronger.
