Neither Auriok Sunchaser or Carapace Forger turned out to be very good... doubt this guy will be much better

Seeing a pattern with white commons. Always seems to be a 1-drop in the second set with one of the set's main schticks. (exalted, allies, and now metalcraft)

Except that Akrasan Squire was actually from shards of alara itself, not conflux.

Yet another "do nothing" card. This is the metalcraft you do not want to play if you can avoid it. It's good only in decks that play nothing but 0 cost artifacts, though, even there it's still mediocre creature.

Wow. That's... that's good. Throw in artifact lands and this guy is basically a 3/3 for White.

How are people not realizing how good this guy is? Sure, a 1/1 for 1 is underwhelming, but if you're building your deck right he should almost never be a 1/1. A 1-drop 3/3 without a drawback is amazing, which is what this guy will be most of the time.

One-drop 3/3 sounds great until you look at what you need to get there. I think Metalcraft is better on later, stronger cards that get a larger benefit and are more likely to have the artifacts around when the benefit matters.

3/3 for W is nice, but when you have 3 cards in hand and 4 lands it doesn't matter as much.

Um... no.

There was no white, one-drop common in Conflux. Akrasan Squire was in Shards of Alara.

Zendikar block. Hada Freeblade was not a common.

Seriously, man.

Mediocre?

I'd play him over Carapace Forger because he's a soldier.

I'd play him over Auriok Sunchaser because he costs one less. I think that one mana drop is going to make him a lot better than he seems at first blush.

Just the potential for a 1 drop that hits the board as a 3/3 is amazing.

He will be good pals with Memnite, Accorder's Shield, and an excellent target for Sword of Vengeance.

EDIT:

After play testing. Everything I said is true. However, he sucks noodles for other reasons. The deck he wants to be in is an artifact heavy white weenie deck. That sort of deck is really not firing on all cylinders unless your playing both Honor of the Pure, and Tempered Steel. That deck needs to be well tuned and have a very specific supporting cast. It can work, but it takes work.

It's much more elegant, and efficient, to do either one or the other. The deck he wants to be in plays 4 Memnite, 4 Accorder's Shield, and 4 Thopter. With lots of Origin Spellbombs. This is a good deck, it's just not my deck.

As far as I'm concerned White Weenie is better off sticking to the stable Elite Vaengard or Steppe Lynx, both of which are more secure than our Recruit friend here.

Having played with this guy now in several Limited pools, I have to say I'm quite fond of him. He won't be a game-changer on his own but having him in your opening hand is always nice - a 1/1 one-drop that threatens to turn bigger is not a bad opening play. Combine with Master's Call and one other artifact for a surprise 3/3. And even if you don't get him til lategame, just think of him as a 3/3 that saves you 2 mana on his cost. Good little soldier.

Nah. He gets killed before you can really get it working. I used to think it was great when I hadn't played it, but after I realized that I really needed a deck dedicated to pumping him up. (Lots of 1 or 0 costers.) Unfortunately, decks like that don't win.

I don't know how you guys think, but I believe he stands alongside the legacy of Kird Ape, the reputed mythic card, if not better.

The fact that you usually need not worry about what colour of land you need to use to cast artifact cards, you can run a mono white artifact card that runs solely on Plains. Unlike Kird Ape, which might as well say, 'This card gains +1/+2, only if you control a Mountain AND a Forest'.

From the buff itself, this card easily trumps Kird Ape. No maths wizardry needed here to figure out that +2/+2 is better than +1/+2. This also makes it quite valuable no matter how late it comes out in the battlefield. A 3/3 for 1 white mana? Hell yeah!

On top of that, since the chances of you playing this card buffed is due to artifacts in the form of equipments, you can spend the remaining mana you have to equip the weapons laying around the field to this guy. Can you say, Sword of Vengence?

Also, I believe that being a White, Human Soldier does have it's advantages, am I right?

I must say that I underestimated this guy at first. A turn one 1/1 that becomes a 3/3 beater in a few turns is pretty darn efficient.

He's really good in an equipment deck, especially if your Puresteel Paladin is not on the board yet. The fact that he can be a 3/3 for White mana means that you can use more mana to equip a sword or a Darksteel Plate to give it some protection.

this is actually a really good card. You do not need to build white weenie just to use him, you could easily fit him in puresteel paladin or quest decks...

the problem with this guy is that if you can get metalcraft on turn one, then you probably have better cards than this guy to play

The thing about this card, though, is that unless you have a fantastic hand with three 0cmc cards, he wont be a 3/3. He'll come out as a 3/3 eventually, sure, but it's not like having a first turn 3/3 guy on the field.
Unless you have 3 memnites in your opening hand, I guess. He's OKAY, but not always going to work perfectly. 3.5/5

I understand that getting 3 artifacts in an artifact aggro deck isn't hard. That doesn't make this card good. Let me compare this to the card Frogmite. Both are undercosted beaters. But Frogmite is much better. Why? Let's list the reasons:

1. Frogmite gets buffed by cards like Tempered Steel, Master of Etherium, and Steel Overseer. He can also get sacrificed to Archbound Ravager. Recruit gets buffed by Honor of the Pure, a card that you can't afford to play in an artifact deck.

2. Frogmite is itself an artifact, helping boost the other artifact cards you have. Recruit is not.

3. Recruit is only a 1/1 if you don't have metalcraft, which will likely happen late game when you're running out of steam and your artifact count is down. Frogmite is always a 2/2.

4. Recruit can be blown out in combat if they remove metalcraft and make it a 1/1. Frogmite is again always a 2/2.

5. Recruit requires you to play White. You may want to play Red for Galvanic Blast or Shrapnel Blast or Blue for Master Of Etherium instead.

Artifact lands are fundamentally broken and shouldn't have been printed. Saying that a card is good because of cards that have proven to be too good is flawed, as the cards that are too good shouldn't be taken into consideration. It's like saying that Darksteel Forge is competitively playable because you can Tinker it out.

Ultimately, a nonartifact creature doesn't belong in an artifact creature beatdown deck unless it can single-handedly win the game by itself, as the idea of artifact beatdown is to have a ton of synergy with the artifacts you have. Having a non artifact creature is just all kinds of awkward.

Don't compare this to Wild Nacatl or even Kird Ape. It's not even in the same league as those classics.

And what if he's NOT in an artifact beatdown deck, hm? He's fantastic for Human Tribal these days, especially with all the equipment used in it.

Saying he's bad for one deck doesn't make him bad. Kind of a waste of a rant there.

The deck this guy belongs in is a battlecry deck...seriously between memnites, signal pests and equipments you should have him out as a 3/3 like 55% of the time. Good lord I mean I've had him swinging for 6 alone on turn 3 discounting the other little threats like 3/1 memnites and 1/1 or 2/1 signal pests. If nothing else he's a good agressor early game and a beatstick if he comes out with 4 or more battlecriers

I think a lot of people are looking at this wrong but still rating it correctly lol

It isn't the fact that you might be able to pull off a turn 1 3/3, though that is pretty badass. It's the fact that this is a creature who hits the board early then grows. He doesn't become worthless in later game play, and on turn four when you just had a Sword hit the battlefield last turn, you can plunk this guy down and equip.
