Yeah, new art would have been nice. This old piece looks kinda dated.

Awesome oldschool art.

Not really white. Of course, this is similar to banding, but an inner feeling says that this is more like the old green "bands with..." ability. And since it is limited to attacks, it's an early threat.
Works quite well with early vigilance or untap.... something that I miss in M11.

@giant_catterpiller
Before you say they should have changed the art look at the name of the artist... then look at what other pieces he's done... then LASTLY cry yourself to sleep for what you just said... that is all
I like the card, it just stinks the art it so bad. And @combobuilder, just because other art he's done is good it doesn't mean that this is. @Cheza, bands with other was technically in every color, there was a cycle of lands that gave the ability, there was just only one creature printed with it, Old Fogey, and Master of the Hunt which made "bands with other" tokens (at least originally).

this is a much better card then people give it credit for. The ability to give an attacking creature +1/+1 can swing the tide in some cases; the fact that it's a 1 drop makes it even better. I was very happy to see this back in Standard

Not a bad 1-drop. Solid mid-pack choice for those running white in sealed/draft.

@Cheza You hit the nail on the head with an alternative to banding... which is secondary in green, and of which "bands with other" is a variant.
Of those 13, ten are white, one is green. Oddly, Ghost Warden is actually ranked a little higher than its identical green predecessor Wyluli Wolf, though that could just be because it's newer and Spirit is a more relevant creature type than Wolf.

To become a veteran in MTG, all it takes is to survive one combat phase (probably turn 2), then sit back and cheer your buddies on? Dear god...
Still, he's not terrible. Two decent subtypes and the ability to pump something that gets through means that he's still useful.

This card rocks face in pauper cube drafts. Unlike exalted 1-drops like Akrasan Squire, the Veteran actually gets better when you attack with multiple creatures because you can decide which attacker gets the bonus after your opponent declares blockers. This can make it very difficult for your opponent to assign blockers correctly, since he has to consider the possibility that you'll pump up a blocked attacker to trade with or trump the blocker. Or if you're playing R/W you can just pump an unblocked attacker to put his life total within burn range of 0. There's actually a fair amount of strategic depth involved when you're playing with or against this card.

Did you notice that, since Samite Healer was discontinued in M10, this is as close as we've come to it in a core set?
There are in fact no other repeatable ways to buff one target creature mid-combat in M10, M11, M12, or M13!
I wonder if that's because it makes the math too hard for new players, or too hard for computers...

Wait wait wait... on the original printing in Visions, the flavour text said that to survive a war was a dishonour. Now it's a "gift" and point of pride?

Still, the companion creatures -- X/Y creatures with "{T}: target quality creature gets +X/+Y" -- mostly appear in white creatures as soldiers and spirit:
Infantry Veteran
Alaborn Veteran
Kjeldoran Guard*
Kjeldoran Elite Guard*
Serra Advocate
Stern Marshal
Vigilant Sentry (once threshold is achieved)
Angelic Page
Ghost Warden
Kabuto Moth
Anaba Ancestor (Minotaurs only, please)
Wyluli Wolf
Crenellated Wall

Infantry Veteran has gone soft in his old age.
