Why would anyone put such a lame creature that dies so easily with a tao abillity that you can't you activate it by the time you need it? better play a Cancel instead

I love the flavor text on this card. Its also not too bad either, invest in a counterspell and bait your opponent to kill this instead of Guile, or have it ready for once he hits the field.

Fictionarious, that doesn't work, because Counterspell itself hits the graveyard, sending Energy Field to the graveyard as well. Of course, it CAN save Lorthos.

Ah, well, I meant just Lorthos. That would have been enough, really.

Why play this card instead of Counterspell? Well why not use both in a mono blue control? You see, you will play this on turn three or a turn when it is safe to play it, don't play it on turn three if an opponent has something threatening. And any turn after the turn you played this card=free counter.

+ another comment for it: Once you've countered their stuff, you can ping them with it, 1 by 1. Plus its still a counter if they try funny stuff. Yum.

A Cancel on two feet. Useful if you're playing against a discard-heavy opponent and want to keep your counterspell on the field, but obviously not the most efficient way in the galaxy to do that. Situatioanl at best, maybe good in a Wizard Tribal.

id just throw it in a deck if you need more counters, there arnt very many hard counters out there and this is one of the closest. i agree i would in most situations perfer a counterspell or even a cancel but having a blocker can be usefull too.

This guy might not be "as good as" cancel on its own, but can be a little nasty once combined with some kind of repeatable ressurection like Debtor's knell or mass ressurections like Living Death.
Sure, you *Could* ress a game ender instead, but that isn't as fun ;)

You play this instead of counterspell or cancel so you have a counterspell later even when your mana is tapped out. At worst you force someone to blow their removal (if they even have any) on your 3 CMC creature. At best it is a visible force of will. Severely underrated. I learned the hard way when playing against someone with this card and I was locked out of playing anything big.

Alone it is one of worse counterpells with big drawback of having to pay mana one turn earlier than it can be used.
However in combination with Æther Vial and Fervor it can be even better than famous Force of Will.

Everybody is looking at this card as just another counterspell, forgetting that there are advantages to this card being a creature card instead of an instant.

For one, you can make copies of it through various means like Soul Foundry. Secondly, there are many instances where sacrificing a creature may be beneficial, such as with Proper Burial. Third, cards like Remembrance and Guiding Spirit (especially in combination) remove alot of the negative aspects of sacrificing a creature. Lastly, although it'd have summoning sickness on the first turn, with Aluren this is a free counterspell.

This is not a good general purpose counterspell, but in the right deck this can actually be an above average one.

Fool's Demise can get annoying with this.

An underrated card. Although it usually only makes for mediocre or very situational use, it can be very useful when copied over and over again. Followed Footsteps on this card entirely won me a game all on it's own. I had about 5 extra copies in the last few turns before the final attack.

Seal of Cancel. I'd play it.

If it had haste it would be more like a Seal of Cancel. As is, it's simply not good enough.

The thing is, it can be circumstantially better than a standard instant counterspell. If your deck is geared the right way you can use its creatureness to your advantage. any repeatable reanimate card (like volrath's stronghold) and you can use it over and over. Although I would think something like Mystic Snake would do a better job but redundant spells help consistency.

YES! A prepaid counterspell to protect my win condition spell from counterspells? Now my GU Overrun deck won't be one Mana Leak away from total failure on turn four or five. If I don't need it, it's an extra body to boost.

I can see how a regular counterspell will be better than this in a lot of cases, but this is actually exactly what I came looking for, so this card should exist.

Compare to Patron Wizard.

With Soul Collector/viridian longbow combo out and anything that can pump the toughness one more, you can ping it, counter said spell, and get it back over and over... don't know if its really worth doing competitively, but its fun... if of course you are the evil bastard of your group.

I love reanimating Sun Titan, pulling out my entombed Lightning Greaves and then finishing it off by bringing back daring apprentice and equipping the greaves to him post combat.

So Buried Alive, Entomb, Reanimate. 3 card combo, faster with rituals. Pulled it off plenty of times.
