Soul Collector seems better, but this one also turns the creature into zombies so that could be an advantage.

Why give it deathtouch and a ping ability when you can make it fight other creatures?
Also, it'd be nice to give him deathtouch and a ping ability, but it's also possible to just ping something right before it dies to, say, Tragic Slip.

This is one of the iconic powers of Zombies. This is probably the ultimate card for Zombie tribal flavor, more practical than Zombie Apocalypse.
Definitely a great card. 5/5 for not just giving all the good powers to Angels and Demons (though they got the lion's share)

Very powerful in limited.
Pulled one at the prerealease and this is what really helped me score hits on my oppenent. They often had to chose whether they wanted to lose their chump blocker to me or take three damage. And to make it really annoying I would power him up with soulbound or Unhallowed Pact XD.

Strikes me as a bit reminiscent of the Ghost Council of Orzhova (just an interest tip-bit). A good effect, which, speaking of reminiscence ,this is very much like Soul Collector except of course without morph, although it does include an excellent tribal bonus and better toughness.
Definitely superior to The Wretched. Zombies have much better tribal support than Demons, and Dread Slaver can use its ability on the defense as well.

It eats up the little guys sure, but Death Baron is a great lord to place with him in Zombie tribal as that way it can eat up the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigger guys.

It's been said in part, but I run this guy in a G/B rampish zombie deck with Death Baron along with Prey Upon and Ulvenwald Tracker. It's pretty effective, though that might just be because Recurring Nightmare is in it as well lolz.

Only real problem I see with him is the 3 power. Best fix is to give him deathtouch, increase his power, or use removal to kill a creature surviving an attack from it. I like Cemetery Reaper or Death Baron to increase his power and toughness permanently, any kind of Giant Growth type effect for a temporary. I like Quietus Spike to give the deathtouch. Make your opponent decide between giving you his creatures or losing more than half his life. Removal is pretty obvious and up to your preference. I wouldn't say he's a great card, but he can be with very little assistance (and the assistance he requires is very versatile), I think he's definitely underrated here. Unlike Sengir Vampire, his effect is worth the effort.

trying hard to play this in a mono-black EDH deck, since it's got such flavor - how about equip with Lashwrithe and really make them chump block? problem is, most of our EDH games have too many tokens, which fizzle at the graveyard...
