Can anyone help me out with how spells with kicker would work with this card? Do you get a chance to pay the kicker (or multikicker), or does is it played with its basic cost?

You get yo play it, with all that entails, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to kick the living shite out of cards you play with it (there's no difference between 'cast' and 'play' is there?). And oh man, would those things ever be kicked.

This (and maybe Lorthos) is why Quest for Ula's Temple was printed. Use Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to turn your opponents lands into Swamps and then steal stuff while bashing them senseless. You could also use Bazaar Trader to give them a Swamp or Island.

Wow, a great multi-coloured card from nowhere in a mono-coloured set.
Stealing a Time Walk or a Cruel Ultimatum would be sick.

I'm not absolutely certain, but I think that the kicker cost isn't free since it isn't officially part of the mana cost. So, you could use all of your available mana on the kicker and get the spell for free, I guess.

To be clear, you cannot kick the spells you're casting for free from the graveyard.

It's too bad it calls for combat damage...I had an awesome idea of turning him into a Yawgmoth's Will on legs, where you plink yourself for 1, then play an instant or sorcery from your own graveyard. THAT would be an original deck.

@ bette
u can choose whether to pay or not to for the kicker or multi-kicker. becoz the mana cost on the top right hand corner of the selected sorcery or instant is waive for free.

Cthulhu Has Risen! Too bad you can't steal fireballs. It's like they made this specifically for my swampwalk deck. I replaced Mahamoti Djinn with this guy.

Wrex can battle Goliath Sphinx and Sphinx of Jwar Isle for the finisher spot in U/B control decks. Despite the lack of shroud, his huge toughness and Black color puts him out of reach for just about all removal except path, o-ring, DOJ, and terminate. Plus, his ability is just sick. Free Memory Plunders for the rest of the soon-to-be-over game is very nice to have.

Playing against a pure burn deck, I have found this card to be very hilarious. Even if the opponent doesn't have too many sorcery's or instants, the idea that it's islandwalk AND swampwalk is priceless. 5/5

Me and a friend made a deck for our buddy who had no cards of his own and it featured 2 Wrexials, not to mention a Nemesis of Reason and Lorthos. But the worst part was the fact that we made it a black and blue counter/milling deck. So he could stop us from doing anything, then he would get rid of our cards before we could use them, them use them against us! It was then that we realized...we had created a monster....

I didn't expect to see anything like this guy in here. I thought it was just gonna be slightly dull stuff like Goliath Sphinx without crazyawesome abilities. 4.5

Mislabeled as a kraken. If it really was, I'm pretty sure this would cost like... 10 more and make you sac 5 islands every time you look at it.

ridiculously cheap cost imo.. but the cost itself doesn't matter much when its colors have a lot of cards that allow you to bypass paying for the cards you cast

hey that's a nice plains/forest/mountain you have. i'll just put contaminated ground and slam you with wrexial! and for target sorcery i choose rite of replication.

Wolfv, you read my mind. EDH was made for cards like this. Plus, whats more fun than taking and kicking an opponents Coquerer's Pledge? Taking their Nomads Assembly (yes I know thats going to be cencored) right after thanks to double strike or an extra combat phase.

Works awesome in a Mill/Discard deck... Which is why I'm quite sure he costs blue andblack. But in my opinion I like him best in his place in my Ula's Temple deck that runs four Stormtide Leviathans

iunno something about a kraken using mage sorcery doesn't satisfy my flavor taste buds... when i think kraken, I think squid...big squid...squid that makes emrakul, the aeons torn run crying home to its messed up eldrazi mom because it took its candy...face bashing :P
the evasion is nice, but the ability after would be cooler if it spawned tokens or annihilated specific things, or made itself bigger and harder to stop...iunno...it'd feel better

If my opponent has blaze in their graveyard, do I instantly win? can't I set X to 999999999999999 if I want to then not pay the mana cost?

@Mudbutt_on: Nah, you're thinking of Leviathans. Krakens are generally pretty cool, 'cept for the Polar variety.
@Ninjakraken: You can't pay X costs when you cast without paying...'setting' X to a certain amount would require paying a mana cost, which you obviously aren't doing.
What's that? You cast hex and the only card i have left on the battlefield is Wrexial? But Wrexial is from Soviet Russia, my friend...

Erik's Random card 7/9/2011
Sometimes in development you find out the lead designer is super passionate about a card, and you try to not mess it up. This is one of those cards.
This character is a story character. Ken Nagle, the lead designer of Worldwake, made this card. He had a clear idea of what he wanted.
3UUB Islandwalk, Swampwalk Whenever CARDNAME deals combat damage to a player, you may exile target instant or sorcery card in that player's graveyard. If you do, copy it and you may play the copy with or without paying its mana cost. 5/8
Why with or without? Ken mildly preferred free, but he didn't want his card to be mangled in case free was absurd. So he was indicating "this part isn't important to me".
Mike Turian, the lead developer of Worldwake, did what Ken asked. He left the design as is, and chose the "free spell" option. If you want to see Ken talk about designing the card, you can see him here:

I find it hilarious that Ken designed this card solely to punish players who play Time Stretch in EDH games. His dream general. The guy knew what he wanted and made it a reality, you gotta respect that.
