Yea, well 7 cards would have been totally overpowered. As it is, a nice powerful card, but not overpower in my opinion

This is a super-efficient creature. 7/7 with trample is par for the course, and the rest just sweetens the deal, giving you something no matter the case, as long as it's not countered.

Agreed, Momentous Fall turns this guy into a 14 life gain, and a free 8 card draw.

My Duskdale Wurms are worthless now. Sigh. I realize that Wizards is a business and they're going to do whatever they have to to make a profit, but if they keep making the cards I have superfluous by printing ones that are just flat-out better, I'll have to quit so I don't spend myself into oblivion.

This creature is stupid. 7 mana for a 7/7 trampler, that gives you life AND a card when it dies. Who approved something stupid like this? a 7/7 trampler for 7 is cheaper than usual but I can bite. the 7 extra life ought to cost one or two extra as should the card.

Love the idea of mana-efficient fatties! Real improvenemt compared with the big Mana Costs of Alara beast like Ridge Rannet.

For an uncommon the dude is pretty good. A 7/7 trampler for 7 is a bit too expensive and under the power curve, but gaining some life and drawing a card in case it dies ain't bad. Not broken or too powerful, but in some decks it makes sense.

Put Splinter Twin on this guy and laugh.

"High, this here's my twin. He also is a 7/7 trampler that gives me 7 life. Oh, no, he's leaving after beating your face. Oh well, i gets a card anyways."

I Love this guy compared to Duskdale Wurm. I've been looking for a good replacement for him in Standard, and this Wurm takes the cake. For the same CMC, it has equal power & toughness and static abilities, while also allowing for card draw and uber life gain!

I have no idea what this is only a common... Beats the pants off most of the Rares in the set.

@ DRKLCN. Splinter Twin exiles it. You only draw when he is put into the graveyard. However the life gain is accurate. I made this mistake when I had this guy Ousted at the release party.

I love this card. I don't think its too overpowered - I mean, it doesn't automatically win you the game, and its expensive to play. Finally there's a really efficient seven mana creature - I mean, this card basically reads "There's really no reason to ever play Enourmous Baloth." And if it gets destroyed it's not quite as depressing, because you get the cards and life. I like how it features two of green's sometimes ignored abilities: gaining life and drawing cards.

... so we just got Duskdale Wurm back in M11.
I was actually hoping that we would when M10 came out and it wasn't in there.
But after this guy has been released I'm actually sad to see it reprinted.

Is it to be assumed that the owner of the Wurm draws the card? I was playing a free-for-all when my friend used his Captivating Vampire to vampirize my brother's Pelakka Wurm. When the thing finally died, we assumed my brother, the owner (but not controller) of the creature gets the draw. However, I'm not sure about this.

Either way, I freaking love this guy. For any other color it'd be powercreep, but for green I think it's just fine. The draw ability is surprising but nice.

This is one of those cards that you can only truly appreciate if you're a primarily green player. This guy just hits all the bases. The life gain means you can afford to spend the first few turns ramping instead of throwing chump blockers on to the battlefield, and the mere fact that you get *something* in return for getting your creature Doom Blade'd is so nice. Outside of that, a 7/7 trampler. Phenomenal card. 5/5

Okay, this thing is kinda OP'd.

First of all, the only drawback of any kind one can find for this is that it's green but only a 7/7 for 7. Any other color'd have 6/7 for 7 or less with an ability. Trample would have made it make sense as a 7/7. But wait, then you get a boost when it comes into the field, which is actually an extremely large life boost. Most life spells give you maybe 3 or 4. However, what really puts a nail in the coffin is that they gave it ANOTHER bonus ability. Geez, he's just the gift that keeps on giving.

Very good card, especially for uncommon rarity. But why is the rating so high, 4.5/5? Yes, it works well with mimic vat, but otherwise it is just a mediocre re-animator. It is too expensive to hard cast, unless you play a very slow format. This is not Akroma, Angel of Wrath. I like this card and find it useful, but not THAT useful. A 4.2/5.0 overall sounds right.

First: It looks cool. But I think all worms look cool.

I guess a 1/1 for G when it comes into play you gain 1 life when its put into a graveyard you draw a card would be too good... but it is my dream.

@ Aun

don't you mean "draw 1/7th of a card"?

This is one of the most efficient cards ever made. 3 different effects, all well rounded, and none are negative.

gaining 7 life in one going costs, at best, 2, but probably 3.
drawing 1 card costs 1, on average
and a 7/7 with trample costs 7+
do the math.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why a wurm would cause its summoner to gain life? Doesn't make sense to me. The draw-a-card bit could be explained as being an item found in the ever-hungry wurm's gullet after it's dead.

Erik's Random card 7/5/2011

This card started off in design as a nice uncommon.

6G
When CARDNAME is put into a graveyard from play, draw a card.
7/7

Ken Nagle did not like this card; it is a fatty, but it about replacing itself with another card. However other players loved it, and it got pushed:

3GGG
Trample
When CARDNAME is put into a graveyard from play, you may draw two cards.
7/7

This was pretty crazy, as sealed decks might have two them.

It got pulled back to a reasonable level:

4GGG
Trample
When CARDNAME is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may gain 7 life and draw a card.
7/7

This was powerful when it died. However either gaining 7 or drawing a card is a nice reward, so rather than give it all at once, we give you two fun rewards.

That's about it. We (well except Ken), loved the card, and found it was a fun part of "battlecruiser Magic", while Ken thought this was more "incremental value Magic". He has his point, but I like the card :)

One of my favorite creatures from Rise, for certain. I was so bummed at the Prerelease sealed event about not having gotten any big Eldrazi until I had it pointed out to me that I had three of these guys and two Overgrown Battlements to ramp up to them. There are arguably other, better 7-drops in green, but this guy is still VERY strong, leaves one hell of an impression on your opponent, and won't break the bank should one want a playset. Pelakka Wurm will always be a card dear to my heart.

It's possible in Standard, but unlikely to happen (basically takes a god draw with no interruption.)
Turn 1: Forest, Joraga Treespeaker
Turn 2: Forst, level the Treespeaker, tap it for Explore, Forest, Llanowar Elves

@ Rashid_Clark

The life-gain is caused by a combination of special minerals found within the Wurm's outer layer of skin. When someone summons a Pelakka Wurm, these minerals react to the frequencies of the call and create a link between the two entities. It is because of this link that the one controlling Pelakka receives healing energy from the now-active channel.

Love this card. Awesome artwork. Really cool Wurm concept. I can hear the noise it's making in that image. I always enjoy how huge these creatures can be.

Cheers

I argue that this is better than Thragtusk which was inspired by this. Several points:

+Gain 7 life over 5
+Uncommon so you can get more of them easier/cheaper
+Draws a card
+7/7 for 7 in green
-Costs 7

Thrag I think gets more hype because it costs 2 less and instantly replaces itself, where as this can only get you a card BlackEnergyTapTapEnergyRed.

DjVortex

I cannot emphasize enough how good this card is, especially in multiplayer. Sure, it's not a very fast card, but in a mono-green, or heavily-green mana ramp deck this is a must. (Even without much trickery or fancy combos, and with a bit of luck, you can get it out on turn 4.)

Lifegain may not be a win condition, but it certainly helps (especially since if you are playing with this, your deck is quite slow anyway, so the "free" lifegain you get from this is going to help you a lot). A 7/7 trampler is nothing to scoff at, and drawing the card when it dies makes this almost broken.
