This guy needs trample. The other golems in the block have benefits: Razor has vigilance, Spire has flying, Dross has fear, and Oxidda has haste. Why did this golem not get green's iconic trample?

Maybe cuz it has better stats. It's a 5/4, as opposed to being a 3/2 or a 3/4.

But it'd be much more flavorful if he'd have trample.

while I do agree that trample would make Tangle one big bad dude, the reason he doesnt have it is because hes just bigger then the other gollems, hes pretty much a mid-game cudgle used to punish your opponents, at least for a while
I like using him in my deck because I have so many beasts and magics that are focused on gaining land quickly, I once hade 7 mana on turn 5 by using kodamas reach third turn and summoning silverglade elemantalmy fourth, then I just threw down Tangle golem for free,
Needless to say my roommate wasnt happy...

He's usually played on turn three with the help of an extra mana source.
But in a deck that hits rampant growth on turn 2 he can be played on turn three with a rancor or similar as well.

He doesn't have trample because there are so many inexpensive methods of giving creatures trample in most green decks, and because he's bigger than the other golems.
on turn 3 there's no reason why he shouldn't be coming out for 2-3 mana, and 0-1 on turn 4. rancor and slam.

What's interesting is this guy (just like the others) comes out T3 if you have just 1 mana-dork. I.E. an Elves puts this guy out T3. Really fun follow up to Manaplasm; in MonoG he's still a 5/4 for 4 (or less) making him slightly over the curve; but with lots of shinanigans.
He also curves into beloved rancor on T4; making him a 7/4 trampler.

Part of a cycle of golems from Darksteel, each with Affinity:
The size of this creature makes it interesting. Spined Wurm stats with the option to get cheaper mean that this can be out pretty early with a little bit of acceleration, which green excels in. That's nothing to scoff at, especially if you are running Mighty Emergence, Soul's Majesty (potentially a free creature and drawing 5 cards for ) or other Naya "5 power or more" spells. It also is a decent Evolve enabler, often coming down for cheap and above the curve. As an added bonus, it can help you deal with intimidate on defense.
Interestingly enough, these creatures also have an interesting interaction with the Dragon enchantments from Scourge, such as Dragon Fangs. While they have a higher printed CMC, they can actually come out much sooner, allowing you to get benefit from these auras earlier than anticipated. Incidentally, the abilities they grant benefit this golem in particular quite a bit, as it is a virtual vanilla.

These seem to be the successors of Mirrodin's unremarkable cycle:
