Mill cards are so good! I prefer Nemesis of Reason, but if you have a mono-blue mill deck, this is a must-have!

Raven Guild Master +Crafty Pathmage = OWNAGE!

Question about morph: If you attacked with three 2/2 creatures (this guy being one of them), and your opponent blocks two of them (but not this guy), could you flip this guy up for his morph cost RIGHT BEFORE damage was dealt to the player in order to get his effect? And without your opponent changing his mind about who he was going to block?

Alpha: Ah, that's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure. Now I really like morph cards.

For a 3cc 1/1 creature, the potential for long-term card advantage here is actually mind-blowing.

Why are people talking about card advantage? This card nets 0 card advantage. He's also expensive and fragile.

As for 'make him unblockable and go to town' - why not just put whispersilk cloak on a dude with 4 power? Same result basically. 5 swings and they're out. Sure gaining life is possible whereas gaining library really isn't, but then it's easier to make a deck that does damage to go along with that unblocked creature than it is to make a deck which assists the kill with milling.

Not that he isn't a good or fun card. He's just being greatl overrated here.

Quite likely my favourite card in the entire game, for both the brilliant artwork and the sheer abject terror he inspires in my opponents.

Give him a Whispersilk Cloak and watch him go to town on a library with impunity. Even though he's slightly overshadowed by the recently released Nemesis of Reason, there's a distinct preference in that the Master removes cards from the game instead of sending them to the graveyard, from where they can usually be returned.

Occasionally I like to put one into a Soul Foundry, crank out half a dozen clones and send them all in at once. I've never seen anyone panic and scramble for a Holy Day card so quickly!

One of the first blue cards I'd ever seen, back in 2002.

Might as well read: "Target opponent discards Terminate."

SAYAHAYAHAYFFFFUUUUUU--WAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!

why hasn't this card gotten more fame? also, why wasn't a Transmute update put in the Dimir Guild?
also, WHY DON'T I HAVE 50 OF THEM?!

That's some pretty powerful milling on a stick, probably worth it in a milling deck that has enough blue. That said, worthless everywhere else.

Here's a list of cards that make this guy unblockable. From best to worst in descending order:

#1 Writ of Passage Very cheap, permanent, and it has tricky synergy with Trepanation Blade.
#2 Cloak of Mists Cheap, permanent.
#3 Shadow Rift Cheap, cantrip, temporary.
#4 Distortion Strike Very cheap, temporary.
#5 Artful Dodge Cheap, temporary, castable from Graveyard.
#6 Infiltrate Cheap, temporary.
#7 Veil of Secrecy Temporary.
#8 Ghostform Temporary.
#9 Steel of the Godhead Permanent, expensive.
#10 Protective Bubble Permanent, expensive.
#11 Whispersilk Cloak Permanent, expensive.

If you're going to try and make a deck with this guy and Unblockable cards, you might also consider Sigil of Sleep/Curiosity

I am so happy that Raven Guild Initiates eventually stop playing with birds and become awesome mill engines.
