When I first read this card, I thought it was terribly narrow...
Until it was pointed out that in a deck with no creatures (or just manlands), this is a better Evacuation!
Also, Changelings.

I've seen someone play a Wrexial EDH deck using stuff like Quest for Ula's Temple. They'll be happy to see this card...

RELEASE THE KRAKEN! If you don't, I'll just bounce everything else, now isn't that nice?

Really cool but who on this planet has ever used the word "whelming" in a sentence ever?

Is no one going to make a "that was underwhelming" joke right now? ...Everyone's thinking it.

Arguably the spell most likely to give H. P. Lovecraft a nervous breakdown.

Hoses Pack Rats, especially if you kill the original first.

When can I get my Thassa vs Kiora duel deck?

Affects Fish. And Whales. And Sponges. And Horses. But, like, you wouldn't expect Horses to live in the water, so, ignore that last one.

Well, it's worse than evacuation simply because it's no instant.
Still, it's a nice card, and an auto-include in tribal decks. Also very nice for EDH games with Commanders with a fitting creature type.

@djh119 I'd rather see a Thassa x Kiora 'friendship' deck

Wait, Wait... What? Is this a real card? I don't believe you.

Aside from trying to build some type of deck to take advantage of the creature types mentioned on this card, it will go great in various control decks, especially those that don't have access to Supreme Verdict. I'm looking at you, UB Control.
The Grammar-Nazi within me feels compelled to point out that the plural of Octopus is Octopi *eyetwitch*

@GrayWizard: actually, Octopi is incorrect and Wizards were correct to use Octopuses. Please consult the Oxford English Dictionary if you feel your "pedantry" is actually correct.

actually, the plural of octopus is NOT octopi, since octopus was originally greek, not latin

They should have gone with the plural "Octopodes" since this is a Greek Myth inspired set, after all. They should have also have called Sanguimancy "Hemomancy" for the same reason.
@lorendorky: Many people use the word "Whelming" quite frequently, as part of the compound word "Overwhelming". ;)

So I was at a prerelease two-headed giant tournament. Both of us went blue, and I opened this and a Mnemonic Wall. He opened Tromokis. In the last game we played, we were in dire straits, facing down a heroic army ready to violate our blue butts. It was turn ten, and we desperately needed help, and I had already played the Wave. And then, like a stoic angel from on high, I topdecked the Wall. With nine mana and a large, angry squid on board. We won that match, needless to say. I guess the lesson is, any port in a tsunami.

@Syrtees - What do you mean, "otherwise?" I was agreeing with the fact that "Octopi" is incorrect.

more like OVER-whelming wave, hahaha I'll go sit in the corner.
But I'll definitely be making room for this spell in my Quest for Ula's Temple deck. While most of the creatures end up unblockable thanks to Stormtide Leviathan, I think this spell could provide an edge should things go... awry.

Technically, it should say Octopodes...

Oxford english is not spoken in polite company.
The correct term is Squishy Water Spider.

Yay!! Another blue board wipe. Will be nice to board wipe again for a resonance amount of mana lol not that Cyclonic Rift is bad, it's just sometimes I want to clear the board before dropping my Aetherling

No, you are wrong. Sealock Monster from Theros is also Octopus.
This card is so going to my MonoBlue ControlledBeatdown deck :D With Tromokratis and Shipbreaker Kraken. And so that enemy can't do anything, I also have some Vortex Elementals and Perplexing Chimeras just for the heck of it. You are going to DoomBlade my Kraken? No, have this Chimera instead, then I'll use the Doomblade to destroy the Chimera.
shares a lot in common with Damnation, but harder to make relevant. Could eventually be a thing with ravnica rotating out, and whatever sea monsters/inspired creatures dwell in Nyx.
Now that I think of it, its also similar to Wrath of God
I think the line about Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents is a red herring. The only creatures of those types in Standard are overcosted and irrelevant. This is a blue tempo-y boardwipe that resets your enters-the-battlefield effect creatures like Omenspeaker or Constellation creatures. My favorite ETB effects in Standard are Mnemonic Wall and Archaeomancer.
After Theros waves goodbye to Standard, this might make a splash in Modern Ula's Temple decks, but I still think ETB effects are the best way to school your opponent with Whelming Wave. Something something something hook, line, and sinker.

This card is so cheap boardwipe.
Floodtide Serpent,
Kraken of the Straits,
Nimbus Swimmer,
Sealock Monster,
Shipbreaker Kraken,
and Tromokratis
are your options for the current standard.
Let's hope Journey into Nyx changes that.

Thassa X Kiora Friendship deck.
This needs to be a thing.
