Well, hello there awesome removal.

Though this card is actually a huge disappointment to me.

In the spoilers for Theros, Mark Rosewater told us there would be a card with a five-world rules text, one of the words being "planeswalker".

Gain control of target Planeswalker.

WHEN, WIZARDS, WHEN??

The thing about to stomp his innards out is probably just a minotaur, but, given the camera angle, I find it much more humorous to picture a Titanic Growth'd Mr. Tumnus.

Poor Murder, first they reprinted Putrefy, now they make this. It must really feel bad to be obsoleted so hard.

Zealous Con***s

I've used it to steel venser for the -8, and a garruk wildspeaker for the -4 the turn after it was played for a super battalion in my Tajic EDH deck.

Flavor text takes a shot at heroes, but can be used to active your own heroic triggers if they are worth dying for it. 4.2/5.

Wow, they were quick in making a strictly better Murder. Nonetheless, I hate Rare, or, even worse, Mythic Rare removal. Removal should be strictly common or uncommon, in my opinion.

Rare removal is still stupid, especially for the sole reason that it has the word "planeswalker" in it.

I have never said this about a card before, but I think this one is a tad bit OP... I mean it takes a lot of effort sometimes to build a full functioning deck around a planeswalker. It takes more to get the Planeswalker out and keep it alive. Especially casting bolas. He cost 4,UBBR. So it's lame in my opinion that there is such easy removal for something that's not always easy to cast. Dreadbore atleast was a sorcery and two colors, but this is murder that can hit Planeswalkers at instant speed. It just seems unfun to me. I'll end up using it out of necessity I'm sure, but that doesn't mean I'll like it.

In an "Ascended state of mind" I made the twitter @EatHoof for players to report their epic Heroes Downfall moments. I'm using 4 for my WB Lifegain Control deck and look forward to it saving my butt.

A single target rare removal spell needs more iconic artwork, IMHO.

I find the card rather 'vanilla' regardless of the planeswalker clause. This needed stronger art to really make me want it.

This looks like a simple soldier got himself clumsily underfoot some giant beast. It doesn't really have an impact on me. I imagine an alternate artwork where some dead although badass looking hero is torn and bloodied upon the rocks on a mountain peak. Glaring over him is an equal bloodied but clearly malevolent monster/person, grinning in spite of his wounds.

It's strictly better than Murder.

I'll still be playing Putrefy for 3 mana removal, but man, oh, man, I never thought I'd see STRICTLY BETTER than Murder.

At Pro Tour Theros, the commentators were saying this should have been a split card, Murder and Mayhem.
Would that count as a reprint of Murder?

3.5/5. A -.5 for a *** name and *** artwork. A badass card like this should have a badass name and badass artwork. I barely want to own any of these because it's so lame. A minotaur stepping on some guy? Hardly seems flavorful nor powerful. Why are minotaurs even Black anyways? Plz make alternate artwork or a functional reprint of this card, and actually try this time. Not impressed.

@ silence9
Minotaurs are appropriately in black alignment. In Greek mythology Minotaurs are cursed beings who feed on human flesh. Sure, mtg has printed them in red but this is a mythology block.
Heroes often slay Minotaurs in mythology, so losing to one and calling it "downfall" actually makes sense flavor wise.

Am I the only magic player who took Greek mythology classes in school?

My only problem with this card is that as a removal spell, it currently costs more than almost every mythic and regular rare in standard (even some planeswalkers and legendary creatures). I suppose that's proof of what truly drives the magic market; demand from players (who net-deck :p ).

here's how i imagine this, a soldier comes charging at you and then a minotaur just falls from the sky and lands on the soldier, squishing him.

Sure in Bx Control you want at least 2 (probably 4 tho) but I kinda wish this wasnt a card. This and Dreadbore are making Planeswalker so much worse and I love playing decks with lots of Planeswalker, but ill still have to play 4.

Planeswalkers are amazingly powerful, and an easy way to make your deck better by spending a ton of money. I'm happy to see removal that specifically hoses them, but this... kind of rubs me the wrong way.

I was glad to see Dreadbore, because Terminate is still relevant.

I was glad to see Despise, because Ostracize is old and a little under the curve.

But I'm not happy that after seeing Murder, a simple elegant kill spell with a wonderful name, a year later we see something that renders it completely obsolete... and is currently retailing for upwards of ten dollars.

I didn't like Murder in the first place, being able to kill ANY creature, not just non-black/artifact. But this is actually kind of cool, being a Kill Anything card...

Why Hero's Downfall instead of Dreadbore? For most spells instant speed is not worth an extra mana, for example Volcanic Hammer was played in Standard but Yamabushi's Flame was not. A sorcery Advent of the Wurm at one less would've been way broken.

The main reason is probably that Rakdos isn't a deck yet. But there's a particular problem with Dreadbore that seems to be pretty important: Dreadbore doesn't kill Master of Waves. The raw power of Master often exceeds pretty much every other card in Standard at that cost. If you hold Dreadbores against one, you'd be dead, as simple as that.

Why is murder rated higher than this?
Kanra777
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This may be strictly better than murder, but only if the opponent plays a planeswalker. As of the time of this post, this card costs $10 while murder is $1. I don't think it is quite worth its price tag, but it is good. Most of the time in modern, I will just duress a planeswalker out of their hand. If that doesn't work then I could just doom blade an opponents creature to remove a blocker and deal with it by attacking. If you have these use them over murder, otherwise you don't need to pay $9 more for an occasionally better card. 4/5

Couldn't they have made this BBB? Sorcery? 4CMC? A little conditional? A strictly better murder, at this time, seems unneeded.

Well, it's done and there's no denying it's seriously powerful removal.
