I love this card. I just have one complaint about it. I could be reading this wrong, but you choose the value for X when you activate monstrosity, then monstrosity resolves and he becomes monstrous. The ability has resolved, so there is no longer an "X" value. The resolution triggers the second ability, which references a value X, but this X has never been instantiated, and therefore has no value. Am I reading the card wrong, or does this card not make any sense? Obviously I understand what Wizards was trying to have the card do, but I don't think that it actually accomplishes that with it's current wording.

So he just comes in and starts wrecking face? I like this guy.

If he's actually the format-defining superhydra that development believes him to be (right up there with Reckless Waif and...things that aren't Thragtusk), it will be based less on his own merits than on his ability to trigger double devotion. Even then, Deadbridge Goliath would be better, as it remains potentially useful after death and isn't legendary. I'm tired of talking about him being "green board wipe." He's not board wipe, ESPECIALLY when you take into account the amount of high-toughness creatures in Theros block. It takes this guy three mana to kill a goat, and then he will never kill any more goats for as long as he shall live. I mean, other than the ones who chump block him with ruthless efficiency. I get that X-costs are usually inefficient at the lower X values, but...that double-X is just a pain. It won't stop me from trying to make use of him, but I'm just disappointed that I enjoy Mistcutter Hydra, Protean Hydra, and Primordial Hydra more than this legendary mythic hydra Wizards was so excited / anxious over. Hopefully I'm wrong, but...well, you get the picture.

This looks like a slow, powerful, big-mana set. If that's true, then I see no reason why Poly here can't become a role-player in some of the stronger mono-green decks looking to dump their mana into something that will give them an advantage against creatures: the one permanent type green typically has trouble dealing with. As has been said before: give him deathtouch. Give him trample. Guess what? Nylea and her bow do both. I doubt it'll be format-warping or the cornerstone of this set's deck to beat, but Polukranos is not a terrible creature. Not sure he had to be a mythic, legendary hydra, but he's actually quite good.

I keep getting so caught up in how janky and overcosted the monstrous ability is that I forget it's a 5/5 for 4.

Super Noob Tactics:
Steal Polukranos in a RedGreen deck with Act of Treason and use up his monstrosity trigger for Green, or kill Polukranos and your opponent's one-toughness deathtouch creature for 2Green

I have a feeling there will be a lot of Monstrosity: 0 in Standard.

This is such a disappointing creature.

Yes, it's a 4 mana 5/5, but as was evident with Deadbridge goliath, mostly vanilla creatures can't cut it. They have to do something sweet immediately, or take over the game within a turn or two if left unchecked.

The problem is that its ability is just way too much mana. People say that it's green removal, and green shouldn't get removal, but when the removal is almost unplayable, does it even matter?

Deadbridge Goliath showed us that a 5/5 for 4 in green WITH upside is not constructed playable, and while this cards monstrosity is probably better than scavenge, it is also Legendary.

So I'm not really hopeful for this cards chance to break through standard.

Honestly, I'd say it's worse than Deadbridge Goliath.

Both abilities are mana sinks for when you're flooded, but even though Scavenging Ooze and Deathrite Shaman are in Standard right now, I'd rather have a mana sink that doesn't require me to have a living turn 3 or 4 5/5. +5/+5 on Polukranos would also take 11 mana, vs the 6 of deadbridge.

I just... I don't think he's worth it as long as Deadbridge Goliath is around.

I'm going to be honest here, guys: This creature pretty much sucks. Late game in a two headed giant match, I can see him being useful, maybe. However, his ability mana cost is too high; having to pay 3 cmc just to get a total of 1 damage on an opposing creature? Absolutely not. I will admit, though, that a big part of me is spoiled because of Kalonian Hydra. 3/5

It... Doesn't give me the feeling a Legendary Mythic Hydra should. It doesn't get to hilariously high power like something Primordial Hydra can... Hell it doesn't even have Trample.

Being a 5/5 for 4 is certainly awesome, especially when you get an ability that's not a drawback... Not saying this is a bad card, but it just doesn't get my inner Timmy excited.

Legality question: Since his text is written as "any number of target creatures" can you activate Monstrosity and just decide to not target any creatures at all?

Should have had Trample. It's kinda funny that something called "World Eater" can be eternally chump-blocked, without support.

You can make x equal zero so that if your opponent tries to steal it they can't use the monstrosity.

This is such a hard card to evaluate. Sure Wizards could have made it better. You can always make things better. But the question then becomes is it good for its rarity? I personally don't think so in this set. Even if this thing was a rare I wouldn't be too worried about it effecting limited too much. Its green removal sure, but its kinda slow. I wanted to use this in commander but the effect is too underwhelming. If it was something like XG: and this ability or XXG: monstrous, X can't be 0 it deals damage equal to its power divided as you choose between any number of targets this would be really good. But in both those cases its extremely strong Green removal. And I'm not sure we really want green to have access to that powerful of removal in constructed or limited.

I get it. Change on thing about it and its solid and extremely powerful removal, leave it as is and its underwhelming. *Sigh*. Oh well.

Am I the only person who has noticed this?
Monstrous can be used at instant speed.
What does this mean?
Use it with Bow of Nylea.
It's perfectly on curve, too.
3 mana -- Bow.
4 mana -- Polukranos.
5 mana -- Monstrous for 4G, kill two creatures.

When he was spoiled I was terribly unhappy with his monstrous cost of GXX. After playing with him now, I'm okay with it. Yes, its an expensive fireball. But you don't have to pay the 1 extra for each extra target, and with it being green which is the color of ramp, it'll be just as effective as a fireball. And you can activate it at any time, whereas a fireball is a sorcery.

You cannot target players, but I feel like that's not really worth counting as a con. His size pretty much will make up for that.

So after you fireball some problem or utility creatures, you can smash face with a now much larger Polukranos.

We are going to see a lot of this card in the coming months. He is a huge body with a very good activated ability that can be done at instant speed for four mana.

to those of you who think his monstrous costs to much it reallymint because not only does it do damage it also makes him stronger

So if, after I've paied 4, I pay another 7, i can deal 3 damage divided as i choose and this gets +3+3 but then this will have to take damage from all those guys combined? Too costly for what it does, especially when it can only do it once.

Now that we know how powerful Nykthos is, any card that adds to your devotion and has an X activated ability should be rated very highly.

Well, I managed to pull two of these from a fat pack (along with another mythic, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, which I would've preferred to pull two of, but...) I've had a chance to play with it. Maybe not good enough to be a mythic, but I like the idea of having a 5/5 out as soon as third turn. I've got Plasm Capture in this deck so I can wait and use the monstrosity ability later after I've countered a high-cost spell, then putting that mana into the ability to thin out the herd on somebody else's board. It doesn't trample, but that's why there's Overrun.

You don't have to try and use him to take out anything big, just take out something like a 1/1 or a 2/2. Then he just gets a little more beefy. Give him trample and when he is around a 7/7 or 8/8. An ability without a drawback just means he is a straight up 4/4 for 5, which is pretty good, but you can use him especially to take out a small, evasive creature with flying or unblockable, AND you can beef him up a little while your at it.

I don't like green. It's my least favorite color of the five. This really makes me want to play green.

Seriously, it's a one-sided boardwipe on a stick. He holds down the fort pretty well beforehand, too. Pair him with Nykthos, Shire to Nyx and ramp.

@ Steaditup

Im sure that was the plan. I know when I drop a 5/5 for four, I attack with it. Especially since you can legitimately drop it turn 3 after a turn 2 Bow with a little Elvish Mystic action.

Really, you only need to pay 2G to kill two creatures that way.

3.506/5 is not the rating I would expect on this card. Compare Deadbridge Goliath, which ranks a half-star higher (4.040/5 currently) and saw exactly zero high-level play. Either you guys are hate-rating or just plain clueless.

Love this card. Was playing a game with Polukranos out along with a gyre sage and Vorel of the Hull Clade. Kept doubling the gyre sage until it tapped for 128 green mana, monstrous Polukranos for a green and a tapped gyre sage and killed every creature on all of my opponent's feild.

Maybe it's just because I remember a time when Ernham Djinn was amazing, and that was pre-Judgment, but a 5/5 for 4 mana with no drawbacks should always be awesome. The fact that he has another ability that is awesome makes this card, well, awesome. Doesn't matter that he's a Legend. Won't need more than one.
