its strength is the type "elf merfolk" and the fact it is vanilla

The grace of the forest, the spirit of the sea, and the wings of a merfolk elf.

Good old Gaea's Skyfolk, 2 mana 2/2 flying creature is always a good creature.

What have they done?! An Elf Merfolk? Awesome.

Elf...Merfolk? Huh. Oh well, it's still a pretty good card. 4/5 from me.

This is possibly the best two-drop flyer in the game. Kor Skyfisher is obviously better with landfall or comes into play effects, but few things beat the simplicity and value of this card.
Edit: Whoops, forgot about the strictly better (but not by much) Azorius First-Wing.

"But Mr.Wizard of the Coast, how can it be an Elf and a Merfolk?"

"Well son, when an Elf and a Merfolk love each other very much, they get together and..."

ELF MERFOLK? Wow, maybe one day I may see a Samurai Vampire ^_^

I like Razorfin Hunter better for a lolz creature. The combination is even more interesting, and the effect is fantastic for its cost.

Would I be tiresome if I pointed out that neither elves nor merfolk can typically fly?

Hell with it, it's still cool.

I like this cycle very much because it allows you to build red/blue or green/blue or even red/green/blue merfolk decks, and don't forget Ceta Disciple! :) However, if you don't exploit the creature types and its blocking ability, it's a worse attacker than Jhessian Infiltrator.. Oh, and nice artwork! :)

The first wing isn't better. He can't be enchanted with say, rancor, that you can slap on this babe and have her swinging for 4 or 6 without losing card advantage. She counts towards both Elf and Merfolk types, both running some pretty crazy lords out there. Also, your changellings happen to be Mutant Ninja Turtles and Vampire Samurai Knights.

I'm sorry, but this was my favorite card ever since it was printed, and the reason behind my fascination with GreenBlue. I wish they made more of these.

On that note though, why are all new GreenBlue creatures Elf Wizards, why no Merfolk Druids? I'd die for a block with at least an underlying Merfolk Druid theme.

Not seeing the Green. Definitely White or Blue, Blue or Black, or even Blue or Red. Maybe the cost/power ratio? Anymore two of ANY colors easily justifies a 2-cost 2/2 plus a couple abilities but back then, maybe not so much? Merfolk are also well known for flying now a days. Again, maybe back then it wasn't the case.

Shroud might be a more color appropriate choice today. Maybe even a little card draw?

@Dr. Pingas
Eventide had Green or Blue Merfolks called Selkies.

But it might be coming soon. As BlackFlame mentioned, there is a new planewalker in the lore from the new DotPW game called Kiora Atua. She is a Green or Blue Merfolk associated with large creatures. (Think Quest for Ula's Temple)

I love this card for its beautiful art and wacky creature types. That said, I can't think of many situations in which I'd rather run this than Jhessian Infiltrator.

"They said i could be anything....
so I became a Skyfolk Merfolk kinda flying elf."

What about the flavor text:
"The grace of the forest and the spirit of the sea" ... IN THE SKIES!

This is the perfect 2 drop for a Fable of Wolf and Owl GreenBlue deck.

Incredible artwork, and still a very solid card even today. I still play three in my G/U Deck. Actually I began magic buying a Theme Deck from apocalypse that featured it on the box. Wizards should reprint it, especially with return to ravnica comming. I imagine it being buddy with Coiling Oracle. If there could be a Snake Elf Druid, why not an Elf Merfolk

I can think of one very important reason to run this over Jhessian Infiltrator: the Merfolk creature type.

Part of an interesting cycle of 2-mana enemy color gold common creatures in Apocalypse:

Gaea's Skyfolk - GreenBlue (Elf Merfolk)
Goblin Legionnaire - RedWhite (Goblin Soldier)
Llanowar Dead - BlackGreen (Zombie Elf)
Putrid Warrior - BlackWhite (Zombie Soldier - later Warrior was added)
Razorfin Hunter - BlueRed (Merfolk Goblin)

Invasion, the first expansion in the block, had a cycle of 2-mana friendly color gold common creatures, all of which had protection from their shared enemy color:

Galina's Knight - WhiteBlue (Merfolk Knight)
Llanowar Knight - GreenWhite (Elf Knight)
Shivan Zombie - BlackRed (Barbarian Zombie)
Vodalian Zombie - BlueBlack (Merfolk Zombie)
Yavimaya Barbarian - RedGreen (Elf Barbarian)

As for this card itself, it's not bad. It can block flyers unlike Jhessian Infiltrator , has two extremely relevant creature types, and even helps these often-grounded tribes block flyers. A very playable common.

Don't think about it too much, it's Simic-colored after all.

I love that art, pity about the border though I'm really not a fan of the early Gold cards. This is the kinda' art I'd love to see more of in Simic at the moment. In any case, it's a solid enough card, no qualms there. 3/5 for the card, 5/5 for the art.
