Zombie Scout types for the outlander make so much more sense than Zombie Merfolk. Then again, in a game I played the other day my friend stole a Pelakka Wurm with a Captivating Vampire and thus had a Vampire Wurm, so stranger creature types have existed (how about Weird?).
Protection from Green always makes me laugh, though. Not the most common protection thrown onto creatures.

"It's a shame you won't live to see the irony." Gotta love double entendres where the punnier meaning is more obvious.

Vodalian Zombie was important, though, for letting U/B control stave off Blastoderm all day. She had an important niche at the time.

Part of Invasion's cycle of 2-mana friendly color gold common creatures, all of which had protection from their shared enemy color:
As for this card itself, it's somewhere near the middle to bottom of the usefulness chart. Protection from green mostly helps it block green fatties, but this does not mitigate trample. Since green lacks many removal spells, it is not nearly as valuable to protect against as other colors. However, it does have two relevant creature types and can benefit from cards like Lord of the Undead and Lord of Atlantis.

Pretty attractive for a dead fish....... try not to think about the smell.
