6 mana to get a good card to your hand (if you have one in your graveyard) ......you could just play ...i don't know ......a good card instead.

it's that colorless recursion that makes this cool. Now decks like mono red EDH can bring things back from the graveyard

A way to bring back planeswalkers is especially nice for mono red.

I'm not sure about this. Glimpse of the unthinkable does for two mana and in one turn what this thing does in 10 turns.
The recursion ain't bad, but five mana ain't exactly cheap either. If you run black, then rise from the grave costs less and puts a creature directly into play.

Pros like me will be using this card often for recursion. The mill is a nice option, too.
This will really shine in self-mill: It provides easy milling from a very early point in the game and later on lets you fetch what you need from all the stuff you've dumped. Combine with a turn two Deranged Assistant and you'll be getting off your graveyard strategies in no time.

Isn't this card supposed to be some sort of book? A detailed unit guide on how to use ninjas?
I don't get why this card is rated so low! It's an artifact that costs 1, you can use it immediately to mill 1 card (especially useful if someone just tutored for something that puts it on the top of their library/scry/top). And down the road if you want to grab something, then yes you can. 5 mana to grab something you need is not a big deal.
I mostly play EDH, so this card is golden. 5/5

At first glance at this card, was like WTH? But after this weekend I can see the utility that it definitely has. EDH for sure, Limited for sure, Constructed has a lot more better choices.

Mill and colorless recursion? Hell yes! Going into every non-green deck I own (and maybe some green ones too!)

To all the people saying "Why not just play a tutor?", nothing is stopping you from playing those while this card does its magic. Besides the single generic mana to cast it, it basically lets you search your library mana free while you're casting those other spells.

Very good EDH card. Ever got tired of someone using a sensei's divining top? How about a vampiric tutor and other tutors that put the desired card on top of a deck? Ever had that great enchantment that got destroyed early game and you wish you could have it back? Dredge (self-mill), Zombies, Mill should more or less auto include this card. Think how much milling will be happening if this is in your opening hand as EDH games generally go long. Would someone really use a kill spell/effect on it unless its a recurrable (goblin tinkerer) effect. And if they do use a disenchant or the like, that is one less spell to use against your real threats and you've made your opponent make a tactical error.

Really cool card. I'll play it in Karn EDH. There's never been a way to get back any type of card in any color (unless you count Noxious Revival, but that still has color identity.)
Also, is this supposed to be a paper shredder?

This card singlehandedly just put my Glissa, the Traitor EDH deck over the top. It's an artifact, so I can use Glissa to repeatedly recur it to recur non-artifact cards like Demonic Tutor, Damnation, Entomb, Krosan Grip, and all sorts of goodies. And to top it off, I can use it to mill myself to get more even more goodies to recur.

Yeah the milling isn't very efficient in any sense, but the return effect is definitely worthwhile.

Not so much of a thing in Standard as long as mill isn't a viable strategy, but compared to the original Millstone, has a bit more versatility. Yes, the Millstonewill deck your opponent faster, and if that's your only goal, have at 'er. But, a couple of other things: Codex Shredder is an uncommon (Millstone is rare); it costs half as much to cast and costs nothing to use, which takes pressure off of your mana base, making it easier to use with effects that place cards on top of the library; and a colourless, non-counterable, and instant speed regrowth effect.

Works well in EDH where it has a nice extended period of time to do some long term milling, and can grab up that valuable card that just went to your graveyard.
But another fun use of this card is messing with miracle decks that like using library manipulation like scroll rack and sensei's divining top.

It's entirely useless in any format other than EDH and maybe limited. But that's enough to give this the thumbs up to be printed, and it will find some uses.

@majinara: While Glimpse the Unthinkable is no doubt better in the milling department this is colorless and so available to anyone. Furthermore this is uncommon while Glimpse the Unthinkable is rare and even then colored cards often have more power than colorless ones (due to the nature of being available to all colors) and that is even multicolored; increasing its power a bit more.
And then last; it may return a card from your graveyard to your hand. I know Rise From The Grave puts a creature directly to play, but who says we want a creature? What about a Planeswalker? Or an anything-else-for-that-matter?

10 times better than Ghoulcaller's Bell. Helps our cause greatly. Must inform the Master.

not bad, truth be told. the cheap cost, and the choice to get back a creature is pretty good, and the free mill isn't half bad either.
This actually has an hilarious use in modern - I have just copied a deck someone built using this, ghoulcaller's bell and lantern of insight to create a top deck control lock. Basically, the lantern lets you always see your opponents top card. Any time it is a threat (i.e. a non-land card, or anything that can damage you), you make them put it into the graveyard, leaving them with an endless mana flood and a hand full of support cards with nothing to support. I just used it on my brother's soul sisters deck and the rage quit was epic!

I am baffled by how low this is rated. Its a Colorless permanent for 4 extra. Now from a glance, I can understand why that might seem horrible (obviously) but the people who rated this card clearly aren't looking at the bigger picture: artifacts have the most reanimator potential next to creatures. Take Arcbound Reclaimer, Auriok Salvagers, and Salvaging Station as examples.
And in a world where "artifacts matter" it doesn't hurt to have around to trigger metalcraft, , and the like.
The fact that you can use this over the long haul, to strategically "ping" your opponents top card to counter tutors of that sort, not to mention any of your own shenanigans, is not testament to the wonders this card offer.
This card is quite underestimated, especially now with all the scry in theros, will make them think twice as more likely than not they're gonna be losing the card if on top their library.

What makes this card is the fact that its first effect doesn't cost any mana. If your opponent has top deck strategies this thing is always reading. You can tap out as much as you want and the codex is still a threat.
If your opponent doesn't use top deck strategies it happily mills once a turn without taking any of your resources.
