Just like HuntingDrake said, this card looks like a leftover from Planar Chaos.

Ophidian with evasion? Oh yes!
5 cmc? Oh no.

Yeah, had this guy at the pre-release, and frequently top-decked him. Playing him as a 0/0 isn't really an option, and when the card you draw next turn is something you want to play too, he just sits in your hand doing nothing. Not as good as you might think.

Storm ghost, huh? So does that make this thing a rider on the storm? Or ghost riders in the sky?

I've recently taken to calling this ability drawlink.

Compare with Overbeing of Myth for the same CMC. Overbeing is less splashable and doesn't fly, but draws you cards every turn no matter what, while this must deal damage.

Toss a few Mind Unbound in with him and he can get pretty potent. Steep cost though, so keep a plethora of counterspells in your deck to ensure his timely arrival, even moreso if you get the aforementioned enchanted out early. Deranged Assistant combos with them nice to get them out a bit faster.

can someone please explain the WOTC rulings on this card?

Since his */* is in effect all the time, you can fetch him up with a Fierce Empath as long as you have 6 cards in hand. You can also use him for counters on your Mimeoplasm if you have a ton of cards in hand.

If I used something like shattered perception, where I discard all of the cards in my hand then draw that many, does this die?

A bomb in its Intro Pack, which has quite a few cards you'd never want to actually play, but the strategy looks like the punchline of a Storm Crow joke: IslandIslandIslandIslandIslandSturmgeist. ... *start swingin*
With a good opening hand you can throw in the curveball of playing... Think Twice. Or... Desperate Ravings. Whoooooo. But you'll still lose to the and Intro Packs nine times out of ten.
Even if you're lucky enough to open Skaab Ruinator in your 15-card pack that comes with the Intro pack, as I was, getting cards into your 'yard for Ruinator conflicts with holding cards in hand for Sturmgeist. He doesn't even play well with Murder of Crows. FFS.
I may be one of like twelve people who isn't new and yet plays Intro Pack decks regularly, so take it from me -- this is the feature card of what might be the worst Intro Pack deck that Wizards has ever released. It also contains Cellar Door... despite having the fewest creatures of any Intro Pack in the cycle. One time I Cellar Doored into Sturmgeist for a 2/2 Zombie token. By some combination of wild luck, repeat creature bounce, a few more door-zombies, and Ruinator that ate the Sturmgeist, I managed to that match. My opponent remarked that getting itself flushed out the cellar door and devoured was the most help the 'geist had ever given me.
That's how bad this card is. ... Want to buy my copy off me? It's foil...

Works well with Tamiyo, The Moonsage.

@crazycolorz5 Nope, Sturmgeist will stick around because state-based effects (Like having 0 toughness) are only checked when a player would receive priority, and since that doesn't happen while a spell is resolving, he's fine.

Got him to a 10/10 once, pretty awesome. @amnisigenic If possible, you just gotta attack with the geist first and then play your spells second main phase

better than Soramaro 12/2/11
Edit: After trying to include this guy in deck, it's become really hard to see his use without pump cards like ethereal armor or drogskol captain (thinking standard). in mono blue he doesn't pack the wallop 5 mana deserves that late in the game. blue is suppose to move fast and be impulsive, making it rare for.. well, me at least, to hold cards in my hand, especially 2-3 cards to make this better than thieving magpie. Nevertheless, if we're considering standard, there's not a lot of great blue cards for 5cmc. In fact, as of 12/20/12, there's only 31 blue cards with 5 cmc, which is basically a page and a half on gatherer. At that rate, I guess I'll either just play this, maybe substitute it for Soul Seizer with artful dodge for fun, or just find something better with a lower cost.

Play Sturmgeist in standard like a boss, the complete guide.
Turn 1: Draw, play a mountain, Goblin Arsonist, Turn 2: Draw, play a Mountain, Infernal Plunge, Goblin Arsonist again, Infernal Plunge once more. Play Chromatic Lantern x2 (you need to tap one to play the other). Turn 3: Draw, play an Island, Sturmgeist. Goes to graveyard due to having no cards in hand at this point. Laugh about, it concede, and don't build a deck around trying to get this card out as fast as possible since this really doesn't have a spot outside of control decks that refill their hands frequently.

CMC 4 would have been fine. Like this it's rather underpowerd. Still nice design.

I really want to like this card because I like the Dream Vestige from D&D, but I just can't. It isn't the worst card ever, but it's just not good enough to use. Extremely flavorful though, eating the memories and dreams and such of it's victims to become stronger, it's perfect in that aspect.

@Salient: Just because a card doesn't work in a given deck doesn't mean that it's a bad card. Even Black Lotus isn't good in absolutely ALL decks. You could, you know, actually try to build a deck that makes good use of Sturmgeist, maybe?
