God i love WotC for reprinting this guy with this epic picture! The picture from 7th and 8th is from Mark Tedin also, but this one rocks the universe!

I don't know why they ever changed the art in the first place. This was the first ever rare I actually upped and bought. Decent card and fantastic pic. Use with something that untaps it though or you're in for a world of pain! Voltaic Construct or Voltaic Key would be your best bets.

actually i think the other one looks cooler simply because of the strangeness of the machine you know?

No, i don't know. This picture just fits with Phyrexia so much better, The trail of smog and carnage left in its wake as you feel helpless watching it advance towards you.

This is my most favored of all the art in MTG. :D

The 7th edition version was one of my first rares I was really happy to get. Certainly my first rare artifact creature. Man, he was a hammer back in the day. I ran him alongside twiddle and isochron scepter (nobody wanted to trade their voltaic keys...) in a blue control deck as my endgame. Never once had to pay the 8 life.

Time hasn't really been kind to him. Inkwell leviathan is now my preferred artifact creature endgame. He hits nearly as hard BUT never gets blocked what with spreading seas, and the shroud is amazing.

A great card if u have a different card to untap it like voltaic key cuz im pretty sure no one wants to pay 8 life just to use it one time, would have been nice if they included trample.

well... yeah its an 8/8 for 7 with a circumventable ability, but why go so far to circumvent the tap restriction when all you've got is... and 8/8 for 7? I mean, the old cards that tournament spikes love are broken in their hands, but the cards that were once good in casual? This card was only powerful when an 8/8 was something special. If the mana was further lowered, i can see it, but you're on;y saving 1 mana for it's power. 1. I mean, Ill take Doomgape, or Kalonian Behemoth, Khalni Hydra, Liege of the Tangle, Lorthos, the Tidemaker. Yeah these are colored, but, ooh, Platinum Emperion, 8/8 for 7 with drawback? meet 8/8 for 8 with bonus. Ah, supreme exemplar, 10/10 for 7 all you need is an elemental out. The colosus isn't bad, but, eh, meh

This creature, and not Darksteel Colossus, should have been the baseline for Blightsteel Colossus.

From PC's baseline, give BC 8 cost, give it infect, keep its "doesn't untap...needs 3 to block...blah, blah" and then make its untap cost be Phyrexian WhitePhyrexian BluePhyrexian BlackPhyrexian RedPhyrexian Green -- would have been a good homage to an enjoyable creature (rather than a crass insult to one), fair-costed, but still potentially game-ending. Flavorful too.

This card was certainly a game-winner in it's day. People would use Grim Monoliths to power it out faster, and use Voltaic Key to untap it.

Pretty absurd if you use a certain key to wind it up.

People thought they could make fun of Sensor Splicer.

Then he set this guy on them.

Man, every time I listen to a song called Scarecrow by Ministry, I get visions about this giant walking on a battlefield, slow and terrifying...

for random curiosity's sake, who would win---

Phyrexia, or Rainbow Brite? be serious. She IS 'just a little girl', BUT she has the advantage of
"Throwing Rainbows tends to make Evil Thingys die" in kid's stories--- I put her odds at a solid 50:50.
Either the Rainbows work or they don't, and the answer to that question tells you which way the one-sidedness goes. Definitely a one-sided fight though

Any takers?

Paleopaladin: I hate to break it to you, but New Phyrexia was a set that was kind of *meant* to upset and alienate the fans and players...think of it as the "Dark Knight" of MTG. In a fairer world, one where we were re-visiting an Invasion or Time Spiral-like era where the Phyrexians are going down? You might be right. But this time around, we were shown what happens when Phyrexia WINS.

What happens is we feel betrayed, violated, outgunned, and losing feels more like being murdered than dying in honorable combat. SHOULD they make cards like that? Debatable. Certainly when it's the result of unfortunate unforeseen interactions, it's regrettable, or when Development doesn't accurately predict the power level of Titans, that's regrettable too. And, yes, I feel for you that you don't like it. That you think it's unbalanced and overpowered. However, Wizards was fairly clear and open and honest with what they were doing. They sometimes make actual mistakes not predicting the ludicrous combos or whatever. But....Blightsteel Colossus was exactly what it was supposed to be, and they did it EXTREMELY on purpose.

Some Mythic Rare creatures were 'mistakes' that I like it when people argue about.

Blightsteel Colossus was not one of them. It was DESIGNED to make people like you cry. It was SUPPOSED to be a CRASS INSULT to Darksteel Colossus. Everything it was, was by intent. Blightsteel Colossus is to Darksteel Colossus as Uruk-Hai are to Elves: The perfection of the Orc, a twisted, cruel, hateful mockery made to destroy and defile. I feel sorry for you, but Phyrexia *wants* you to feel the way you do, so it can drink your delicious tears. :P Blightsteel was supposed to cause terror and despair and cries of agony.....AND IT SUCCEEDED!

The original Pathrazer of Ulamog. I'd say the Pathrazer is a huge improvement due to the annihilator ability and lack of bloodcosts, but then again this guy is an artifact and gains certain immunities and benefits the pathrazer does not, and artifacts have a lot more support than eldrazi do. The golem creature type update was also just in time for New Phyrexia's golem splicers to turn this guy into an absolute nightmare.
