Great with re animator decks because you can almost be assured that you have something in your graveyard better then theirs.

Almost every reanimator deck should have four.

Of course . . this is from Urza's Saga . .
This card has every right to be the most ridiculous common in the entire universe.
Can this be casted even if the opponent has no creature in the graveyard?
It probably can since it does not target creatures in the graveyard . .

I use a playset of these in my W/B Reanimator with four Bojuka Bog and a Gravestorm to keep the opponent's graveyard empty and get some card advantage. This will more often benefit you than any opponent anyway if you are smart.
However I also suggest keeping a few other reanimation spells on the side such as Unearth or Reanimate for ressurecting creatures if your opponent has something threatening in their graveyard.

My friends, this was a common because in Urza's Saga, most large creatures had second turn drawbacks, such as echo, or having to sacrifice an enchantment during your upkeep, or not untapping. I thinkChild of Gaea was one of the few. In today's environment, though, this card is unbelievably sick. Ridiculous cards with no drawbacks except cost didn't really exist back then. If you had told me about any of the Eldrazi gods back when Urza's was out, I would have been aghast. However, the main reason this is common is because it was printed in Urza's "What Were We Thinking" Saga, a set that has some of the most broken cards of all time, like Yawgmoth's Will, Tolarian Academy, Smokestack, Back to Basics, and Gaea's Cradle.
But yeah. This is a reanimator staple.

Dies to Cremate 0.5/5. But really its a great card but you all already know about the many uses for it so I am not going to bother saying them.

One or two mana reanimate >>>> four mana reanimate. And to think Zombify is (rightfully) considered a bad card to print today, because it's still too fast.

Reanimator decks can be absolutely brutal. This card is one of the reasons why.

This card is the key combo piece of most all old res decks and today it is even more insane due to all the huge freaking creatures there are now. It was a very sad day when Krosan Cloudscraper was overtook. :(

This thing is just as nuts if not more so in Pauper.
Evil card, just use Buried Alive or discard creature cards into your graveyard then cast this for some evil laughter while your opponent wonders how he/she is going to stop you
Reanimator decks are unique, cos almost no other decks will actively pitch creatures into graveyards unless they are doing some sort of combo or running stuff that needs to stay in the graveyard like Anger

back to basics wasn't really that broken. It's a hate card that's used by merfolk sometimes, but that's it. Smokestack wasn't really broken either, it fulfills a niche in stax decks, but no other deck runs it at all.

1. Iona, Shield of Emeria for any mono-color opponent
2. Thraximundar for, um, anyone else

Step One: Discard, via one the babillion outlets, something big such as Twisted Abomination or Ulamog's Crusher.
Step Two: Exhume it.
