Awesome card. Play for free and you only need to tap it to get the mana you want, shame it has to be distroyed...

Hmmm.
My friends want me to use a fixed tornement structure for building my decks.
I've suggested Legacy.
I can then use 4 of these.
This will help the mana ramp of my scariest decks dramatically.
Aren't I nice?

good as a common in weatherlight, but shameful that it is now tauted as "mythic," which it is most certainly not. The card is not free to play simply because you lose it so fast, but that being said, an early petal can sway a game.

@Kryptnyt: Lotus Petal was in Tempest.

And one free mana? Sure!

I also play four of these in most of my casual decks. One free mana is always a great thing early in the game.
Back in the days when Tempest came out, these cards were very, very, very cheap in our local stores and nobody was paying attention to them. I should have hoarded them all back then. Maybe i got a hundred pieces of Lotus Petals today that i can sell for almost 200% of it's original price. Well...

The card is pretty good, and I'm happy to see it's been reprinted. But for gawdsake, a mythic rare ???? O.O
Definitely not a mythic, just an ordinary rare maybe.

I backed you up on the Goblin Lackey Exiled board, Kryptnyt, but I might have to disagree with you here, for two reasons: One, the card isn't really mythic, so much as it is a promo; all the cards in the Vault: Exiled set were given mythic status to set them apart from their normal printing, as (if I remember correctly) Wizards wanted to do something special for these select reprints, aside from giving them their own expansion symbol. And two, this card was chosen for this promo set because of its impact on the game when it was legal in Standard. It may only be a third of its parent's glorious self, but the fact remains that Lotus Petal made many, many decks that much scarier to deal with. At the very worst, it gave you two mana on turn one. That's a complete turn ahead of your opponent, and I have fashioned a deck that wins turn two whenever this is in my hand. My good friend has done the same with his deck, only turn one. It's a supporter card, sure, but because of its history within the game, and the way it can still break a deck in half, gives it the right to be in this mini-set, and thus have its mythic status.

Great card. Even without the Moxes and Black Lotus, combine this with more common mana accelerators like Sol Ring, Elvish Spirit Guide and Mana Vault. With the right hand, you could cast something for 6 mana on the first turn ! I'm lucky to have started playing during Revised and managed to get about 5 or 6 of these from Tempest packs.

Aaron’s Random Card Comment of the Day #51, 1/4/11

As a designer/developer, I find it fun to poke the bear. By that I mean revisit some generally-accepted taboo and try to make a version that is printable and fun. If “draw-sevens” are considered unprintable, I want to make one. If random discard is considered out of bounds, I want to reprint Hypnotic Specter (Hymn to Tourach was the real problem).

Other people that worked here prior to me must have enjoyed the forbidden fruit as well, as can be seen on Lotus Petal, originally printed in Tempest.

It was common there, probably considered cute and/or weak by the development teams of that era. Yet here we are, a dozen years later, and Lotus Petal is on the Vintage Restricted List and we’re commemorating its power by including it in From the Vault.

I can see why they thought this card was safe to print. Yes, Black Lotus is insanely powerful, but Elvish Spirit Guide--a one-shot free additional mana card--was merely good. In most games it is not worth throwing away a card for a single free mana once; you’ll get your Soltari Priest out a turn earlier, but it will still die at some point and you’ll be down a card. Even Black Lotus and Dark Ritual wouldn’t be all that powerful if all they were doing was summoning large creatures early and were counteracted by something as simple as an Unsummon.

Of course, when you want to print a card like Lotus Petal, you only get so far testing it with other cards in the set its in; you have to consider cards you might print in the future. And believe me, I don’t think anyone predicted the horrors that Urza’s Saga would hold. Cards like Tolarian Academy, Time Spiral, and Yawgmoth's Will broke Lotus Petal wide open, and the card was banned from Standard in early 1999. Fast mana tends to combine well with card drawing and more fast mana. Who knew?

I remember Pat Chapin commenting on that banning back in ‘99: “Now all those kids using Lotus Petal to power out White Knight on turn 1 get to say, ‘See? I told you it was a good card.’” That’s why I hate having to ban cards in Standard.

In general, I don’t think printing cards like Lotus Petal is a good idea; they either end up unplayable or broken, with little middle ground. Yes, players get all excited about them because they reference famous other cards, but then they’re either let-downs or mistakes. They’re never “reasonable.” That said, they do carry a lot of nostalgic weight, and I have heard Lotus Petal mentioned recently as a possible Core Set card at some point in the future. We’d have to be really sure things around it were totally safe, but I guess it isn’t out of the question.

it's funny because they tried to fix black lotus, and it's still exiled...

And no one complain about it not being as good as black lotus, the power nine aren't "good" they're "mistakes"

i dont see whats so good about this card its only a third of black lutus power (Now if this came with a cantrip abilty it woud be UBER-powerd) but its card disadvatege for 1 free mana of any color once posibly good in a burn deck or a mana exel (as those normaly start going turn 3 this puts it a turn a head) i just dont like it that much
EDIT: ha i was abbot to respond to myself wehn i saw this old commet! shows how much iv come as a player, anyways this card while to ppowerfull in istelf can speed you up a turn, or do wacky storm combos ( i built a 15k deck around that idea on tappped out.net in case anyone wants to see it heres a link http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/storms-of-death/ ) not broken persay nor that big of a deal to play but its usefull

Mr. Forsythe,

I would like to point out that some of these "poke the bear" cards do come out reasonable without being let downs. I would consider Gilded Lotus, Mox Opal, Ancestral Visions, Lotus Bloom, and Time Warp are all examples of throwbacks which are at once exciting, powerful, and pretty balanced. Chrome Mox really pushes the envelope but still seems fair enough all things considered.

I think all people like a well-designed throwback, and as a huge huge huge fan of Time Spiral from a design, creative, limited, and constructed stand point, I love throwbacks. Never stop doing 'em!

For all the comments saying how it was 3X worse that black lotus and how there are so few cards that give 0CMC mana ramp, just look at the power 9: Black Lotus which is 0 CMC mana ramp, Mox Ruby, Mox Emerald, Mox Pearl, Mox Jet and Mox Sapphire which are all 0 CMC mana ramp. What are thought of as almost the nine most powerful cards in the game, 6 of are 0 CMC mana ramp.

on a final note, all the moxes give one mana of a specific colour each turn, Lotus Petal gives one mana of any colour for one turn, if you're playing a combo deck that wins on turn one, you don't care about that.

@ Aaron:
Lotus Pedal was never broken, but it enables other broken cards and makes them even more broken. Tolarian Academy for example was a sure hit and I wonder why NO designer was able to stop this sillyness before it happens.

To make the Lotus Pedal safe, it should enter the battlefield tapped. Most problems fixed, since it can fix your mana, but it can't be used to cast a Flash on turn 1.

It is only a third of Black Lotus' power.

Black lotus was about 6 times too powerful.

There are virtually no 0 CMC mana accelerators. This is for good reason, it's because it breaks the entire structure of the game. There are only so many things you can do on the first turn, and most of them cost 0 or 1 mana.
With one or two of these in your starter hand, it's like you skipped the first turn of the game, while your opponent didn't.

Burn decks would be helped, but it also helps to play a 2/2 with haste and vigilance on the first turn, preventing your opponent form doing anything useful on the first or second turn.

Again, it just speeds you up relative to your opponent, and you can spend your extra time and mana gaining card advantage.

This is only broken when thrown into a deck with broken cards.

Throw it into any Joe Blows deck... and its a 2 for 1 magnet. Same story with big daddy Black Lotus... true story.

Examples:
T1 Mountain
T1 Plains + This + White Knight (((Shock)))

T1 Island
T1 Swamp + Black Lotus + Hypnotic Specter + Unholy Strength ((Unsummon))

On magic tactics, I like seeing opponents drop Black Lotus, immediately thinking 2 for 1 time... True Story.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
This is not nearly as powerful as so many people here are posting. I don't know why this is banned. There are so many mana accelerators in the game for green, this allows any color to use it and only once for 1 mana..... Llanowar Elves or Birds of Paradise are more powerful than this.... Dropping them on turn one and it's the exact same effect as dropping this on ANY other turn... You're 1 mana up... Except with elves or birds you can still tap for mana every turn after or attack! Lotus Petal is crap compared to those mana accelerators... You're going to draw this in your opening hand less than half the time anyhow....

And the art totally sucks...

@Zylo- Look in the upper right corner of this card. See that little zero? That makes mana accel for ZERO mana. Even if it's just one mana, it can make a huge difference. AND it's an artifact, so for zero you've got your Tolarian Academy producing mana.

This card would be too powerful even if it cost 1.

Barbed Sextant costs 2 and has the same feature, plus "Draw a card at the beginning of the next turn's upkeep." which is available in plenty of 1 cards that *all* have some other bonus in addition to that effect.

So, even if this would cost 1 instead of 0, I could do the following combo:

Lotus Petal + Act of Treason to take control of your best creature and attack you with it + Telim'Tor's Edict to exile your creature from the game, and I get to draw an extra card at the beginning of the next turn.

So the exile effect, gaining 1 mana of whatever color I want, and drawing an extra card at the beginning of the next turn, all for 1 + Red = 2 CMC.

Or, I could play a Barbed Sextant for 2 and I don't get to exile my opponent's card. Every color has at least one 1 CMC card that can allow me to draw an additional card at the upkeep of the next turn plus some other beneficial effect.

In my opinion even if Lotus Petal had cost 1, it would still be overpowered, or at least strictly better than other cards of similar cost and with similar effects.

At 0, it's just stupidly overpowered. I can essentially cast my Telim'Tor's Edict for free in the above combo example just by sacrificing the Lotus Petal. Basically, for 3 CMC, I can take control of your most powerful creature, attack you with it, and then exile it. Yes, please.

I think they should bring this back as rare and black lotus as a mythic... in the same set! maby also lotus vale as a rare or mythic. And IF needed (doubt it but wouldn't mind it, because it looks cool) lotus guardian in the same set... it should be common or possibly(i said POSSIBLY!!!) an uncommon.

I think it would be a really fun set. (Hopefully M15!!!)

Funny, I remember when this card first came out, and I thought it was amazing. not only did I see the playability in it, I saw the art, and loved it instantly. But I also remember that during the time that Ursa saga was releasing no one saw the potential in this card. I just keepped laughing (to my self mostly) that none in that era of magic would for see how powerful this would become. Kinda funny seeing the difference of today's magic from what it was like back in mirage/tempest/ursa's day... just look it's now coming back in 20 years vault set...And to think most ppl back in tempest wouldn't even give that card the time of day!
