should have traded this card away back when it was maybe worth something....

Terrible. Fatties shouldn't have tap abilities like this; you should never have to be torn between generating mana or swinging with a creature that obviously wants to swing.
Tap for more than one mana, and we might have something.

I run four of these to accelerate my Storm Crow deck.

Put it in your dragonstorm deck so that you don't win right away if you don't feel like ending the game.

I actually enjoy this card with my Urza lands, turn 3 4/4, so he isn't too easy to burn to death, an he fixes my need for color mana. Not the best, but it's mana fixer and a sturdy blocker for a turn 3 drop.

No wonder so many people are grabbing lotuses from the field.

Pros: Colorless, flies Cons: Embarrassment to the lotus heritage, Low P/T for mana, Ability doesn't match the rest of the card, Took up a rare slot
Even green doesn't want to pay 7 for a 4/4 flier (speaking of green look at that activated ability).

Well... at least it's flavorful? The idea of some adventurers finding a fabled field of Black Lotuses only to be charred as a giant dragon swoops down on them is kinda cool, actually.

You could tap for 1 mana or not lose the game....

Should have +2/+2 and tap for 3 mana of any color. That'd be worth 7 mana.

Well, if you want something to dump into your graveyard as part of an infinite 5-colored mana combo with Necrotic Ooze, and for some reason you want it to be a 7 CMC 4/4 flier instead of an accelerator that actually accelerates, you have found a candidate for the job.
And people give my man Flowstone Thopter a hard time. THIS WAS IT'S COMPETITION!

Wanna make this good?
Make it tap for two mana of any color, make it a 5/6, and give it vigilance so you can tap PCM or after declaring it as a blocker.

Look at gilded lotus. This should have tapped for 3 mana of one color and had vigilance + haste. It is a Lotus Dragon for petes sake!

He's a bit underwhelming, yes, but he's more for show than anything. Lotuses are already thoroughly protected by their price tags.
In all seriousness, though, yes - I think he should be able to tap for three coloured mana, considering what lotuses do. Vigilance would also be good spider-sense, but not necessary.

Bah, I wonder what they were thinking with this one? It's not just poorly developed- it's bad design. Who wants to tap their 4/4 flyings for mana? If it tapped for like, 4 mana of any combination of colors, at least you'd have the choice of flying in 4 damage or getting a huge chunk of mana, but as is, it's just junk.
Art and flavor is cool, though.

This was in-cycle during the time I played at local tournaments as a kid; I remember having one in my deck just because I liked the artwork.
Normally he'd just be an overcosted flyer, but during a close game once, I managed to get this thing out while my opponent had an Iridescent Angel on the field. Thinking he had protection from everything, he attacked, then just looked at the board, dumbfounded as I blocked with Lotus Guardian before smacking himself on the forehead. Went on to win the game because of that.
Probably my best Magic memory.

looks cool. should be able to tap for 3... wait then it would have to sack.l the other old lotus cards sack for three. see black lotus
if i think about it it would be OK if it was uncommon it be OK. i remember seeing an uncommon 4/4 flyer for 6 mana in meroden besieged. it was a gargoyle. all this is doing is one more mana for an ability that gets you mana. do not know why its a rare. it should be uncommon or common("If" they remake it it better be common, or maby, possibly uncommon!).
