Right now the only playably deck that can use this guy would be one that utilizes together the other M10 vampires and Chameleon Colossus. Of course such a deck would need Twilight Mire but it could also use Maelstrom Pulse and Garruk Wildspeaker for extra strength. Hopefully by october when Zendikar comes out there will be a few new vampires to justify a vampire tribal deck.

a lot better than most people are giving it credit for. He lets you play with the top card of your deck revealed and he gets +2/+1 and flying almost all the time in a mono black deck all for 4 mana. And this guy definitly makes child of the night vicious

The Prerelease card has so much better art. Raymond Swanland's pictures all look the same ... boring. As for the Nocturnus, he's powerful, but not very reliable. There are too few vampires to build a solid deck around, and even if you do you'll end up with a Swamp on top of your library a lot of times. I'm thinking of using Painter's Servant though...

This card does have some draw backs, but I run a monoblack and do not seem to have much problems with it. If you run into a nonblack card on top of your library then cards like Diabolic Tutor and Ad Nauseam can change that. I find it much easier to run a Vampire decck with 12 Vampires and a few other creatures to keep it rough for the opponent. Also, if you are tired of being hit with spells left and right then Nocturnus is a great enough creature to take the heat for you. :)

Yep expect vampire tribal decks to be popping up all over the place. This guy is the bread and butter for a freaking vamp deck. Aside from a few mana activated abilities that are red activated most vampire decks will be mono black. Great art. Great card. 5/5

Works awesomely well in conjuction with Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet. Convert your opponents creatures into black vampire creatures, then watch them get the +2/+1 and flying buff (given that you're almost certainly running a monoblack deck). Very very nice. ^^

This card is awesome combined with the new stuff from Zendikar, it's almost unfair. But, if you go black you need this guy and some vampires. Get two out for +4/+2 and flying and what your opponent cry. Also his abilities help you slay that overpowered Baneslayer Angel.

My friend got a playset before Zendikar, and now he's going Turn 1 Vamp Lacerator, 2 Blade of the Bloodchief equip swing, 3 Gatekeeper of Malakir kill something pump lacerator swing 4 nearly always a devastating Vampire Nocturnus. If only I could forsee the power of cards and get 'em while they're cheap...but I guess I should have seen this coming, I mean, Wizards wouldn't just print a Vamp lord for no reason...

Theres no getting away from it if you want your vampire deck to be any good you need this guy. $18 a pop. i don't have any. Vampires need more stuff because all vampire decks look the bloody same. Why would i pay $18 * 4 just to have a vampire deck thats almost the exact same vampire deck everyone else has.
I feel a good tribe in magic needs to allow for the freedom and fun of having options vampires don't have many at all hence i think they suck - at least until there is a wider pool of options.
To make a good deck I like to use my imagination, not my wallet.

But at the same time, hes not in every other tourny deck like BS-layer Angel and Lightning bLOLt....but those 2 stayed in M11.

This guy is even more amazing with Necropotence. His ability lets you see each card before you pull it off the top of your library, and Necropotence lets you make sure you keep a black card on top to buff your vampires. Swamp on top? Pull it off! Need your kill card? Keep milling until you see it.

question: IDK if someone asked this or not but i couldnt find anyone asking. so my friend plays Vemp deck with four of these bad boys in it. he played one and he flipped over the top card of his deck and it was a black card. so well all though that all of his vemps gets the buff but one of the guy (we were playing FFA) said that "he doesn't do that ability (play with the top of your library revealed and blah blah blah) untill next turn" and then I go on to say. then it would of said "play with the top of your library revealed each up keep if the revealed card is black then it gets the buffs" or somthing like that. well he said that someone played that card on the online game and it didnt give the buffs to the other vemps although the revealed card was black.
sooooooo what is the correct way? play this card and then the ability happens or it happens at the upkeep?

no one mentioned this.... Sensei's Divining Top .... my friend run a vamp deck with 3-4 of each (this and the top) maybe once every 10 times or so the top will only yeild lands/artifacts and a small victory is had, other than that its pretty much GG.
@epitomeofevilness... they Stack, all your vamps (including BOTH Noctournus') get plus +4/+2 and flying, same thing if you have 3 or 4 or 10 out at once. having said that only the 1 card of deck will be reveled no matter how many you have.

I personally don't understand this card. He seems really good, but I guess I just don't know how to play him. I got one in a m10 booster and thought he was cool so I tried playing with him, but he never seemed to help much. Besides the fact that I only had one, he was hard to find, was always being killed by other cards and my poor little vampires would always get trampled over. Also he used to run risky for me. Since he always revealed the top card of my deck, my friends would always smile because they would have an answer to the revealed card by the next turn. Now my poor little Vampire Nocturnus just sits in my fancy card binder looking all bad ass with no calling for him to be played in any of my decks. He's actually gotten me killed very often when I have tried playing him.

As much as I love the flavor behind this card's mechanic, I feel it would be better served as an enchantment that goes off every other turn. As is, Vampire Nocturnus usually either ends games too quickly to create any tension or dread, gets bolted as soon as he enters play, or gets killed or bounced midcombat, exposing the attacking vamps to the opponent's blockers. As the cornerstone of the Vampire strategy, it'd be nice to have a card that wasn't so swingy and unpredictable.

Amazing, game changing, vital in every vampire deck, totally overpowered and underpriced (mana-wise).
For the record if at any time the revealed card is black, then those creatures have +2/+1 and flying. e.g. Let's say your opponent has a Memory Erosion in play, your draw step rolls around and the newly revealed card is a land (your creatures do not have +2/+1 and flying). Then you play a spell and the top two cards from your library are put into your graveyard, now the NEW revealed card on top of your library might be a black creature, suddenly all your creatures have +2/+1 and flying.
There's also an important condition in the oracle rulings that say if you have to draw cards from your library, you have to reveal each one before you draw it. This means your creatures might alternate between two different states multiple times, and could potentially be affected by active enchantments that affect creatures without flying.

I feel a good tribe in magic needs to allow for the freedom and fun of having options vampires don't have many at all hence i think they suck - at least until there is a wider pool of options.
To make a good deck I like to use my imagination, not my wallet.
Maybe later he can return as a legendary 2BBB and with equally awesome art (hopefully).
But at the same time, hes not in every other tourny deck like BS-layer Angel and Lightning bLOLt....but those 2 stayed in M11.
And yes, the new M11 vampire lord makes me cry at night.
This guy is basically: 4 cmc deal 12 damage to target player (if you have captivating vampire make it 14)
That's how a lot of tribal decks are.
Honestly though, vampires in particular are guilty of this because they're the new kids on the block.
Give them a couple of blocks to become a legitimate tribe, and you'll start to see some variety in the vampire decks.

@epitomeofevilness... they Stack, all your vamps (including BOTH Noctournus') get plus +4/+2 and flying, same thing if you have 3 or 4 or 10 out at once. having said that only the 1 card of deck will be reveled no matter how many you have.
Now my poor little Vampire Nocturnus just sits in my fancy card binder looking all bad ass with no calling for him to be played in any of my decks. He's actually gotten me killed very often when I have tried playing him.
For the record if at any time the revealed card is black, then those creatures have +2/+1 and flying.
e.g. Let's say your opponent has a Memory Erosion in play, your draw step rolls around and the newly revealed card is a land (your creatures do not have +2/+1 and flying). Then you play a spell and the top two cards from your library are put into your graveyard, now the NEW revealed card on top of your library might be a black creature, suddenly all your creatures have +2/+1 and flying.
There's also an important condition in the oracle rulings that say if you have to draw cards from your library, you have to reveal each one before you draw it. This means your creatures might alternate between two different states multiple times, and could potentially be affected by active enchantments that affect creatures without flying.
This card wins games I remember winning one where my friend had shuffled his deck (for some card related reason) and I got to cut it. If it was black 60% I was dead, and if it was a swamp 40% I would win. My heart pounded while I chose my fate and I got the swamp he exclaimed so loud! haha
This card gets a 5/5 but it needs flavor and I don't get it perhaps when the future is black vampires will rule the skys?
