I took this card over Behemoth Sledge in draft at pre-release, and won the draft with it over the guy who was on my left, who took the new Warhammer with many comments to me about why I had made the wrong pick. This card is awesome. So are all (or most) of the new equipments in Alara Reborn.

Sledge v Mage Slayer... Man, I HOPE I have to make that choice in the near future. I'd be happy to have either. This card is going straight into my Exalted/Reckless Ogre deck.

Could this be a reference to the reccuring dagger-type weapon "Mage Masher" from the Final Fantasy series? I wouldn't be surprised!

I played in the Launch Sealed with this guy, and he was positively deadly. Lost to the guy with the Behemoth Sledge, but man, it was a close game.

Perfect way to deal instant damage, and perfect with fatties like Kresh (give the sword back to the guy whose quote is on Mage Slayer!)

I am actually thinking about making this and Kresh the Bloodbraided as part of my strategy in a spectrum deck I'm trying to work on. I'm going to maybe work 3 of each and 3 Malfegor and 2 Thraximundar. I'm thinking if you can use Malfegor to boost either Kresh or Thraximundar and give them a Mage Slayer, then you don't have to worry at all about them being chump blocked to deal their dmg.

Kresh can get potentially alot bigger than Thraximundar after using Malfegor, though Kresh doesn't have haste and could get killed by the time summoning sickness wears off, where the other can swing immediately after, so either one could be a great threat. I'll try to run multiple copies of each so that it'd take multiple players or alot of removal from one opponent just to stop the combo from working out. Even if they did stop it, Malfegor had already wiped out most or all of their creatures anyway, clearing the way for other attacks.

The best part about this card is that it lets you deal damage to a player with a fat creature that doesn't have the evasions to land the hit on its own. Awesome creatures like Plated Slagwurm and Gloryscale Viashino just made a new best friend.

It might actually work well with Heartlash Cinder, too. I always thought he was cool, but he isn't big enough early-game when he can actually hit. The Mage Slayer just might make him effective late game, too. Oh, and if someone wants to try out Heartlash Cinder with Impelled Giant, let me know how that turns out.

Puting this on a Meglonoth is also a good combo, as it allows you to attack your opponent for 6 unblockable damage, then also hit them with the decision to take another 6 or throw a few creatures in front of the trampleing monstrocity. While also keeping the creature to block with, giving you the ability to deal another six damage if your opponent is foolish. If you could give the Meglonoth double strike or unblockability, or both I guess, then ouch.

Awesome piece of equipment. All you have to do is turn something sideways and you're dealing damage to the opponent's face. I love this card!

Edit: Deus of Calamity. I mean, DAMN!

This goes great with Whispersilk Cloak, since you basically get an unblockable creature that deals double damage to your opponent and has Shroud.

I put this on a Woolly Thoctar, attacked, and at the end of turn, used Brion Stoutarm to sacrifice the Thoctar, doing 15 damage and gaining me 5 life. It's a great card for behemoths even w/o any additional aids and pairs really well with other equipment from the set.

This plus Apocalypse Hydra wins games, and is my favorite combo at the moment.

The potential to abuse this thing is amazing. It turns all of your creatures into direct damage threats in the later game, even if they are chump blocked, destroyed, etc. Equip, swing, win.

This would go great in Extended Infect. You'd have those poison counters at 10 in no time.

This with infect could be pretty good, especially with allot of other cards out their that easily boost creatures power

Equipped creature has super first strike: it deals combat damage before the combat damage step.

All jokes aside, this card is brutal. The only problem is the casting cost - red/green has a lot of other great cards with the same casting cost (Boggart Ram-Gang being one of them), so I'm often at a loss when it comes to choosing which one of cast :/
On the bright side, you can cascade into this with Bloodbraid Elf.

The obvious combo is this with Deus of Calamity, but really, you could slap it onto any creature you like and watch you opponent's life total plummet. Perfect for the R/G player in all of us.

I remember I had a naya beatdown deck. Put this on a doublestrike creature, effectively triple strike.

So, I have a question, that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere else. During one of my games, I had a 20/23 (or some such power... it was at least 20) Forgotten Ancient. I had equipped him with Mage Slayer and declared him as an attacker. The opponent I was attacking had 20 life, and responded by using Unsummon on my creature.

The game consisted of multiple players, and I'm 100% positive that he would not have used Unsummon if I had attacked another player. So, since the Unsummon was a response to me attacking, would Mage Slayer's effect have triggered (since the creature was attacking) therefore killing my opponent before Unsummon resolved?

I didn't really think about it at the time, so we just went with the fact that my creature was unsummoned, and therefore did no damage. But when I was reading about how the ability triggers during the declare attackers step, I wondered if I would've taken out that player.

Anyway, thanks for your help and responses. :)

@smb379: I think that the Mage Slayer would look for the Last Known Information, since the ability is looking for a creature that has left its expected zone, the same reason that Mogg Fanatic can deal damage after it's sacrificed. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
