it's actuall main combo involves the master transmuter, who can bring him out of your hand for just one blue mana. with effects like that, who cares what the cost is though lol

Honestly my favorite leviathan. No huge drawbacks.

Great when you're putting him into play with Master Transmuter, pretty bad any other time. I lost a game once because I thought he had flying and ended up not able to block my opponent's final blow. So I'll always have a bit of a grudge against this card for that reason. XD

Wonderful Tinker target. Probably better than the big man, at least right now.

I can't believe this guys isn't mythic rare- only nine mana for a 7/11 creature with no real drawback.

For those of us who don't utilize his Artifact status, he's still a good heavy hitter. I got my first out of a starter deck, and I've used him ever since. You can't beat a natural 11 meat shield!

@bagilis: Hello?? It has friggin' SHROUD. And that makes this card a wonderfully playable fatty. I'd gladly run him over Darksteel Colossus in a Tinker deck, anytime. Just try and kill him. It's really, REALLY hard. 5/5

I just opened two conflux boosters and this guy occupied both rare slots. It's destiny. I also have a couple of simic sky swallowers. Leviathan deck, go!

Anyway, good luck killing this thing. I'm sure people have mentioned master transmuter already.

I believe they messed up on this card. I bet he was meant to have "this creature can only attack if target player controls an island" instead of islandwalk.

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (2 votes)
An absolute gamewinner if your opponent controls an island, or has had one of their lands turned into an island (*cough* SPREADING SEAS *cough*). Trample is certainly good, but unblockable is better.

Actually won the game for my artifact deck in a tight one against a blue mill/control deck. Opponent Rite of Replicate'd (with kicker) my Sphinx of the Steel Wind, meaning that if I couldn't finish him off next turn I was in for a difficult fight (he was on 8 health, I was still on about 12 but did have an army of thopters to chump block with and a Filigree Angel sitting somewhere in my deck). Transmute out my Eldrazi and watch his face as he can't do anything to stop ol' Inky swim through his islands and slap him in the face.

I like it, I don't love it, but I like it. These days everything practically needs shroud.. spells being so crazy and all, for 3 mana basically any spell can kill any permanent between unmake, malestrom pulse, path to exile, terminate, all the shard charms, and putrefy. Anyways, it's still not unkillable, one winged coatl would do it in, but it's about as good as you're going to get in terms of a giant shrouded creature. Only thing better than it in this set would be uril with a runes of the deus attached.

@Donovan_Fabian
Seeing as Winged Coatl needs blue, theres a good chance anyone playing it would have an island anyway, so this guy would be unblockable by coatl

i have put out inkwell leviathan, and then used rite of replication with the kicker on the next turn. 6x 7/11 islandwalk, trample, shrouds on the table = game over.

It's the Giant Licorice Monster!!! This dude is heavy, but for 2 less mana, you could throw out a 8/7 Goliath Sphinx with flying instead. Flying is superior to trample in my opinion (trample almost always runs into a blocker). Your Goliath can take down a Baneslayer and deal 8 damage a turn to your opponent compared to the 4 or 3 damage your Inkwell is probably going to cause. And good night, you're playing blue, so you should be able to counter your opponent's removal attempts on your Goliath. Don't overpay for the "removal insurance" on the Inkwell!

While I like Darksteel more, Inkwell does make a very good replacement for him.
Spideredd
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
It really is this or the Darksteel Colossus.
Tough choice.
The Iron man has Indestrucability, but that only causes him to be Path of Exiled, or Oblivion Ringed. This guy has a soild toughness, and can't be the target of spells or abilities and has an evasion ability to boot, if you use Convincing Mirage.
Real tough choice.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@robbinhood Goliath sphinx is a good card to play but the luck of any kind of protection is really important if you play against serious constructed decks. If you play a sphinx for 7 mana and you dont have 2 spare lands for a counter you will probably end up with a removed from the game sphinx with 7 mana tapped for nothing before your turn is over... So you actually need to have 9 mana for the sphinx, thats why Inkwell is a much much better deal, the fact that it has overshadowed darksteel colossus , a heavy played card in many artifact decks proves leviathan's value in play.

@bpmbrent you cant target a creature with shroud so rite of replication won't work

This thing is awesome. Shroud and trample are devastating but if your opponent plays blue (or if you make one of his or her lands an Island) he or she is in for trouble. Pricey card but its well worth the investment.

I have a question if somebody could help that would be great if your playing two-headed giant and you attack with the leviathan, and just one of the other opponents has islandwalk can the other player block for him?
bagilis
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
True Mumin, that's right, I missed the shroud.
Zaneshift
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
I imprint this on Summoner's Eggs then Pongify the egg. A 7/11 with trample and shroud is just plain evil, even without a quick-play combo. Eleven toughness! That's just insane! Islandwalk might not be the best unblockable sort of ability, but it's hardly that much of a problem since you're not going to get him killed unless your opponent has 11 damage lined up for their attackers (which is nice if you lure them into blocking then bounce/tap enough creatures to keep the leviathan alive). I've yet to see a game that I can't win after playing Inkwell Leviathan. He simply isn't going down when you're running control (and your opponent wastes a massive amount of resources in the process). He's not the most damaging giant creature, but he doesn't need to be.

I love how the reduced cost on this guy for being an artifact is massively, massively offset by the fact that you can't target him. What's more, why would you need to target him? Well I suppose if you're not the one controlling him and you're about to get a faceful of waterey death....

Awesome by himself, yet combos well with quite a few cards. Even if you can't give him an Island to work with, you have Trample to tear through nearly anything.

Also, the art reminds me of a specific Calvin and Hobbes strip with Calvin imagining a rather unfortunate Farmer Brown.

Something like shroud is just one of the most important things for your finishers if they aren't the really big ones that are likely to kill your opponents in about two hits, especially if they're also artifacts.
You don't get anything from casting an expensive creature if your opponent's removal spell still works just as fine on those and only costs something between one or three mana.

@TheLionsMane: This is the thought process of every guy in a lighthouse from Magic :D
Check out the other Leviathan cards' artworks, they all have them in some way.

The one thing that bugs me about this card:
In what way does that lighthouse-devouring monstrosity resemble an inkwell?

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (2 votes)
This, Stormtide, Kederekt, wow. Leviathans rock nowadays. Everyone who was alive for the Ice Age expansion reads over this card twenty times looking for the crippling Krakenesque drawback. If they haven't played for a while, you could tell them that "shroud" means "this card cannot attack unless you control a number of islands exactly equal to its power" and they'd believe you.

Delightfully weird that it's an artifact creature. Who built it?

One of the most dangerous huge creatures ever printed. Difficult to kill, hard to block, and open to abuse because of its artifact status. Epic artwork that reminds us all why "lighthouse keeper" is such a bad career choice in the Magic world.

I keep a straight face at all times while playing Magic but if I ever had a WTF expression, it was when I first saw this navy guy. I was on my way to a slow victory when my opponent pulled it out. Abandoning all protocol, I asked him to hold on for a moment, picked up the card from the table and stared in terrified disbelief for a long, long moment at the "shroud, islandwalk". I had no time to recover from the shock. I had an island and I was dead the next turn. Can't be rated high enough vs blue.

Ink = shroud. Find more card with "ink" in the name. Could also mean Phyrexian Oil, which would make since of the artificial-ness of this bad boy (or girl? I've had girlfriends that seem to WALK all over people that couldn't be "targeted"). Alara doesn't really seem to make since when you consider the whole phyrexia thing...except noting that Karn visited many planes and, as the story goes, tainted each of them with the phyrexian oil contained within him. The lighthouse is in every leviathan art, because of historical reminiscence & to show SCALE of the massive size.

@RJ.693 According to the Planeswalker's guide to Alara the 'Inkwell' is a pitch-black sea in Esper, so it's not the Leviathan, but where it inhabits.

Name aside, this card makes me grateful for guys like Vedalken Engineer who can give you some colour fixing in Esper artifact ramp.
