How much would it suck to discard the card you grabbed? I guess lots? 3.5 for being hazardous.

It's best when used for grabbing things you want or don't mind having in the graveyard. For instance, Life from the Loam. It's put to great use in the legacy deck Land.dec.

This card's name speaks for itself.

And in case you have some graveyard-based cards it might even be advantageous for them to get discarded.
(Cards with Flashback, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge or Bridge from Below, for instance)
Got an empty hand and drew a Gamble? Entomb your card of choice :D

Oh no, I just discarded a card in my reanimator...whatever will I do? PLAY it in the the RIGHT kind of deck. You do not play this in a combo piece that DOESN'T involve playing stuff from your graveyard.

A first turn Demonic Tutor in red, yeah you might lose your card but you'll only have a 1 in 6 chance of losing your chosen card, 1 in 7 if you drew first. Not great, but mono-red hand fixing equals amazing power. Even if using it is a gamble. ;)

I love how unnecessary the ruling is on this card. "HEY KIDS, IN CASE YOU WEREN'T AWARE, THE CARD'S NAME MEANS SOMETHING!" That's nice.

The best part is you don't have to reveal the card, so many times your opponent won't know if you discarded the card you were looking for.

Look at the oracle text. The "shuffle your library" part doesn't happen until you disacard. So if your discarded card has a triggered effect when it goes to the grumper, than you will have priority while you know exactly how your library is stacked. Quick! Someone break this.

You might end up discarding the card you searched for.

An alternate way to use this (and perhaps the BEST way) would be to run Library of Leng with it. When you discard, you get to choose whether it goes to the graveyard or the top of your library AFTER seeing what it is, so if it's something you'd rather not have it can go in the 'yard, but if it's what you searched for or something you need, it can just go on top. Minimal losses.

Actually, you wouldn't get to "break" gamble by knowing your library.

You see, when the card that gets discarded puts an ability on the stack, the currently-resolving spell MUST FINISH RESOLVING, including the shuffle, before ANYTHING else can resolve.

Otherwise, you could break any tutor that way. Kudos to R&D for making solid rules for the stack that haven't had to be altered (excepting whether or not there IS a stack in combat damage step) since its introduction.

Yet another reason to play Library of Leng.

3.5. Solid red tutor. But low chance of losing your card if it's played early.

Yes, you might discard the card you search for. It's not ironic; it's called Gamble for a reason. It's ot a Vampiric Tutor, but it's still decent. Play this in a deck that uses, say, Terravore.

For Red, this is an insane tutor. It's not a guaranteed thing, but for red, it is pretty darn powerful.

With no cards other than Gamble in hand, you can cast any card from your deck for its madness cost, not necessarily a fantastic interaction, but useful nonetheless. An absolute necessity in {R} EDH decks.

when combined with libray of leng this becomes awesome

this card is hardly a "gamble" when played on turn 1 or 2

A solid card.
At best it's Vampiric Tutor without Instant speed or life loss, with a discard.
At worst it's Entomb at Sorcery Speed.
In reanimator it's almost perfect.

Flashback decks aren't too down about the random discard with a tutor to you hand for 1 mana.

red entomb if you're in hellbent mode
great in R madness
Plus, if you have 4 cards, a 75% chance to get the card you need to win is better than a 1/50 chance by a long shot.

In legacy this is primarily used in the Loam combo, Ichorid, and some Charbelcher

I put this in a Borborygmos Enraged commander deck to tutor up Life from the Loam. Oddly enough, it never seems to fail to get it into my hand.

So it's either random discard for a Demonic Tutor, or an Entomb, and you don't get to decide which. So very, very red.
