If you can ramp into this card (easy considering red now has the best "Mana Ritual" cards), its actually quite good. Play it with Children of Korlis or (better but more colors) Tainted Sigil to get your life back. I'd also run Plague of Vermin in this type of deck. Spend 19 life...your opponent will lose 1/2 + the amount they bid (expect good players to bid only 1 life, if not zero), then get back 24+ life. Korlis stack too.

Used this in my goblin deck for a while. Play it just before you rush them with all your goons, put yourself on one life then watch their smile disappear!

Someone I was playing back in the day didn't read this card all the way through, and hid all the cards in his library, counting each individual card as an object. I hid a pencil. I lost 7 life, they lost 40something. Good times.
Red needs more gambling cards like this, although maybe not so exorbitantly expensive.

@murdershot21: It says in the errata, "When it comes to choice of items, use common sense. Items should be small enough to hide but large enough to count. Make it clear what kind of object you are hiding beforehand. For example, one player may choose coins and the other may choose dice. If you can't find something convenient to hide, write numbers on a piece of paper and reveal the numbers. Make sure the numbers are unambiguous (for example, underline a 6 or 9 so it can't be misread)."
Another interesting piece of errata: "If you attempt to halve a negative life total, you halve 0. This means that the life total stays the same. A life total of -10 would remain -10."
Doesn't seem very relevant, but I guess it could save someone if they played a life gain card as an interrupt. Speaking of which... Based on the wording of this card, you could potentially play instants in response to someone revealing their item.
"I have a penci - "
"SUDDEN DEATH!!!"
"... Why?"
"I just wanted to play in response to a physical action in magic. Just once."

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0)(3 votes)
@TopRomen: No, you couldn't do that. The revealing of the items is part of the spell's resolution, and you can't do things in response to other things while spells resolve.

Combo with Tainted Sigil? Especially if you already have more life than opponent.
Say I'm at 11, and you're at 10. I pick.......10. Oh, you picked 1? Well you drop to 9, then halve to 4. I drop to 1. Then I used Tainted Sigil. I go to 17.
Makes a really fun card, ridiculously deadly, and not too risky, either. Shame the colors are awkward, though...

Play it with Wound Reflection. If you have more life than your opponent you will win. He will not be able to hide more items than half his life. You will hide items equal to half his life +1 making him loose tha Goblin Game thus loosing half of his life (all of it with Wound Reflection).

This card just has no business being in normal magic, I almost find it flat-out offensive. There's fun cards and there's just... what were you thinking? This card should be banned; any card that needs to be described with "use common sense" should be considered a total failure from a design standpoint.

I imagine the "write a number" alternative is more practical in a competitive setting, but the fact that you hide items is the perfect flavor. I'd love to see more cards like this. Can we please get a 7 mana merfolk drinking game?

They need to print more cards like this. Cards that are fun, social, unique, and require skill beyond splurging for Angelic Destiny.

So... Eternal formats can't have chaos orb or ante cards or cards from Un- sets, but they can have this, a card which gives a very vague set of instructions and almost promotes some level of cheating. Still, I love it. Cards like this which have such complexity that entire strategic forums and guides are dedicated to them fascinate me, regardless of how impractical or bizarre said cards may be.

Does the universe count as one object or several? Can I hide the universe? Can I hide a system in which my opponent resides, can I hide the room we're in? These all apply since my opponent doesn't know -what- I'm hiding. I can ask these questions in real magic too. (As in not-Un magic) WOW I love this card.

In short, this card reads: "each player loses a good chunk of life", which is obviously better than damage since it can't be prevented. It also puts players in a lose/lose situation. If they bid too much they have about lost anyway, and if they don't, then they lose even more.
Edit: CpmCrunch, nah, it doesn't break MTGO. The game client simply asks people to pick a number. At least last time I played goblin game on MTGO it worked that well just fine.

Cheatyface only allows you to sneak it into play FROM YOUR HAND. If they notice as soon as they come back from a 5 min search, that counts, and they are exiled.
