Why the low rating? This card rules. Works best when combined with its robotic zombie child, Tidehollow Sculler. Five stars from me.

It's targetted, but this is no Hymn To Tourach.

Not every good card is worth the highest rating.

Nice to play after you made your opponent discard a couple cards that he or she chooses, and then you choose one.

Could be really good or just okay. I'd say Gerrard's Verdict does a better job.

Of course Gerrard's Verdict is better (but we don't have Gerrard's Verdict in Extended) , but it's still a good card.

I too can't see why this isn't more popular- exiling a combo piece for two mana? Sounds good to me.

Compare Distress- for the trouble of that white mana, Castigate stops Darksteel Colossus, Progenitus and the legendary Eldrazi from auto-recurring.

I'm not sure why, but the guy in the front looks like he's saying "Sup Bro!" while he is getting castigated.

Play four of these with four Tidehollow Sculler to have objects rapidly thrown at you.

People seem to overlook the fact that not only does Castigate forces your opponent to REVEAL his/her hand, it also REMOVES the card from the game instead of just discarding it. That means the card of your choice gets no recur, no madness, no shuffle back into library. In addition to all that, you can plan according to their revealed hand.

Gerrard's Verdict is a powerful card as well but your opponent chooses which two to discard and they still has the chance to be retrieved later. Also, you cannot look at their hand.

I don't see how people would consider GV to be strictly better than Castigate.

This slaps Distress senseless. Yeah. You heard me. I'd rather play a {WB} spell turn 2 than a {BB} that isn't Hymn.

@Tezz It is a human but in one of the articles it mentions that they live so long and gluttonously (is that a word) that they turn into mere lumps of gray flesh. I'm surprised this dude can walk by himself, I don't think Teysa's grandfather could...

I used to run four of these in my Orzhov discard, then swapped them out for Tidehollow Sculler. Then they reprinted Duress, which is unfortunately no longer as good as it used to be (with Flashback still in circulation and important creature threats like Snapcaster Mage and Delver of Secrets. So I put Castigate back in, replacing Duress.

Me running my WUB deck:

Me: "Alright, I know Progenitus is in your deck somewhere."
*Cast Extract*
Opponent: *pokerface*

Me: "...It's not anywhere in here. I know you have it! Waaaait.."
*Castigate*

My only complaint is that it wasn't reprinted in Gatecrash.

castiGATE was a perfect candidate for a reprint in GATEcrush... I see a missed opportunity here...

Why would you compare Gerrard's Verdict to this... One is modern and another is legacy. That's like comparing the original Mox cards to the modern Mox's...

They each have their own formats which are vastly different. Would you compare Vampiric Tutor to Diabolic Tutor?

Compare it to another modern card like Thoughtseize for a fair evaluation. That seems to be the gold standard in modern right now... However, for an extra mana, you get to exile a card from the game... and no life loss.. Some decks want cards in the graveyard... and If you're facing a Tron deck and he's holding Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, would you rather have played Thoughtseize or Castigate?

Would you compare Time Warp to Time Walk and say Time Warp sucks?

However...since you are comparing cards from totally different formats.... Let's do it anyhow... Getting to hand pick a card that is exiled is a much more powerful ability than having the opponent choose, picking dead cards or filling their graveyard with goodies.... Not to mention the fact that castigate lets you look at their hand... just getting to look at what your opponent has is a big advantage....

This card is on ChannelFireball's top 8 Orzhov cards list for a reason.

Pretty bada$s flavour text for a modern card! These days the level of writing is more suitable for an episode of NCIS (as in terrible)...

"We have no need for military might. We wield two of the sharpest swords ever forged: Faith in our left hand, Wealth in our right." —Vuliev of the Ghost Council

I can see why they started with faith and ended with wealth.
Although faith in the right hand and wealth in the left hand would have been more fitting I think,
with the sinister hand associated with the dirty money and the dexter hand with the right(eous) and honorful faith.
Although admittedly, I'm not too sure if Orzhov's belief system is just that, but you get my drift.

This card is extremely good. The only thing that keeps it from being the best targeted discard is its higher and more complex mana cost over cards like Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek.

It doesn't seem to me that much needs to be said about it really. Exile is super good, any nonland is super good as well.

About the comparison of this and Gerrard's Verdict, I personally don't think there is much of a contest. This allows you to see your opponent's hand and get EXACTLY what you want, which unless they are at 1 or 2 cards in hand Verdict allows them to decide what to keep.

I think that a lot of Magic players don't understand the power of looking at your opponent's hand; just try and think of it as "intel" for the battle you are in. Knowing what your opponent can and likely will do is extremely powerful, and while that alone isn't really worth a card and 2 mana this card lets you EXILE any nonland card from their hand as well.

4.5/5 and easily one of the best targeted discards in the game.
