This works wonders with Rimebound Dead 'cos it still allows creatures to regenerate! ;-) In that case, with that combination it really makes opponents think twice whether they wanna attack you or not...^^
I used to love this card, even not just regarding flavor. Yet the equip cost always bugged me. But it's pretty much overshadowed these days anyways: Unless you'll encounter creatures with first strike or if you're going to equip a valorous or by other means courageous an hero, i really advise using Basilisk Collar instead.

with an ornithopter you have a 0/2 deathtouch, haha

this is also great for a modular deck.

Just play it with an indestructible creature.

taunting elf, (as said before), then return the elf to your hand before it dies with wirewood symbiote just to get in that last taunt.

When I first saw this, I questioned the flavour. What is it about this hammer that is so self-destructive to the wielder? Is some soldier clinging desperately to his army-issue Dead-Iron Sledge, cowering in his trench in the knowledge that if he actually kills someone, the maul will kill him? Was it crafted as some practical joke, blowing up soldiers as they tried a few practice swings? Then I recalled the perfect flavourful wielder for this weapon- goblins.
Some poor goblin is dragging this into battle. He swings it overhead, but due to the immense weight, the little goblin is forced to let go at the pinnacle of his swing. The hammer hits some charging soldier, bounces off the skull (imagine this in slow motion for best effect), flips over, and utterly crushes it's former wielder. Seconds tick by, and another goblin starts to warily approach the weapon...

Quit complaining about equip costs. There are plenty of critters that can activate to attach equipment to critters, and unlike deathtouch mechanics, this is beyond damage mechanics. If you really want to snipe some creatures, Basilisk Collar fulfills that function with pingers and creatures like Pestilence Demon can be used to clear the board.
However, If you have say, Prized Unicorn or Taunting Elf, or some such, you can wrath someone's board and leave yours relatively untouched. If you want to preserve your creature that's doing this, there are a variety of ways to regenerate it or make it temporarily indestructible.
as a friend of mine just said, this will straight up kill someone if you can put it on a Blightsteel Colossus

I like sticking this on my Ghost Council of Orzhova. It's not as good as some of the other cards listed but it's fun to do.

Significantly worse than Basilisk Collar, although not quite strictly worse.

Has nobody else noticed this works with regenerators? It's destroy, not sacrifice. So you can have a crazy good blocker or a really aggressive attacker
Darksteel Myr may not have enough strength to kill even a Kobold on his own, but apparently that's enough to use this hammer to kill anything that moves.

Darksteel Sentinel seems like he'd make the most use of this, to be honest. Vigilance allows him to take advantage of both uses of the weapon, unlike Darksteel Myr who's going to mostly be sitting around waiting for someone to attack him.
It also does a handy job of saving him from infect and wither; it's killed before it deals damage.
