Turning a land you control into a 7/7 with haste that's still a land on at turn four or five is damn awesome in my book, this card will definitely be going into my R/G Aggro deck once Innistrad and M13 rotates.

I was going to say this reminds me a lot of Shingeki no Kyojin. But thanks to Ferlord, I will forever refer to my new mountain friend as George the Volcano.

This can be a really powerful finisher in a Mono Red deck. Nice.

@Ferlord Argh, you beat me. But finally, we can fill our lands with volcanicity.

There's no reason for this to grant haste, but my guess is that they saw new players arguing about it in a playtest and decided they could circumvent the need for rules knowledge by having it grant haste as a freebie.

The giant is awake because the player is done tapping that "Fee-fi-fo-fum."

this card is gonna confuse at least half the magic players I know. instead of giving the land haste, they should've just put reminder text about summoning sickness.

I find this very reminiscent of the zendikons from the worldwake set.

so pretty much 7/7 haste for 1RedRedRedRed, unless you don't mind the mountain being tapped out.

Easily 2-for-1'ed, but this has superior stats and will probably be played at the top of the curve so losing a land won't be horrible. 4.3/5.

They probably gave this haste because if it didn't, if you played the mountain that same turn, it can't attack or tap, but if you played the mountain last turn, it can attack and tap, which is difficult for new players to understand

7/7 haste on T5. Red's looking potentially strong.

I'll say that the haste isn't totally useless either, may allow a combo deck to evolve out of it; say with a Lotus Cobra + Harrow or something else suitably weird.

Gives red wonderful resilience. Awesome. Wish Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle was a mountain. That would be too epic.

I'm kinda sick of hearing everyone say that it makes your land vulnerable to Doom Blade and Murder and whatever else. Yeah, so what? I guess all those manlands (Blinkmoth Nexus, Mutavault, Inkmoth Nexus, etc.) were all bad because they could be destroyed too? Because based on their price tags and continued play, I'd have to disagree.

I'm not saying this card doesn't have its downsides; it's probably strictly limited to very specific aggro decks, but dropping a 7/7 turn four is nothing to scoff at, especially when you consider that it's so easy to pair up with a Rancor or a Legion Loyalist to give it trample. Sure, it's probably strictly limited to RDW and Gruul (maybe Boros depending on the build), but honestly, how can you complain about swinging for 7 turn five guaranteed?

I think the man lands are valuable because when one plays one as his land for the turn, he is also getting for free an uncounterable creature that he can still use to cast another spell at no tempo loss. Creature gets killed? He loses a land. This enchantment is counterable, and can be two-for'd.

What would you use: elemental appeal or this? The elemental token can attack on turn 4, unlike the ancient (which would have to attack on turn 5 since you have to enchant one of your lands), it has trample and can be kicked. However, the token dies at end of turn while this acts as a solid creature, a 7/7 with haste for 4 mana (or 5 if you count the land). If you don't use the generic "dies to doom blade" argument, which I'm going to assume we're not (because we're optimists and we don't like to fathom the idea of losing a land because of a doom blade), this can actually be better than elemental appeal if it survives for a few rounds or you give it trample, say by adding good ol' rancor so it isn't chump-blocked. When I first saw this, I thought it was overpowered (being the timmy that I am), but it's just really good. I personally would still use elemental appeal since I can get it out earlier but hell, the fact that it can potentially be better than elemental appeal gives it a 4/5 in my books. But the question still stands, what would you use?

This could be a really good finisher in red-deck-wins. At 4 mana, it can top your curve nicely. Hellrider is rotating out soon, so this guy is a nice replacement. I think this card should have got trample though. Oh well. I might make a budget standard RDW (red deck wins) deck with this guy at the top of the curve just so I have a standard deck. Maybe a splash of white would be nice for some of the good boros aggro cards.

Another way to think of this card is:

Awaken the Ancient 1RedRedRedRed
Creature - Giant
Haste
When Awaken the Ancient enters the battlefield, sacrifice a mountain you control.
7/7

That's roughly the same. So, it's alright. I'd play it in limited. In constructed... hmmm...

This reminds me of Rathi Dragon, once played in sideboards of RDW for against mirror. Against control it would have been horrible. But red aggro with their Firebolts and Lava Darts had trouble dealing with an opposing 5/5 flyer. This card leaves me with a similar impression, although it's nowhere as good (fast) as Boros Reckoner even for that purpose.

It's possible to play this on T2 in Standard right now. You need:
Stomping Ground
Arbor Elf
Infernal Plunge
Awaken the Ancient
(any other land)

T1: Play Stomping Ground, take 2 to untap it, play Arbor Elf
T2: Play other land, tap Stomping Ground for {R}, tap Arbor Elf to untap Stomping Ground, cast Infernal Plunge saccing Arbor Elf for {R}{R}{R}, tap other land for {1}, enchant Stomping Ground with Awaken the Ancient, swing for 7.

@Opined_Fluke:
They probably gave it haste because tournament-level players would throw a s***-fit if their opponent enchants the Mountain they just played because they weren't paying attention to which ones wouldn't have to deal with summoning sickness

Once, there was a card. Everyone laughed at it. It's powers were almost useless at the time.

But then the Ancient awakened. There was chaos. All panicked. What could we do? And then we remembered him.

The Haste makes it playable , even if kill it for the 2 for 1 you can time it smart to near ensure 7 Damage and if you've baited their removal than it can be a game ender 4/5

Making it grant haste makes it slightly better, but only in very fringe cases. If you have a way to cast this but don't have any Mountains (for example, you have 4 Dragonskull Summits) and then you topdeck a Mountain, you can use the mana from the other lands to equip this to your Mountain and swing that turn, whereas if it didn't grant Haste you wouldn't be able to do that. Its a pretty rare scenario but its still possible.

A bomb in draft.... Very difficult to deal with....

Constructed is another story... Still a solid card but you risk getting 2 for 1'd unless you can get him a pair of swiftfoot boots...

a 7/7 for 4 mana at any point is ridiculously good outside of green. the haste is gravy and hits hard.
