Its ability really just makes it worthless unless you can redirect the life gain...

Donate +freed from the real. See? Even the crappiest card can have a crappy little combo to go with it.

combo with things that go well with your opponent gaining live like that green kavu 2mana 2/2 gets big guy or punishing fire

There are better combos with Donate & Freed from Real than trying to get some life; like decking or killing the opponent.

Better things to use those cards on yes but we aren't discussing about what's best for those cards. We're discussing this card; and this card could definitely make use of Freed from the real + Donate.

..As to contribute to the comments in a constructive way: False cure could make it interesting. Everlasting Torment moots the lifegain, as does Stigma laster

As horrible as this creature is, keep in mind that when it was printed, I don't think regeneration tapped the regenerating creature.

That being said, this thing is basically a 2/2 for 5 when attacking, and while it can defend, it'll still hand out life to your foe when it regenerates. Horrible!

at least this card has some decent flavor.
so it's not the crappiest card.

Man does anyone know that regeneration doesn't tap it unless its destroyed? Probably could use a new word for regen wizards

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but this doesn't seem as worthless as all that. I don't know how much limited was really played in this card's time, but a 4 power regenerator is hard to attack into, so it would at least be useful defensively. It's also basically a hard-to-block 2-power attacker, which isn't exciting but certainly still relevant in limited. Also, any deck can cast it.

Obviously useless in constructed, but there are plenty of worse cards.

Why is this rated higher than the other version? At least that one has pretty sweet art (this one's okay).

Crappy card from a great set.

2/2 for 5. You drive a hard bargain mister, but I would have gone as far as 7 mana to do 2 damage to my opponent! Deal!

Yeah you can gain 2 life, ill prevent that 13 damage. Krosan Cloudscraper gets chumped again.

Paradise Mantle + Freed from the Real gives all opponents infinite life, lol. Not a bad way to make everyone rage quit actually xD

I imagine this guy would be pretty good with most equipment. Give him a quietus spike and the enemy can't really block him nor can they afford not to.

Actually a lot of flavor on this card - because unless you can somehow redirect the life gain, the artifact is, in fact, betraying you.

I found a good home for this guy in my Animar, Soul of Elements EDH deck. It's all based around playing cheap/free creatures and drawing to find more. Enablers: Primordial Sage, Soul of the Harvest, Kavu Lair, Recycle, Glimpse of Nature, Wirewood Savage, Garruk's Packleader, Vedalken Archmage, Fathom Mage or Cloudstone Curio. Of course, so do the other 9 artifact beasts.

Plus, in edh it's great to have a 4 power body in front of you to keep you from being a target and the 2 life only helps you play table politics.

You don't need to do anything silly like donate for this guy to shine, his errata to beast makes him an all-star for me.
