Not very exciting in limited as it can only counter 13 spells in the whole set. 6 in red, 4 in black, 2 in blue and 1 in white. 4 of them could target creatures too so that's only 9 spells hard-countered.

There are a lot of spells that target a player on the first turn (or after) in Legacy format.

It's a 1cmc Counterspell. It's easily twice as good as its current Gatherer rating of 2.5. These maybe very niche spells, but they always get played. Think of this one like this: "Counter target Lightning Bolt, Fireblast, or Lava Spike".

Conditional Counters for {U}
Dispel,Force Spike,Spell Pierce
Spell Snare,Mental Misstep,Nix

Counter-Destroyers for {U}
Blue Elemental Blast

Card type-hosers for {U}
Intervene, Envelop,Steel Sabotage

But really, I think the best card in Gatherer to compare this to is Turn Aside

And that's all the cheap-mana counterspells that aren't super powerful. If you want to pay 2 mana, just stick with the Original Counterspell, if you want to pay less, go Force of Will, and I'm not going to list all 176 mono-blue cards that counter target something spell, because this list is already quite extensive enough for most situations.

The counterspell in this set suck. And this is the better one.

I think this would have been fine as "spell or ability." It would still be pretty narrow, and that's fine for 1 mana counterspells.

@DeathParallax: Agreed and there are more...
Cursecatcher,
Flusterstorm,
Hydroblast,
Disrupt,
Annul,
Abjure,
Ertai's Trickery.

Out of all of these cards, only Abjure and Ertai's Trickery get a lower rating than Outwit.

@Becer: Actually, in Innistrad block there are a total of 37 spells that it can counter. Curses alone make it worth it. Here is the breakdown.

3 white, 7 blue, 10 black, 17 red

Is not as bad as people think

While you can counter spells directed at players like Edicts, you can also stop beneficial spells like Heroes' Reunion and Stroke of Genius from helping their casters

The card itself is...unique, to put it nicely. But DAMN, the art is something else.

Art like this makes me wish Hunter S Thompson could paint.

It is clearly some red hate. It really reads counter target burn spell.

I liked this card at first, but now I don't see why anyone would use this. It has a very narrow range of targets, so it's not very useful in control, and in Delver, it's not very useful because your opponent is more likely to target your Delver than you, and beyond turn 2 Mana Leak is better.

Seems like a great answer to Bonfire of the Damned

how bout we all quit bitching about how bad a card it is and recognize it for WHAT it is, which is sideboard fodder against red/black. no you wont burn me, i went first F*** ur duress, etc. etc.

"Outwit, I hate you and you probably hate me too. But we're gonna have to learn to coexist if we want to stop Bonfire of the Damned."

Seriously though, this is the most efficient answer for Bonfire of the Damned. Any blue deck would be wise to run this in its sideboard.

Honestly, the low rating kinda ***es me off.

The more open the format is so far as legal sets/cards, the more likely, IMO, you will find a situation where sideboarding this one is not at all a bad idea. It, as somebody mentioned before, can be useful in saving your ass from a burn spell AND preventing an opponent from benefiting from a spell that targets themselves.

It has niche uses, and this is probably better as a sideboard, but - depending on the format you play - spells that target a player, that you'd want to counter, aren't so absurdly rare that you can reasonably render this card completely useless or the like.

This is good in mainly 2 match ups: burn and control mirror, usually esper or UWR. This is a cheap response to thoughtseize and all the burn in the other control. This also is a kind of planeswaker protection, if you play the walker and leave one blue open you can usually prevent them from double-bolting your elspeth, because the rulings on burn spells and planeswalkers are such that unless it says "target planeswalker" it actually targets you but the caster chooses to assign damage to the planeswalker.
