I don't know if this card was ever good. I don't know the last time I've even seen someone play a card with a kicker.

Kicker is back with Zendikar and a once useless card is now far more viable, for now.

Oh c'mon. Kicker may be back with Zendikar but that doesn't make this card even marginally playable.

I would sideboard this but only so I can get rid of annoying cards that people kick tons of times. Like Comet Storm. Otherwise its worthless

Does this do multikicker as well I wonder???

Yeah, this will hit multikicker. If you look at the Oracle text for this card, it reads 'if it was kicked', which is the same wording that is used on multikicker cards (see Apex Hawks: "for each time it was kicked").

Some say that Hisoka's defiance has "won the "Least Subtle Block-Mechanic Hate" award" but really this one takes the cake.

Good against a kicker deck. If such things exist.

It would be a playable card in the block. THats what it was made for, to be a playable card... in a block with kickers. Tho they should have beefed it up by saying "counter target spell if it has a kicker cost" so you can counter even if they dont kick. You already run a risk of a dead draw, why spoil your day if they dont kick there spell

How would this work against say Molten Disaster ? It's kicker gives split second..... sorta hard to counter

If only R&D's Secret Lair was the other way around, and said play cards as errata. Then you could kick your opponent's card out of their hand and counter it for {U}!

@Atogatogatog: A card is only a spell if it is on the stack. As the stack is not a physical place, you cannot put a card from the hand onto the stack except by casting it or from the effect of another spell or ability. Causing a playing to drop their card will not work. It will just make everyone think you're a jerk.
I think it should have been a slightly-overcosted soft-counter that would outright counter the spell if a kicker cost was paid for it. That would be much more applicable.
@MTGFreak: A kicked Molten Disaster will resolve before Ertai's Trickery can be cast, as it cannot be responded to.
Hm, looks like Gerrard is about to kicker the bucket...

This is why I no longer boot my cards from my hand to the stack.

This isn't even good in Poetry Limited, which limits you to cards whose current rules text happens to be written in meter, like iambic pentameter. (Thanks, Oracle update!)
It would not surprise me to learn that there are game stores -- heck, entire regions of the globe -- in which nobody has ever resolved this spell.
Even at the time, folks mostly said, "so it doesn't even counter a spell with kicker unless they kicked it?! Oh forget this nonsense." And back then it wasn't even poetic!

I'm pretty sure Nezumi Shadow-Watcher is less subtle. ;)
