Because of this damn card I pretty much always pick black as one of my colors in Limited. It's common, so it's a good chance you'll get at least one. Even if the rest of the black cards are meh, I keep going back to "But Doom Blade is soooo good, I just gotta splash teh blackness". Ugh.

@ChaosK: You're claiming this is "classic" black removal? This card has only been around since M10. Sorry, but it has a long way to go to reach classic status. Your list of the iconic cards from other colors has similar problems. You include two relatively new cards (Doom Blade and Path to Exile) along with three cards that have been around since Alpha. And one of those cards (Counterspell) isn't even playable in Standard now. I don't disagree that Counterspell is the iconic card, but since your list includes such new cards for and , I would expect your list to include something newer and still in print from the other colors if you're including those. If you're going for iconic cards to fit your categories from all of the Magic universe, I would say Terror and Swords to Plowshares fit the bill better for and . They have both reached classic and iconic status, due in no small part to the fact that they have been around forever.
I totally agree on that point. It was more meant like its a classic black MECHANIC - i know that its not classic in the sense of "old". The examples i chose were the ones that (on my opinion) are the best/most commonly used nowadays for each mechanic/color. (although "best" is relative, i know - you get the idea) Thats the reason why there is doom blade in and counterspell in on my list.
But i agree that the wording "classic" is surely a little bit misleading - deleted it :)

I'd like to doom blade everyone who trivializes powerful creatures without shroud/hexproof with a "it dies to doom blade" comment. it's like "yea, we understand the rules of magic, do you have doom blade perpetually in your hand?, or a deck full of doom blade clones? You are either cheating, or really bad at deckbuilding."
Apparently every single deck that has ever existed has about twenty of these in it due to the number of "dies to Doom Blade 0.5/5" comments that I see on these.

Not remotely overpowered; cards like these merely illustrate the reason why Timmy is bad at Magic. Timmy's plan A is his 10cmc BFDragon, and he doesn't have a plan B. How many weeks of allowance did you save for that Dragon, Timmy? I got Doom Blade out of the commons box for a quarter...

I really think that this card is much better than Go For The Throat. What can you kill with GFTT that you can't kill with this? ...Grave Titan. But that's about it. GFTT was printed in an all-artifact block, so it's naturally less effective than it should've been. They're both easily 4.5 star cards, but I prefer this one.
All of which do Terror's job much better than it can in most cases. It would be like having Lightning Bolt and Incinerate in the same set or Burst Lightning and Shock. the latter would be pretty much a waste of a card slot as Bolt outclasses it. 2013 MIGHT be able to bring it back as everything but Victim will rotate out and the format will probably be a lot less artifact heavy.

For being talked about so much, people rarely choose this thing in constructed. This thing its nice, but situationally annoying (That opponent who only has black creatures.) I cant wait for the black instant that says destroy target creature. would be fair i think.
Rend Flesh and Eyeblight's Ending are as close as you can get for the same cmc. If you add other colors it gives you stuff like Putrefy, Maelstrom pulse, and of course Vindicate. Would it really break the game to add destroy target creature to Instant, of course not. That card would be far worse then Terminate, if the colors are relevant of course. I think its about time they gave me a destroy spell thats not situationally annoying.

@rhino20 Execpt, that's assuming they have the 1 mana open. Not to mention that card is completely unplayable and obsolete.
@TheWrathofShane Well, we do have Terminate it's better because the target regenerate. So long as you have red, or splash red, it's great. As for the R in the mana cost, it's not that big of a deal with solid dual lands. You just have to adjust your mana pool appropriately. Your going to want to be saving Terminate for later in the game for the fatties. By then you should have a way to make red mana.
I love playing but it kinda sucks to have to base like half your deck around granting protection and hex-proofing just to be able to have a decent sized creature on the field nowadays. =/

I can't believe this wasn't reprinted in M13. It's the perfect back removal. I run four of these and four Terrors in my vintage black deck. It would go great in standard alongside Murder as well. Players would have to decide if they want cheep removal that would be weak to black or expensive removal than is strong against everything.

@layk How so? Using this you can kill the Red vampires, the Red & Green Werewolves and the Blue Zombies. With this you can splash black into most decks. Despite the fact Victim of Night has a numbers advantage (not a lot of creatures are vampires, werewolves and zombies) It's less splashable and quite honestly not as awesome.
