Not as cheap to use as Feldon's Cane but at least you get to use it as many times as you want.

Also, Baron Sengir in the flavour text? Are they foreshadowing a return to Ulgrotha?

good anti-mill and decent lifegain for low cost

Baron Sengir brings back memories of the good ole days. This card will also help decks that want to run Serra Ascendant.

It's nice to have generic artifacts for Phylactery Lich to inhabit. I think putting one in a deck with a Diabloic Tutor allows you to respond well to a variety of situations.

Thomasbchillin: Trinket Mage should have been legendary! I could write novels about his adventures. Here's to hoping they reprint it this fall.

So if I Have some of these in my deck, then the more the game progressed, the less likely I am to draw something that can kill my opponent or weaken his board position in any way, right? Uhm... I think I will pass on this one. :|

This card is ridiculously underrated, as far as I see it. For one more mana than a Thran Foundry, you get a reusable "Feldon's Cane" effect with the bonus of a 5 point life boost? So if it were me I would be using this to shuffle all of my removal back in after I've used up enough of it, and then use something like Jace TMS to pull that removal back into my hand.... over and over and over again... throw in the life gain as padding, and this seems really solid. What's not to like?!

Sideboard two Emrakuls for anti mill, that really saves your ass, not this.

At least thematically it represents approaching immortality in magic. Games are lost by having 0 life or an empty library, this card counters both. I'd still rather an Eldrazi lord to fight mill.

Baron. @#$%ing. Sengir.
Awesome. 5/5
Anyway, it is pretty good for colorless lifegain, as far as that goes, right? More than one step up from the ridiculously powerful Elixir of Vitality

@Majinara: It depends on the deck you're playing. If you have lots of Instants and Sorceries that don't really matter late game, then it's not as good. But if you're playing with mostly permanents and a few game-changing Sorceries/Instants (or lots of card draw spells) then it helps you reload your bullets, thin out your deck, and gain 5 life to boot. Just avoid using it with Fetchlands.

What is this card's errata? Does its controller shuffle his or her graveyard into his or her library, then Elixir of Immortality's owner shuffles it into his or her library? Or does the owner do the entire action?

This card is broken. Seriously, there are some rules that SHOULD NOT be broken... one of those is that it should never go into the library of someone who doesn't own it. This card, if stolen and used, does exactly that.

Umm...Majinara, this is still fairly good. It fries mill, and Dregrage, Emrakuls are so stupid, they're banned at my local Magic store. Who cares about Emrakul. Its trash. I hate it.
Though not many people play mill anyways. Especially since there is so much anti-mill floating around right now.

Being able to reset your library at will in burn/control decks is very nice in limited. If you exhaust your bombs and you have this on the field you have a shot at getting them back. The life ain't bad either!

if you used Steal Artifact or Confiscate, among the many other permenant snatchers, would you shuffle this into your deck? or would it go back to the original owner's deck?

Seriously? 1 mana into play and 2 to activate it? This is IMMORTALITY, man. You get to reuse your cards endlessly. Back then only Blue have the luxury of recycling their libraries but this bottle of blessing is shared now by all. And with my advise, I suggest y'all use it to see its power been put to use.

HELP!!! extremely broken if this works
Using Voltaic Key in Response to Activation of Elixir of Immortality to Untap Elixir of Immortality then Again Activating Elixir of Immortality for a total of 5 mana you receive 10 life
since the cost is 2 and tap: and not 2 and shuffle: then its on the stack twice... so...

Great, but needs errata to cover the situation of someone other then the owner gaining control of the Elixir and activating it. This isn't the days of ante, you know.

This card is good on its own, but it absolutely dominates M11 limited with the sick amount of mill that goes on there. I think this artifact is definitely worthy of 5 stars. Two solid effects for such a cheap price, and it goes right back into your library. I really, really love the function and flavor of this..5/5

5 Star Card!

It's a reusable Feldon's Cane and you get 5 life. FANTASTIC!

I've already bought 14. 2 for each of my favorite decks.

Alright this is going to sound dumb, Wizards i am begging you to ban this card. There is not a single deck that would not benefit from it. There is not a way to kill this card, " how about i o-ring, well i will sack in response". It Is a great card to use in your deck. It draws games out exceptionally longer. This card has no down side and every top deck will be running it. Honestly why wouldn't they? Its a cheap card. You don't have to believe me but you should.

A Must use in EDH and/or multiplayer.

Seems like great tech against graveyard hate, especially for decks playing Sun Titan and/or Emeria, the Sky Ruin. Instant speed protection against Bojuka Bog and Ravenous Trap. The life gain is just gravy :)

Another cheer for the Baron Sengir quote. They could have used Markov. Could have used Drana. Or Kalastria or Kalitas. They could have even used Crovax... but they used the original. Awesome.

I tried it out tonite using proxies since I my order just went into the mail today, but it was everything I hoped for. The card was just unbelievable in both MP, team games and a few duels.

Its not a great a card. Its crucial against certain decks, otherwise its just 5 life for three mana. Sidebar?

I put this into my Alara Block artifact deck. Combine this with Sphinx Summoner and Master Transmuter and you have a wonderful little method of recycling your library and gaining life. Psychotic.

@BioPrince

Unfortunately, using Voltaic Key to untap Elixir of Immortality would not allow you to use its effect twice. The reasoning for this is because Elixir of Immortality gets shuffled into your library immediately after it resolves on the stack. So, even though you would have tapped it twice, it would get shuffled into your library when the first instance on the stack resolves, preventing the second instance from ever occurring. But its still a fantastic card!

@chrisxgordon: not true, going over the rulebook it only gets shuffled after it resolves, not when you pay the activation cost:
"8/15/2010: Paying the activation cost of Elixir of Immortality's ability doesn't cause it to leave the battlefield. If you have a way to untap it, you can activate the ability multiple times in response to itself."
Voltaic Key works here as long as you have the mana. Hope that helps!

Anyways, this card can fit into almost any deck, 5/5. A favorite in Limited Draft here.

400.3. If an object would go to any library, graveyard, or hand other than its owner’s, it goes to its owner’s corresponding zone.

However:

101.1. Whenever a card’s text directly contradicts these rules, the card takes precedence. The card overrides only the rule that applies to that specific situation. The only exception is that a player can concede the game at any time (see rule 104.3a).

Elixir's text says "Shuffle Elixir of Immortality and your graveyard into your library." Based on 101.1 making Exlir of Immortality override 400.3, a stolen Elixir from an opponent should go into your the deck.

Elixir should just be errated to say:

2, T : You gain 5 life. Shuffle Elixir of Immortality and your graveyard into thier owner's libraries.

Leave one slot for this and you'll never worry about an empty library again, and it also doubles up as early game lifegain (say, before you can play Day of Judgment). Really good card as a one-of in UW control decks or their sideboards.

@Athinor

What deck nowadays can't benefit from a 5-point shot in the arm for cheap? The fact that graveyard recursion is tacked on makes it all the better.

Combine that with the nigh-invulnerability of it (Steel Sabotage notwithstanding...seriously, this card is more useful than people think) and it's disgustingly powerful.

I thought we all learned the lesson from Feldon's Cane that cards like these are not good. You might draw the cards you reshuffle, but it's very likely that you won't see them again; unless you have a recurring search engine, like Survival of the Fittest or Artificer's Intuition, putting the cards in your library cannot be depended upon as a means to get a second use of them. And a Gaea's Blessing or Eldrazi legend would be more effective if you wanted to fight mill decks.

This card adds life gain to the package, but you could probably save yourself five life by playing a card that actually helps you win the game. If you're playing against a mill deck, the opponent isn't trying to attack your life total -- what do you need life gain for?

They're selling you snake oil with this card.

Baron Sengir should be remade as a Planeswalker, Nicol Bolas-style.

Oh, and Elixir's a pretty nifty card too. Read that ruling too. 2, trigger Voltaic Key's untap ability in response on Elixir with 1, then another 2 to tap Elixir again. 10 life for 5. I like.

This card allows my casual artifact deck to reshuffle my used artifacts back into my library so I can tutor for them again. I use this with Mirrorworks so I can make several copies of it at once. I could also use Clock of Omens to activate it multiple times and gain a crap load of life.

Great card since it buffers your life total against really aggressive decks. 5/5

Hmm. I want to run 4 just to give myself an emblem that reads "{8}, tap and shuffle four untapped cards named Elixir of Immortality you control and your graveyard into your libary: Regenerate yourself."

Super annoying in enchantment/control decks. They keep putting cards out and thinning their library into just the control cards while the enchants/creatures win the game. It's pretty brutal when they use the same bounce spells over and over and.. over...

Very usable and quite a good way to get your deck moving while staying alive. 3 copies in a deck should be good.
