As with most planeswalkers, if you have Ajani and a white deck, use him. He can actually give a lifegain deck a chance at winning!..... Well, maybe.

The most crucial decks for Ajani are black/white tokens, green/white tokens, and mono-white weenie. His second ability has immense power with these kinds of cards. His first ability is also good as well since if he is ever damaged by spells it will mean extra life for you. Can't say that his last ability is all that great and considering the power his first two abilities its probably never going to need to be played.

It is counters from the Avatar itself! on the lower right corner you add or remove counters from it, without reaching 0

That avatar creature would be a beast with lifelink (or better yet, give him the Behemoth Sledge to give llifelink and trample). He'd get 2/2 stronger every turn from Ajani's first ability (or he'd gain a +1/+1 counter), and then he swings away to deal damage equal to your life (maybe higher, depending on what equipment and counters he has), and then nearly doubles his own P/T, and the fun begins again next turn.

Ajani is unstoppable in a white token deck. For a long time, I tried to use him just to gain life, but not really worth it. Ajani's power lays in his 2nd ability... Pump out a bunch of soldiers, give them counters AND vigilance, and attack. Team him up with Elspeth, and you have the win.

ederchan did you say avatar?... you must have been sidetracked by the enormous monster created by ajani after 2 turns.

yeah. debating whether to use ajani or elspeth is always a tough decision. ajani's first ability is really pointless, except for building to his ultimate, which comes down alot faster than elspeth's. however, his second ability is amazing, the drawback being he cannot use this every turn, as he will die after 4 turns, most likely alot sooner because of attack. elspeth has one very useful ability (token), and one situational one (flying pump). however, both increase her loyalty so keep her alive longer, and her ultimate wins games... I guess in a soldier/creature based deck I will run 2 and 2.

If you can get the Avatar out and keep it alive (*cough* INDESTRUCTABILITY ENCHANT *cough*), as well as getting out a Wall of Reverence, you'll effectively double your health each turn. Not only that, but you'll double the power and toughness of the Avatar each turn thanks to that life boost.
Throw in a Cradle of Vitality, and you'll give another creature that many +1/+1 tokens for only 1W (if you're still on 20 health when you set the combo out, that's a massive +20/+20 for two mana). And that's the first turn. If they don't attack you for fear of your avatar squashing their forces, you'd be able to double your health again (from 40 to 80), and put +40/40 on a creature.
It's all theoretical and just begs your opponent to destroy your Avatar, Wall of Reverence, Indestructability enchants and Cradle of Vitality enchantment, but in a life gaining deck the avatar opens up terrifying possibilities.
so what you do, once you pump out the avatar, lets say it is a 5/5 (5 life) pay 2, equip shield of the ritgeous, pay 3 more, equip behemoth sledge, now it is a 7/9 trample, lifelink, vigilant that keeps what ever it blocks tapped, block, and it is now a 14/16 and you are at 12, swing, play rafiq, swing with the 15/17 FS, damage, it is a 30/32 and you are at 27, normal combat, damage, 60/62 and you are at 57, it goes down to a 59/61 without the exalted boost on their turn, block again, 116 life and it is a 118/120, your turn, finest hour, by the time it is over, you are at 1900 and your token is at 1902/1904
of course, that is assuming your opponent survived the first strike when you were at 12 life, you know, the turn before ^_^
now, that is a little tricky to pull off, I will admit it, but it is doable, and ajani's last ability is great for a mono white fog+lifegain deck, I dont think Ajani is the best planeswalker, but he is up there, and great in an agro deck due to his second ability, I wouldnt have minded if the first and second were reversed though

having played against it but not with it my opinion is that it's first ability is annoying but shouldn't cause too much trouble other than slowing the game. his last ability is alright but not too game changing unless played early enough against.. actually not really that great as white doesn't have much to stop it getting chump blocked or killed pretty fast. and his second ability is insanely good and can be very devastating if he isn't killed quickly.

Honestly, the ultimate is one of those either it works and you kill your opponent or you have it chump blocked by sage owls rest of the game or bitter blossom tokens, that is if it doesn't immediately get terminated or etc first. Only time I've had someone pull off the ultimate against me I used a slave of bolas on the avatar and smacked them with it. Sarkhans ability is arguably better since even though they are still creatures, you have multiples of them so unless they all get hit by a wrath of god they are less susceptible to removal. By far goldmane's best ability is his second one, that's just amazing for aggro decks. His first ability is closely mirrored by ajani vengeant and sorin markov, and the last ability has to many ways an opponent may counter it, some being especially brutal (mind control, sower of temptation, grab the reigns, and others).
Oh, and no you're not likely to get out a behemoth sledge and shield of the righteous together (though possible), especially since both are cast at sorcery speed. The only way you might be able to make that work is find a way to "flash" a kor outfitter into play or use a stone hewer giant and lightning greaves/whisper silk cloak. That's a lot of set up however just to keep your giant flying token alive, where as a vampire deck can just use vampire hexmage/dark depths to get the same effect with an indestructible 20/20.
Elspeth is a much better planeswalker hands down, as she's totally ridiculous with soldier tokens and her ultimate.

I have a deck built around this guy, specifically for my friends annoying sap deck. I use Soul Warden and Congregate along with a few other cards that boost my hp. When were playing if the draw allows with the mass amounts of lings spawning I reach 100+ hp extremely fast. Useing my counters to survive and a few uncommons until I get my avatar, I just continually feed him. When I get my avatar he is ends up being a nuclear bomb, coupled with goldmanes 2nd ability, and creatures i have out already, now recently "trample" in my deck aswell, its pure destruction. I don't see why no one likes his last ability, if you really want to utilize this guy it requires the proper combos and setup. I can see how having that avatar out would be frightening with control issues on the battlefield, but I also have Pitfall Trap if hes taken over, and Order/Chaos. And if ALL fails, Insurrection . So with good counters, life building, and backup goldmanes last ability is boss. More fun then simply dealing 1 dmg to all creatures without flying, and thats what I love about magic.

What's awesome is that the first ability will make the avatar continue to grow stronger :D
What would also be amazing is coupling Ajani with Elspeth's soldier-spawning ability. Elspeth makes a bunch of soldiers, Ajani uses his second ability to make them all stronger :D

The people saying that his ultimate ability doesn't win games just aren't thinking the right thoughts. Think one or two Rite of Replications in a Blue/White life gain deck (particularly hilarious when you also have a Baneslayer Angel or two out). Get the kickers going, and soon you've got a horde of potentially enormous frakking creatures. That said, while he may not be the best planeswalker, he certainly does have his extensive uses, whether he's in a mono white deck or a deck with just a splash of white.
+1 is lame, -6 pales in comparison to nearly all other planeswalker ultimates (chandra nalaar, I'm looking at you), but his -1 is golden in a token deck. His ultimate should have had trample or something, unless you enchant it. it will just get chump blocked or removed. bwlow average amongst planeswalkers in my opinion.

wow he could get you a 24/24 or bigger on the 6th turn I am so getting him!!!
I recently got my hands on one of these guys and I feel like out of all the planeswalkers this guy is one of the planeswalkers that gets ignored the most (not a bad thing).
For 4 mana you really are geting a pretty good deal, you can pump him to gain life and set your self up for his final, but this only works if you have a strong defence, and often the avatar won't be able to break through the lines.
I feel were the most power lies is with his seconed ability. You can use him to continusly boost all your creatures (great for white weenie decks) and make it so you can attack without worrying about leaving creatures as blockers. A very powerfull ability that is all to often overlooked.
Ajani Goldmane is an intresting planeswalker and one of my personal favorites. While many people consider him weak since he does not have an ability that ends the game when it goes off, what makes him great is that he has an ability that sets you up to win that can be used the moment he hits the field.

His collector number, no matter what set he's in, is always #1.
Coincidence? I think not.
Cause AJANI IS NUMBER 1
His ultimate is pretty mediocre. It has no trample or flying or haste or anything, which means it gets chump blocked all day, and if you're at low life it's useless. Yeah, you could use a kicked rite of replication, but a kicked rite of replication with ANYTHING is pretty much gg.
His +1 is crap, which makes it even harder to build to his ultimate because he's sitting around doing effectively nothing for several turns until he gets 6 loyalty. lol2 life.
However, his -1 is amazing, and whenever I play him, it's the only ability I use. It's a great way to pump your guys AND keep you safe. Don't underestimate vigilance. Or permanent +1/+1. It can even work with persist to get rid of -1/-1 counters. The only problem is keeping track of how many +1/+1 counters each of my creatures have.

While planeswalkers are (almost) always good with doubling season, this is very good.
It comes in with 8 counters, activates its ultimate, which gives you 2 enormous avatars. This has won me many edh games. (In my Rhys the Redeemed deck.)
