With the new Goblin Lord giving Haste, this seems like an odd choice. Not sure what I would have done in their place (does red have another ability they can put on a 1/1 for 1?)...

First strike can be considered a red ability that could always be placed on a 1/1 red creature. Other than that I'm not sure what other abilities could be legitimate for a 1/1 (perhaps wizards should think about making new abilities in the next base set).

The haste is still good, 1 damage first turn if you are going first or they dont have a creature out. Makes devour fodder or becomes a 2/2 or 3/3 attacker a few turns later.

A few years ago I used to run a red/green weenie deck with a lot of creature pump, tell you what most people don't like it when you burst in second round with a raging goblin all pumped up to 4/4 with giant growth, unless it was early rounds this card was all that usefull

im a big fan of the rager this little man is kicking strong as ever 1rst turn smack for 1 and can keep ur burns in hand and next turn why not buff him with teetering peaks or just goblin war paint then next kick a bushwhacker and the pain keeps comeing a solid one drop

This guy's legendary. Great to start the game on. Once you get chieftain out and dont need his haste then use him in a fodder launch to really burn your enemy.

What's the point? The haste only means 1 more damage, which doesn't usually make a difference. Most goblins are better. For example, Mogg Fanatic gets the extra 1 damage, but can do it to a creature instead, making it far superior.

good if you draw him in your opening hand, but not so much later in the game. Why I like having Chandra Ablaze in my monored deck, she can turn a whimpy 1/1 goblin that I drew late game in to 4 damage

Very solid card.
I want to run two of this guy and two Boros Recruit in my Goblin casual deck.
Mostly since Boros gets kinda crappy late game, since I normally have a Bloodmark Mentor out already.

He's pretty much outclassed by Goblin Guide in most cases, but he's solid nonetheless.
Not bad back in the day, but its now clearly outclassed by Goblin Guide. :3

@dragonking987: Except the fact that Raging Goblin's creature types are vastly more supported than those of Skitter of Lizards. Raging Goblin is actually pretty good, and no doubt playable in budget goblin decks.

Amazing for a 3 turn kill. 1st turn: play a mountain and a Raging Goblin, attack with Raging Goblin. Opponents life total 19 2nd turn: play another mountain and Ruby Medallion, attack with Raging Goblin again (hopefully they don't already have a creature or block). Opponents life total 18 3rd turn: play another mountain, attack with Raging Goblin, play 2 Blood Lust for 1 red mana each thanks to ruby medallion (after blocking phase if they don't have a creature or block, before combat damage is assigned), making the Raging Goblin 9/1. Opponents life total 9. Play fling for 1 red mana thanks to Ruby Medallion again, sacrificing the 9/1 Raging Goblin doing 9 damage to the opponent reducing their life total to 0.

I got this card out of my first booster pack. (10th Edition.) It and Siege-Gang Commander prompted me onto making a Goblin/Zombie Deck (Zoblins if you will.)
I was expecting him to come back in M12, I think he would work nice with Bloodthirst.

1 extra damage can decide if you win or lose, for example, if Raging Goblin didn't have haste, he couldn't deal the 1 extra damage you say is so useless (fastfoward in the game) your opponent has 2 heallth because Raging Goblin didn't have haste, you attack so they have 1 health, you end your turn. They draw Near-Death Experience, game over. But if Raging Goblin had done haste damage, your opponent would aready have 1 health left, you woul attacck and win before your opponent drew Near- Death Experience,do you still think 1 damage still doesn't matter?

I remember getting this guy in a bunch of random Starter 1999 cards I got when I first started playing (along with a Grim Tutor!). To me he's always been the quintessential red card: cheap, fast, and a goblin.
Is he outclassed today by Goblin Guide? Yeah, but he also costs about $2.00 less and if your opponent is playing a deck that emphasizes card advantage (discard, lockdown, mill, etc), you could be giving him a lot more help than you think.
I still consider him a 4-of in any budget goblin deck, just a timeless card.

As awesome and classic as this card is, I'm sad he didn't come back in 2012. He's no Goblin Guide, but I've been getting a lot of mileage out of him ever since I started playing this game.

Ah Raging Goblin...This guy was my first goblin ever. I played him on turn one so many times that my friends usually just started the game with 19 life and told me to just put my guy down. I was sad when I took them out for...Goblin Warchief or Mogg War Marshall or something.
Now free with chancellor of the forge. The 1 damage is doable early game if you go first, but there are better choices in goblin guide if you got the scratch ;)
The flavortext is quite enjoyable; this card was perfect for me when I started magic as BOY did I get upset a lot :)

One of my personal all-time most hated cards. Not because it's good: quite the opposite. It's actually practically one step up from Eager Cadet and yet people say that it's great. Well, I think that it's a mediocre goblin 1-drop whose awfulness is hidden by the fact that it's a goblin and that it appears to be a slightly worse version of Goblin Guide, an actually good card.
What does this card really do that a vanilla 1-drop goblin does? Possibly get in 1 free damage if you play him on an early turn. Later on he's a terrible draw since his haste matters even less then because you'll likely have a goblin lord that gives out haste already, and aside from the haste he's just a vanilla 1/1, which is hardly consequential outside from all the bonuses it gets from being a goblin. That 1 free damage is rarely going to make the difference in the game.
I understand building on a budget, but this card is just strait up bad, with plenty of better options at all price ranges. My person favorite underrated bargain option is Goblin Sledder, an early-game beater that turns into a combat powerhouse once you start getting an army going. It allows you to swing for the fences and still get value out of those goblins that get blocked by significantly larger creatures. Let's say you swing with your dudes, and they block 3 of them. You sacrifice them and force through 3 more damage. Even better, they try to block with 5 damage worth of lifelink, but you sacrifice the creature they're blocking so it deals no damage. Thanks to sledder, you force through 3 more damage and prevent them from gaining 5 life, a total of an 8 life swing. Not too shabby for a 1 drop. What would Raging goblin have done? MAYBE gotten 1 damage in.
Seriously, this guy is just out-classed as a 1-drop Goblin. Not only by the expensive staple cards, but by a ton of bargain bin cards as well. The ONLY excuse you have to run this card is if you have no access to any other 1-drop goblins.

Meanwhile, there are tons of other 1-drop goblins that have abilities that can actually win you the game. And I don't mean cards like Goblin Guide and Goblin Lackey who are out of reach for most casual players. I mean cards that cost 25 cents that are pretty much available to anyone. I would consider Boros Recruit, Frenzied Goblin, Goblin Arsonist, Goblin Bushwhacker, Goblin Fireslinger, Goblin Sledder, Goblin Taskmaster, Intimidator Initiate, Mogg Fanatic, Mogg Raider, Skirk Prospector, and Warbreak Trumpeter ALL to be significantly better then Raging Goblin, with all of those being common or uncommon. (And a lot of them not even being that good)
