Why is this such an expensive card monetarily? Seems worst than Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor. Simple scarcity?

More than likely, yes scarcity has a lot to do with the price. That, and it gives you any card into your hand rather than on top of your library, which is card disadvantage. Nice card btw, wish I could have gotten some, I remember this set pretty vividly.

It's expensive because it isn't restricted.

I don't think that it's expensive because it's unrestricted. I haven't seen a competitive deck that uses more than one of these. Once you have Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Imperial Seal in your deck, this can be tutor #4, if you're playing Dark Rituals in your deck. The reason it's expensive is because it's extremely rare (hardly anyone bought Starter boosters in any quantity) and it's playable in Vintage combo decks.

they should restrict it to push down the price :P
I'd say of black's "vanilla tutors" this one still isnt great, but all tutors are great. It beats out Diabolic for sure at least, four mana just isnt up to speed...
Rhystic Tutor deserves more attention, I think.

Alright, people. It's expensive because it doesn't say you have to shuffle your library afterwards.

@freakmaw - check the Oracle wording. You have to shuffle.

Does anyone know what the deal is on there being both a black bordered and white bordered grim tutor?
I saw some of each on ebay and was wondering what set each was from... any help would be appreciated... thanks

Easily the best non-restricted tutor in Vintage...and BEST tutor in Legacy. Not to take anything away from Infernal Tutor or Diabolic Intent, as they can be quite powerful as well. But Grim holds the crown atm. second only to Demonic Tutor imo. Sure, Vampiric Tutor is an instant and costs just B, but the card is placed on top of your library. (And yes, particularly in combo decks, Rhystic Tutor is not getting its props) Not only that but its hard to find better flavor text than Grim Tutor's flavor.

R&D secret lair.
Can look at your entire deck and know what is next, but not rearrange them.
