Nothing can replace the Mage, that's why it's back baby! But Runed Halo is still awesome. It can stop big attackers, or pesky cards like Thought Hemorrhage, Blighting, Banefire and others.

4 of these, and 4 meddling mages. Bye bye opponent's deck.

This card turns Progenitus into a cute little rabbit.
A Meddling Mage that can't be killed by creature kill. Screw with your opponent. Game one play with these, game two when they swap in their enchantment hate, swap in your Meddling Mages.

Fun in EDH when you name your opponent's General :P

Can having this and naming Teferi keep him from forcing you to cast spells at sorcery speed?

@DutchSanta - No. His ability doesn't target. Runed Halo would stop him from damaging you by attacking, but he'd still stop you from casting instants and Flash cards.
I actually like this a little better than meddling mage. you can play this after your target card is cast....whereas meddling mage, you have to know what is in the opponent's deck. plus this is not susceptible to creature removal, which is more prevalent than enchantment removal.
Just remember it gives protection to you, not your creatures. See what threats show up and immunize yourself. Run with rescue type effects to get maximum mileage. You'll always have a use for this in edh but remember there's only going to be one copy of the card you chose so pick wisely.

It's not a Meddling Mage variant, though it can be used that way.
Combining it with Manabarbs, Repercussion, Æther Sting, etc... cards that damage each player, makes those cards much more powerful.
One time, I summoned Batman, then played this naming the Joker. The other guy had this wierd look on his face, then conceded saying 'I dont care if thats legal. That should win any game.'

Wow. "You have protection from the chosen name". Cool texts.

On turn one, if you see a forest hit and the first thing cast is not an elf, cast this and name Tarmogoyf. Then proceed to win.

I name Tendrils of Agony, O whats that you concede ? why would that be.
Too bad Rumpelstiltskin isn't a legal name to use for this ability. If you felt like blowing a spell in a casual game, it'd be flavorful to have protection from him by using his name.

*name opponent* I choose you ... sadly it won't work since your opponent never actually deals you dmg...
Your Progenitus may have protection from everything, but I have protection from Progenitus.

A decent card, but sadly, this suffers from the Relentless Rats effect, a deadly disease that affects 90% of The Gatherer members who comment on any "name a card" effects, such as the Echoing cycle from Mirrodin
Once I obtain some, this would be an excellent addition to any Commander deck utilizing White. Just name your opponent's Commander, then they can't rely on the 21 Commander damage rule.
wow, half the combos people said here dont work. like worldfire, smallpox, descent into madness... i mean seriously, guys, read the definition of "protection" sometime...

"You can't choose as a name. Face-down creatures have no name, so Runed Halo can't give you protection from them."
Well, shoot. So much for getting protection from _____.

Could shut down certain cards and make some dead draws. Noncreature Enchantment is safer then most permanents, 4/5

Did anyone else notice that one of the 2008 Oracle rulings (fourth one down) specifically mentions fused spells?

Or use Earthquake or Hurricane, and have no fear of killing yourself.

I mean, like, really. Is this a reprint of an Un-card like Barren Glory was for The Cheese Stands Alone?
