How do you think they're going to make 'assemble' into an ability? On Magic Set Editor I made a card to go along with it, but it is a really complicated card.

HAH! It's hilarious that is dubs out the "a - s - s" in assemble! LOL

I love the ruling on this. It's like, "Yeah, it doesn't do anything...we...fucked up. Sorry guys." Is it a trick? Did they plan to use it at some point? I love how they made an irrelevant lord for a creature type with population 1.

Remember that the set was "Future Sight", who knows what wacky mechanics they will make, maybe contraptions will become a set "tribe"?? I hope they make a card years from now just for laughs to make this card important. It would be a decent thing to do, cuz there were alot of sour faces when they got this in their rare slot lolol!!!!!!! I have THREE!!!

I'm sure you've figured it out by this point, but this is the only Rigger card in existence other than Moriok Rigger, which doesn't work well with Steamflogger anyway.

Contraptions don't exist either, nor does an assemble mechanic. In the end, all this card can do is give a slight boost to Changelings.

As hilarious as Steamflogger Boss is, it really shouldn't be a rare. It's really just a kick to the balls for whoever gets it in a pack.

EDIT: lol, assemble is censored. They're censoring their own fake mechanics!

I think we will see this guy again when we return to Mirrodin because contraptions could have something to do with artifacts.

Golem Rigger, 2U
Creature - Vedalken Rigger
Assemble 2 (2, Sacrifice two artifacts: Put a contraption artifact token into play with power and toughness equal to the combined converted mana cost of the sacrificed artifacts.)

As with Lightning Bolt, wizard apparently had fun being self-mocking in the flavour text.

Although this card is quite useless right now, this appears to become a very playful card in future sets. I'm already content with the upcoming block using this mechanic. As already stated by other players, this will likely play on Mirrodin again. (Look at the goblin's body (especially his head), it seemingly has patches of metal growing on his skin.)

If this upcoming block has more contraption assemblement and less Ravager afffinity, even better.

Although they've stated they have no future plans for àssemble, if it was made into a card effect there's three ways it could go:

1.) Making token artifacts out of different cards, like the Chimeras from Mirage block. The fact you crate two instead of one implies its a token...
2.) Using riggers to àssemble strong or 'off cost' (i.e. lower cost) artifacts from your hand. Doubtful unless 'contraption' refers to multiple things on a single card. Also doubtful.
3.) Using riggers to cast instant/sorcery spells that themselves create artifact tokens that require riggers to assemble.

No matter what I think its obvious that:
a.) Contraptions are artifacts.
b.) Assembling Requires or can be done with multiple riggers.
c.) Multiple contraptions can be assembled at once.

Another idea people had was that riggers can generate an artifact token with no abilities when a player casts a particular "assembly" spell. The spells then add onto the powers and attributes of this artifact token.

I just want to mention that WoTC officaly stated that there will never be Contraptions. They made Steamflogger Boss as an inside joke. But they stated that they regreted making it a rare instead of an uncommon because it wasn't fair to thouse that pulled this out of a booster as their rare.

If this is as useless as I think it is, and you say it is, why the 3+ rate? Unless we're now rating cards for their fun factor only. At any rate, while I find it funny, I would hate to open a booster to find this in it as a rare.

Well, this card is terrible since it can't do anything because you can't "assemble" any "Contraptions" right now. I can't really rate this card untill the set that it's ment to be with comes into rotation. lol.

There is a recent article that mentions this on MTG site, http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/ld/65 .

As for the card, i have to say this one just spoils there is going to be an artifact themed set very soon. MaRo is going to be head designer just for one more set (codename Lights, Camera, Action). He is said to be planning on revisiting Mirrodin (WotC has registered related names like Mirrodin Pure).

This is just a wink to players. This is 'confirmed' with other Mirrodin-like styled cards as Darksteel Garrison. Also, Rise of the Eldrazi is going to feature immense demigod artifacts, and future sight cards like Ghostfire have flavor text that mentions characters from Zen block and novels.

Im interested to know if Tarmogoyf makes it into any of the already 'concept designed' sets... will that increase it's value (is that even possible?) or lower it? If they make him mythic then it will become more expensive.

Reminds me of Blinkmoth Nexus really. And why do people assume the Contraptions are/would be creature tokens at all? They sound more like noncreature artifacts/enchantments to me. I think it'd be cool to use the old Chimera effects in this sort of thing though; a bunch of small dudes that put random parts together to get a 'build your own enchant' sort of deal(HINT HINT, wizards).
One set of riggers would decide if the contraption hits all creatures, tap: hit target creature until end of turn, equipment for a creature, and another set of riggers would determine what it would do; flying for (blank), +1/+1 for (blank), trample for (blank), ect. That'd be cool. Too cool for wizards.

Sheesh, even the flavor text alludes to the fact that nobody knows what the heck this card was meant to do. Good thing the oracle clears up any misconceptions of this card actually doing anything:

Steamflogger boss is from ... Futuresight ... which is a set that was suppose to show us things that "might" happen in the future. just like Arcanum Wings and the aura swap ability this may never be used again. and no it is not a wasted rare because there has to be balance. Every set produces at least one horrible rare to counter the awesome rare. It is to insure that decent rares are just that ... rare. so steamflogger boss isnt neccessarily the reason you didnt crack tarmogoyf but he is one of the reasons rare like tarmogoyf keep there general value in the set. so thanks steamflogger boss for taking one for the team.

Making a rigger set on MSE, codenamed "damn those riggers."
Here's the base card-
Steamflogger Flunkie {R}
Goblin Rigger 0/2 common
Haste
T: Steamflogger Flunkie assembles a contraption.

Contraptions are just like Emblems in that they aren't permanents and can't be targeted. They work like mana but they don't go away until you use them. How do you do that?

Steamflogger Trapper {2}{R}
Goblin Rigger 1/3 common
T: Steamflogger Trapper assembles a contraption.
T, Disassemble two contraptions: Put a Bear Trap artifact token into play. It has “T, Sacrifice this: Destroy target attacking creature without flying.”

And that's how I think "assemble" should work.

Melting Pot {1}
Tribal Artifact-Rigger
Disassemble three contraptions: add {R}{R}{R}{R}{R} to your mana pool.

Sure why not.

I find it interesting that it seems like he might work with artifacts (presuming Contraptions are artifacts, which makes sense, unless they would be their own Type), and it is red, where Blue tends to like artifacts way more. Red does like them too, but considering this is a one-of, I find it interesting they didn't make it red. Unless they were thinking of Contraptions as their own type...

@Shinigami-2099: This isn't a waste of space just because they haven't revisited it. For every card in Future Sight they didn't and won't revisit, it provides the uncertainty for us as to which cards they haven't revisited that they will.

I do find it interesting that they came out and said they wouldn't do it. They must have gotten really tired of hearing about it.

I would assume that a contraption is essentially an Artifact Token.

For example.

Catapult Builder................1Red

Creature- Goblin Rigger

Tap Assemble a contraption
with "Red, Tap: This contraption
deals 2 damage to target
creature."
....................................1/1

its a very open-ended mechanic it would be a shame if Wizards never used it.

look future sight was a look into the future meaning it may still have not come out so quit posting that it sucks or it's a gag card because we don't know yet and won't till it either comes out or magic Ends I am willing to bet that if a set like this ever came out it's rating would sky rocet (maybe) so why hate rate it when you don't know if it will be usefull, I mean there very well could be a steampunck goblin set (please god) in our future or at least a steampunck one. I for one ( and probably the only one) would love to get this in a pack and would love to laugh at all who thought it would never exist when (or if) it comes out. now it would have sucked if this card was mythic in this set, but if it ever came out in the set it came in I'm sure it would be mythic. this will be the next tarmogoyf

If I played Magic when this card came out, my first reaction would have been: "like, what the hell"?
Now, five blocks later, it would have been the same.
I've already lost hope of this mechanic being used one day, but I suppose "Contraptions" would be either some kind of token, in which case "Assemble" would probably mean "Put a Contraption token on the Battlefield", or some kind of non-creature artifact (like a curse is for enchantments), in which case "Assembling" it could be somewhat similar to the Transform mechanic in Innistrad (see Howlpack Alpha).

Examples:

Assembly Rigger - 1R
Creature - Goblin Rigger
Tap Goblin Rigger - Assemble a 0/1 Contraption artifact creature token (Put a 0/1 Contraption artifact creature token on the battlefield).
1/1

(or)

Assembly Rigger - 1R
Creature - Goblin Rigger
Tap Goblin Rigger - Assemble target Contraption.
1/1

Contraption Golem - 3
Artifact - Contraption
When Contraption Golem is assembled, it becomes a 4/4 Golem Artifact Creature with trample.

Well, it's just my ideas of how it would happen.

I think people are trying too hard at finding a purpose for this. Sure, he works with changelings, but lets take a step back.

Ignoring everything else, he is a Canyon Minotaur. Pretty standard, yeah I know. Now, put another copy on the field. He is a Ogre Taskmaster without the downside and Haste. Add another? You got a trio of Changeling Berserker without having to Champion.

Point being, it's like a pseudo-Grandeur. Each copy making the previous better. And how awesome is it going to be when they finally make his set? They say they aren't just in case they change their minds, no one will hold them to it, but Wizards works many sets in advance. I'm betting there is SOME plan for this guy.

Assembling a Contraption is mostly likely an idea WotC would implement after running out of a lot of design space. The complexity level is high. But since "assemble" would be a new game term it would be clear that it would follow new rules amended to the rule book which would go beyond, "sacrificing" or "exiling" some artifacts to make a token. There are already game terms for this. I would suspect that if they added "assemble" to the list of game terms it would involve stacking multiple artifact cards to create one Contraption that has all abilities, or given the rules text of Steamflogger Boss, it may be one token device built from several token parts that ceases to function once one of the pieces is destroyed or otherwise severed from the whole, perhaps also allowing the pieces to function independently with part of the device's capability. I like the idea of combing existing artifacts together to create one thing, however if this were the case assembling two of them would be of little to no use since you'd have to get twice as many artifacts on the battlefield anyway. Finding a way to maximize versatility and simplicity while still getting benefit from doubling an ability like this, and avoiding printing "part" or "cog" cards to assemble into a specific Contraption would be a difficult task indeed. And maybe they were just frakking around. And maybe they couldn't make it work good enough either......

People seriously need to be reminded that Moriok Rigger exists . . . do they?

It doesn't say "assemble two target Contraptions", so Contraptions don't seem to be something that can be targeted. However, in the Comp Rules, it is stated that Contraption is an artifact subtype.
rogelio
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Here's my theory on what Assembling Contraptions would be, or would have been.

Say Wizards creates a new artifact type called a Contraption. Let's say that Contraptions had the tendency of being a bit overpowered for their cost, boasting abilities that would typically cost around 4-7 mana but only cost like 2 or 3 mana on Contraptions. It would be a broken mechanic... if not for the fact that they aren't Assembled. So all Contraptions would basically have the ability "Contraptions cannot attack or block and activated abilities can't be activated unless a Rigger assembles it". Then each Rigger would have the ability Assemble {X}, where the player would pay X mana to assemble the Contraption (and to make it a little more bearable, we can activate only as a sorcery). So that way, Contraptions would be balanced out and not be overpowered in any way.

...That is, not until Steamflogger Boss has his way. His ability not only gives other Riggers +1/+0, but he also gives them the ability to Assemble another Contraption without paying the cost one more time. So that could get a little crazy if someone has a ridiculous Darksteel Colossus-level Contraption out.

That's just my theory, though.

Tarmogoyf was future-shifted and it is being printed in the future (June 2013) in a set he really fits into. Graven Cairns gave us a glimpse at the Shadowmoore lands. There are many other examples of this. Riggers and contraptions will eventually be included into a set and whether or not Steamflogger skyrockets in price, I will be proven right. As soon as Wizards releases teaser artwork for a set that seems to be based on steampunk (heaven forbid), I entreat you all to shoot this comment to the top in obeisance.

Moriok Rigger will help you assemble contraptions, and in doing so gain plus 1's! And that's what's good, my rigga.

Well, obviously "assemble" is an action word and "Contraption" is presumably an artifact subtype, perhaps with no inherent function but useful as a tag for tutors and various interactions. My guess is "assemble" would involve tutoring or playing a Contraption which could make this card quite potent.

Other factors to consider is that a Contraption is usually made of different parts, so maybe there's a "Part" subtype in the works that will be used to assemble such contraptions.

i would argue that circa GTC assemble does in fact exist mechanically.

I'd much rather if this guy gave your Contraptions haste instead of your Riggers. I mean, you likely aren't going to be attacking with your riggers (you really want to load up on Contraption Creatures), and the tournament playable riggers can all assemble at instant speed anyway. If Steamflogger Boss gave contraptions haste, then it would really push the Big Rig decks over the top:

Turn 1: Mountain, Tinker Tools
Turn 2: Mountain, Any of the two-drop Riggers
Turn 3: Mountain, Fortify Factory Line onto a Mountain. Tap fortified mountain targetting Tinker Tools, Sac 2-drop, play Steamflogger, play 2-drop Rigger.
Turn 4: Digging Rigger, and then you can Tinker Tools the Digging Rigger to dig and assemble every single Contraption Creature in your library.

Just the fact that Digging Rigger can dump a hasty Contraption Creature onto the battlefield and thanks to Tinker Tools you can generate mana and tap the Contraptions in reponse to saccing to dig for MORE contraptions? Yes please.

They could have made the Trap subtype be on artifacts instead, and called the Contraptions. Well... they still can I guess :)

Jesus Christ when I look back on the first four decades of Magic it's so obvious they had no idea what they were doing. Even with the removal of Haste in the M23 rulechange the assembly doubling here is ludicrous and just means you can't play 21st Century format without several billion bitcoins to drop.

If I have two of these, will I still only assemble two contraptions?

I've been using this guy incorrectly for the longest time... when I have two Steamflogger Bosses, I was making my riggers assemble three Contraptions. But the effect is actually MULTIPLICATIVE... so a rigger that would assemble two Contraptions because of one Steamflogger Boss, actually assembles four because of the second Steamflogger Boss!

When you've got four Steamflogger Bosses out, your riggers are assembling SIXTEEN Contraptions every time they would assemble one Contraption. CAARAAAAAYYYY-ZAAAY!

If riggers and contraptions are EVER a thing, this guy will be in massive demand. Riggers would most likely be something similar to token generators that benefit artifacts, so increasing the speed of token creation will be really useful if contraptions are worth anything.

@Lotusware

I like the haste for the Riggers. In my G/R Big Rig deck (splashing Green for Minecrawler Wurm and Groundblast), I can immediately tap my Dormant Rigger, assembling 6 contraptions! This guy's haste can help me win turn five, even against mono-land control!

T1: A Wooded Mine. Tap for artifact mana, drop an Illusionist's Fortification.

T2: Mountain, Dormant Rigger.

T3: Forest, Contraption Assembly. Dormant Rigger's ability triggers and I get another three contraptions.

T4: Wooded Mine, This guy. Swing with Dormant Rigger for five.

T5: Raw Tunnels, Hodge-Podge Rigger. Tap Dormant Rigger for 7, Hodge-Podge gets +1/+1 for all the Contraptions in play (15 by now) and swings through with his haste and trample for sixteen!

Not to be underestimated.

Hey, even without any other supporting Rigger cards, Goblins are a relevant tribal type and this guy still gives creatures with the Changeling mechanic still get a nifty +1/+0 and haste.

i bet the riggers and contraption would be like thallids and saprolings, just that the cotraptions would be artifact tokens with "sacrifice: deal 1 damage to target creature or player" and wouldnt be creatures, and the riggers would be the thallids. could be very strong.

I run izzet-rigger control and love giving my buddy's newspaper ramp deck the old 'oil spill' if you know what i mean. Blown Headgasket really upsets the little mana dumplings flow, breaking down a terrifying turn 3 curve into some Orzhov fatty. once i've depleted his hand with Contraption Mishappen and Smog Check, theres not much left to do but drop your win con, Steamflogger Boss. I love deploying the bomb 3/3 for 4, the look in my opponent's eyes is priceless. The best part is, he's knows i run 3 copies of Rite of Replication, JUST TO COPY THIS DUDE 5 TIMES. all other riggers get +1/0 AND haste wizards?? you gave me no other choice. i'd run izzet-rigger control sometime in a PTQ, but i dont want all the metadeckers getting my sweet list, know what im sayin? solid card 5/5.

From what I've read, this is a reference to Great Wall. It's a card that prevents creatures from having plainswalk, printed at a time when only one ever had it.

Everyone is speculating on what a contraption is, but I'm more curious about the term "assemble". Clearly assemble is not the same as "put into play" or they wouldn't need a whole new keyword for it.

Decent Rigger card. The only downside to this card is the +1/+0 and Haste that he provides. By the time you drop your Steamflogger Boss, all your other support cards (like your 'Whistlemaster Trainee' and 'Crankshaft Oilcan') will already have their Overtime ability activating in your opponent's turn. The haste only really helps if you've got a 'Lazy Mechanic' in play and need to tap him a turn early to counter your opponent from playing 'Shoddy Workmanship' or 'Makeshift Blueprint' on you.

The double assembly is super nice though. I personally prefer to play on the safe side and play 'Careful Planning' to double the bonus that your Contraptions give to each other.
