I can see this as being worth it in a tribal deck that had tribe- and color-enhancing enchantments and creatures on the field already. The first thing that comes to mind is Soldiers. If you have two Honor of the Pure, several Veteran Armorsmiths and Swordsmiths, a Field Marshal, and a Captain of the Watch in play, your 5 mana will result in some pretty big tokens, because you can pick color and creature type. The issue is that you have to already be set up for it to really be effective.

This is good if you play allies. It even allows instant-speed ally-ability activation.

It is amazing into a Sliver deck. Still its ability is huge expensive.
Think in Æther Charge + Volrath's Laboratory. You can get a 2/2 beast and hit 4 to your opponent.
So, not so bad in the right constructed deck.

I'd prefer a riptide replicator for most applications.

This and Heartstone go good with slivers.

The oracle text...

"The token does not have any built-in abilities. For example, choosing creature type Bird does not give the token Flying."

...makes me laugh.

Because tokens take on the same name as their creature type, could this card be combo-ed with Relentless Rats? Technically the Tokens created would all be called Relentless Rats if you chose Relentless Rats as the creature type. Wouldn't the same then go for the Brothers Yamazaki?

@Zorgath: "Relentless Rats" isn't an accepted creature type. It's not on the list.

I say blue Brushwagg, then green Uncle Istvan, then white Zombie...

re: ruling

This card was back in the days where certain creature types had intrinsic rules. That means that presumably if you used this to make wall tokens, they could not attack. Similarly, if you used this to make legend tokens, you could only make one. Many cards that had you choose a creature type wouldn't let you choose those two, especially if they affected your opponent's creatures. Presumably they didn't think it didn't make sense thematically to produce walls or legends with this thing.

Expensive? Perhaps, but the shenanigan potential is well worth it.

I'm looking at you, 2/2 Wall token.

I choose a 2/2 Pink Rigger.

And now, a Rigger deck is possible.

Works well with Cryptic Gateway.

I'd love to see a similar, but more flexible card design based on this. First, let you tinker with the color/type every time you activate it, instead of just once when you bring it out. Second, let you tinker with other things about the token... maybe make any power/toughness combination that adds up to 4, for instance. And/or let you pay more to add various abilities. There's lots of fun design space here.
