unfortunately, i can't think of a profitable use for this card besides putting it into a Relentless Rats deck.

The best way to use is with Beacons. Like Beacon of Unrest (which could also return the Thrumming stone back to play in case it gets destroyed) or Beacon of Destruction. Then you should thin your library as quickly as possible. The fewer cards there left, the higher the chance the beacons will turn up.
I got a blue-black deck around that, using hand disruption and bounce to buy time, and many small cantrips and card drawers to thin the library. Since they ripple as well, this works very quickly. No tournament deck, but still fun.
Have a look at this card in conjunction with Relentless Rats (2/2), the ones which can have more than four copies in the deck. As soon as this card comes out, the next casting of a Relentless Rat basically empties the deck of all the rats and puts them into play, each one giving all the others +1/+1. With 20 of the rats in the deck, you soon have 20 X 21/21 Rats in play.
I thought I had a decent deck, until I faced this travesty.

dear relentless rat players, don't forget to include a way to prevent decking yourself

Keyword "May." If you're playing Relentless Rats, you don't have to cast them all.

Typical R.Rats gaming situation:
Rat Player (here on out RP): I play Thrumming stone!
Opponent: Oh yay.
RP: I now play Relentless Rats! And every single one of my 40 copies!
Can you activate the ripple ability by casting a spell from the graveyard with Flashback? I'd go straight for Roar of the Wurm, myself. Or maybe go with the Rats and throw in some Folk Medicines?

Yeah, i know it's probably on here a dozen times...but Relentless Rats. I don't know any better combo for it.

@Uhhsam It has a way of prevent decking, you just stop playing the spells. If you deck yourself with this, you are trying to lose. May is the ending requirement.

If ripple didn't activate of the extra copies it casts it'd be a pretty sweet mechanic. Maybe then they could print it with a ripple number other than 4. Maybe a ginormous creature with ripple 1, that'd be cool to play around with. Rippling into a chain of cards must feel pretty sweet but it suffers from an advanced case of cascade syndrome - it tends toward either side of the disappointingly weak / brokenly good scale.

OK, so this and Relentless Rats is a given.
But it goes oh so lovely with Door of Destinies, since you still cast the card.
So now, when you get 30 rats out with this, they're not 31/31s. They're 61/61s.
Tasty.

keep some blue mana to counter the inevitable day of judgment
Can go Amazing in an Eldrazi Deck. For getting spawn, at least.

Use this with Relentless Rats, and splash in red for Fervor. They can't cast that Day of Judgment if all your rats are hasty and swing the same turn they drop.

If it wasn't for this card, Cascade as a mechanic could very well have never been made. This is my favorite rare in the entire game.

WHY THE HELL IS THIS CARD SO EXPENSIVE! IS EVERY SINGLE PERSON OUT THERE MAKING RELENTLESS RATS DECKS OR WHAT!

Ripples within Ripples!!!
RIPPLECEPTION!!!
Also, with Shadowborn Apostle and Shadowborn Demon very likely coming out in M14, and there possibly even being a cycle of common "basic creatures" + "summonable mythics" (and let's not forget the apostles summon ALL demons!)...
... this card could become very sick indeed!!!

@Snaxme - Thats why you run Mortal Combat as a backup!
I had a lot of fun with this and Surging Sentinals. At first it didn't work as well as I'd hoped, so I added 4 Endless Horizons. Thins out the library and basically guarantees the ridiculous ripple 8 to turn up at least 2 more. Plus, if you can ripple the horizons, your opponents cant manna screw you by destroying it.
Sure rats are good, but I have this in my goblin tribal. Use goblin recruiter to get every thing and then play this. goblins got faster if that's even possible

The ONE rare I'm missing in the set, and yet I wound up with TWO foiled (and 2 non) Dark Depths. FML.

Thrumming Stone + Burn Deck = Lets gamble and see if this Lightning bolt does 3, 6, 9, or 12 damage.

Combine it with Divining Top
Best part is; the worst thing you have is a naya colored cascade deck with acceleration and free mana fixing; which isn't so bad :)
FML.
